  • This is FEELING.

  • This is some of the best drum sound out there... He's in such control! And its only with two mics! (stereo overhead and bass drum). Amazing music.

  • Bill Stewart is so good the hi-hat tried to run away...

  • So tasty, I'm full.

  • the cameraman really hates guitarists...

  • Man, Stewart really has the fullest sound out there...

  • Always an amazing drummer to watch. How he deals with the walking high hat and never misses a beat is unreal. Wondering high hats and kick drums are exactly why I use an area rug under my kit. Problem solved.

  • His hihat is really alive ... Wonder how he manages to pull it back ...? (at 0:15)

  • Holy Shit! I jumped at 2:25. There are so many amazing moments with Bill's drumming.

  • i wonder why he tunes his toms like that...sounds bad to me

  • @death4devil not to me... i like it

  • I almost doubted their existence. Jazzdrummers who play with matched grip.

  • His shirt matches his drum set

  • The high hat is alive!

  • I had no idea that Greg Kinnear played the drums

  • Oh man that ride is tasty... what type is it?

  • @ParallaxDrums I know for a fact that the darker ride is a vintage Zildjian K that he has had he has had since his days in Des Moines, IA. As for the other, it's a K Constantinople (don't know which model), but he is known for taking new cymbals and hammer on them with a ball peen hammer until he get's them the way he likes them. His cymbal sounds are so great and so identifiable as his.

  • amazing dynamics

  • Nice Bill! woohhooooooo. I like the way you play with your hi-hat. Hahahahahahaha.

  • Larry is a beeeeaaasssttt!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Simply beautiful; looks easy, yet refrain from trying this at home, you'll want to sell your kit...

  • Note to Bill Stewart: Easiest 100 bucks you ever made: Sell me the DVD.

  • @marketingheadhunter its from the 1998 mordern drummer festival DVD! now u can give me that hundred bucks! :P

  • where can I get that DVD or whatnot !

  • this mf is G00D!

  • man, I miss playing drums...sold my kit when we built the nursery...doh!

  • when i grow up i want to play just like bill stewart

  • incredible drummer!! what an amazing playing... absolute artist... all the band has an incredible interplay..

  • que músico!! uno de los mejores!

  • fantastic

  • This guy is the master of rythm and making sounds out of his kit. Incredible, and what a feel and phrasing!

  • I'm very lucky that Bill likes guys, because the person that plays like that in front of me, if he or she so chooses, will have the privilege of degrading my body in whatever ways he or she chooses. I will be at that person's sexual mercy.

  • One of my favorite drummers for sure....

Hilarious about the hi-hats though. I agree with SAHBfan. Lol. I thought the exact same thing when I first saw this.

  • Great Groove!

  • Does this guy chew his cymbals?:-o

Really great player - but not sure how you get to that level of playing without learning the importance of a square of carpet ;-)

  • this dude is incredible

  • He's great. Funny that his high hat keeps moving away !

  • grande groove!!!!!

  • great

  • realy nice.

Can someone tell me what kind of drum is it ? and cymbals if u can.. thx

  • Looks like a big mix. Def. a supraphonic brass snare. Gretch bass drum. Toms are a mystery. Cymbals are some type of zildjians

  • toms are round badge gretch if im not mistaken. also, that primary ride with the chunk out of it and the hi hats are old k's from the 60s. the other two cymbals are the original k custom dry complex rides.

  • Toms are modern Gretsch Renown series . Badges a dead giveaway .

  • Tom are modern Gretsch Renown .

  • im not sure when this was recorded but he currently uses gretsch drums with zildjian cymbals. he's recently developed the complex dry rides in the k custom line and probably uses three in his setup (i think)

  • @fabiozamagni Drums are Gretsch "Stop Sign" Badge i think from 1979-1981 or something? And a hammered Ludwig Black Beauty snare. Nowadays he uses 24' Dry Complex II ride and other Dry Complex II cymbals, thin constantinople hihats...not toatlly sure about cymbals in this older video.

  • thx alot..

  • Zildjian K Customs he plays.

  • Nice playing....Very creative............

  • that hi-hat thing i do that too ha haha

  • Most tasteful drummer in jaz today.

  • the hi hat escape plan!!! "no, no, no, you stay here, dude" sorry :(

     haha,

one of my favourites drummer in jazz!!!

  • Funky as you like.Love the sound this guy gets out of the drums.

  • 4:30 on the ride, what a beautiful clicking tone!

  • Bill Stewart is so great... awesome sound and he is just amazing (the music is great too)

  • So fluid...his phrasing is so organic. It's seamless.

  • i dont think its a complex. this was in 97. Zildjian k released the complex in early 2000's. but there is a possibility its a early prototype.

  • Stevie Wonder s cover song. "talkin Book Album 1972" .

  • man that hi hat didnt even phase him. i would given a big bernard purdie "wOooooah!!"

  • haha, i love it when his hi hat runs away from him in the beginning and he just pulls it back.

  • "Ca sent l'école tout ca" comme dirait Aldo Romano

  • so totally bloomin funky!

    Thanks for posting.

  • is that a complex ride?

how would that sound as a crash? that sounds trashy *.*

  • He's awesome. He really needs to secure his hi hat stand though!

  • NICE SOLO AND PERFORMANCE!!!! ENJOY

  • Bill Stewart sounds awesome!!!

  • Was this ever released on DVD? I have the VHS, but the upgrade would be nice! Awesome concert.

  • Bill Stewart's great. Great sound, great groove, great ideas. He plays MUSIC, not a bunch of licks.

  • bill is like a smashing pumpkin off the crash cymbals

  • Comment removed

  • Bill is THE best. Perfect time, the deepest groove ever, fantastic sound, always musical. Out of this world...

  • bill stewart kicks so much ass! he did a bunch of stuff with john scofield that is way coo. "en route" is the album, some of stewarts best playing in my very humble opinion.

  • homeboy drummer got it going on! I mean for real. You go, drummer... Give the drummer some!

  • i fucking HATE it when my hi hat slides away from me, but im not bill stewart..... it doesnt even look like it matters to him.

  • increible que buen Swing!!!

  • if i could play like stewart, i wouldn't do anything else. ever.

  • yeah i second that. whoever posted that, oh prodigy24 is your name, you def know what you're talking about. I'm sure you play 3/4/#4/5 licks and all that good stuff. i also bet you're a nsaty drummer and keys player. keep it up man (whore lingo)

  • what is a "3/4#4/5 lick?"

  • basically, if you trill from the #4 (which is also called the "blue note" or the flat 5) up to the 5, it gives it that bluesy feel.

  • If you didn't do anything else, you could play like Stewart.

  • well, i dig the dudes style i really do (and his signature sticks kick ass), but there are a lot better players out there, don't you think?

  • when you use the word better you open up the discussion to a lot of different possiblities; the word is too vague you know? I personally think there are VERY FEW drummers who compare to stewart, he is so tasteful, so musical. He can groove so hard in the most traditional settings. So many nuances and subtleties and complexities to his playing; this dude is always paintin' pictchaz.

  • what word are you refering to? the word better?

  • yeah, the word better

  • well better is an opinion thing i understand, that's why I said, "don't you guys think." Anyways, i dig the dudes style, just think there are a lot of other stuff out there that is more stimulating.

  • He can fucking kick it though.

  • That's hilarious!

  • THE NO-RUG HIHAT

In some cog. psych. studies investigating motor-skills and judging distance, subjects who practice the task (whatever the task might be) at different distances, or with different kinds of interference, subjects actually perform better when attempting the regular task (shooting free-throws etc).

SO, perhaps he gets better action on the HH when he is forced to constantly 'grab' at it with his left foot.

Alternatively, maybe he gets better action w/ the 'grabbing' technique?

  • Great playing, the hi-hat was hilarious.

  • Saw him with Kevin Hays Trio at Small's in NYC

    8/13/08 (making a live recording)

Not many drummers impress me these days, but this guy is AMAZING!! No BS, no attitude, just real deep musicianship and creativity. His feel and touch alone are examples of his mastery. The overall sound was beautiful, and you knew it was Bill Stewart- not a Tony or Elvin clone, etc. The real deal.

  • Bill The Groooove Stewart

  • bill is ridiculously amazing...i can't imagine ever coming close to his level of talent. bill is the man!

  • Agree 100% - there are two drumming genres that are SO hard to master - jazz and funk. Bill has a mastery of both, and they feed into each other in his playing. I'm so glad he exists, 'cause (like someone once said of Roy Haynes), I only have to think about his playing and I will automatically start to play better...

  • great stuff

  • Beautifull :D THanks!

  • probably using his foot to grab one of the legs and pull it back

  • How in the hell does he pull his hi- hat stand back with his leg??

  • is there anything he can't do?!

  • whats the deal with bill stewart supposedly being gay? How would anyone have knowledge except first hand about something like that. anbody?

  • Man, who cares???

  • If a genie gave me more than one wish, one of my wishes would be to be able to play like this. I'm not sure what the other wish would be at the moment.

  • i love that snare!!! deos anyone know what he's using

  • It's a 14x7 Ludwig hand-hammered bronze with tube lugs. I loved it so much I bought one. Unfortunately I can't get it to sound that good. It's all in Bill's touch. Amazing!

  • Thanks!!

  • He makes it look so easy. I love his high hat technique. Its funny to watch it move away, and then him drag it back over.

  • That's funny... to me he looks like he's really working... not like when you watch someone like DeJohnette, who seems to have this fluidity... which makes what he does even more remarkable.

  • Even the great Bill Stewart can forget to bring his rug to the gig. ;)

  • He probably NEVER uses a rug, because in EVERY video i watched the hh stand slides away from him and he pulls it back with his leg.i saw him in person too, same thing...i dont why he does that!:))))

  • The most musical drummer i've ever heard...
