JD1985, when it comes to being a history nut as opposed to a great many other hobbies, what's worse? A $600 musket that I'll fire all year long and will NEVER wear out, or putting $1800 rims on an $800 car? Or $2200 for a main 'chute in skydiving? Or scuba diving, being a Shriner, a motorcycle guy, a computer geek? We all have our hobby.
Adding to what Robilar said, I take pride in my country. I also believe that history repeats itself. So, with learning visually, and getting a feel for it, there is a lesser chance of it repeating. I love history, and re-living it just makes it so much better. Of course, I believe the Civil War was a bad act, but learning about the past, and re-living it by re-enactments help you to better understand what is going on. Any other questions, let me know.
We don't have the real battlefields or huge amounts of combatants, but we do have a lot of events. There are a lot of transplanted Southerners here, and a lot of us had ancestors that fought and died. I know a few guys in the SCV, and we go to gravesites of Confederate soldiers on Conf Mem Day. Besides, this is a great deal of fun.
Can i ask a question, why do many Americans re-inact their Civil War?, We had a Civil War in England from 1642-1649 between Parlimenterians led by Oliver Cromwell and Royalists led by Charles I. just like the American Civil war the sides had nick names (Royalists were "Caviliers" and Parlimenterians were "Roundheads"). but we dont re-inact our Civil War, why do you re-inact yours?.
The Only reason the Americans reeact this crap is because they believe they are a nation bred through war. But isn't every country. Suck it up. I agree americans shouldn't do this. I mean Canada beat America in my civil but apparently america doesn't want us to reenact a defeat. LOL. peace
rckroo, I'm pretty certain that you're not a historian. I'm an American, and an ACW re-enactor and Canadians did in fact kick the shit out of a bunch of American Civil War Irishmen (from both sides) who tried to assault Canada and establish a 'Free Irish State'. And they did it with militia. Search the word 'Fenians'. And if you doubt the determination of Canadians still, look up 'Vimy Ridge'.
Hey, Canadianvoice, why are you(and other folks)worried about Americans reenacting a war that took place in their history? You do your thing, and they'll do theirs. Does it personally bother you or something? Do you not have a life?
we re-enact our civil war because unlike yours, ours didnt happen THAT long ago, and unlike yours ours had a just cause, england has fought many wars and nobody cares, but the usa is a superpower, and we decide the fate of the world, your just a bunch of hatefil europeans looking down your nose at the true heros
The English Civil war was (from what I've learned) had much to do with power struggles between the King and Parliament. The American Civil War involved the entire nation, brothers fighting brothers and two ideologies clashing. There is a lot of romance and Americana there, not to downplay the horror of war. Plus the battles are cool as hell to watch.
j95lee, the ECW was VERY much about the shape of the world as it was then. Had the Royalists won, our country would have looked VERY different. Before you comment on the wars of someone else, do your reading.
I don't where that came from. I commented on why I feel Americans reenact their civil war and the English doesn't. ACW engulfed the nation as a whole and the battles involves romance and myth making. .
Please, don't lecture me. I'm Asian, I read in 2 lagnuages, and I'm actually aware of history outside of North America.
Sorry if I came across too high-handed. I didn't intend to, but sometimes it's hard to make a point in 500 characters ;)
More to the point of the conversation, there are several ECW re-enactment societies active in Great Britain, though the one I'm most familiar with is the Sealed Knot. They have a couple of vids posted here on youtube. What I'm not sure I understand is why Europeans re-enact the US Civil War... seems odd to me.But you do have me looking up Korean military history. kudos!
j95lee, do you have some resentment for U.S. Civil War Re-enactors? I could be wrong, but from this comment-"I don't where that came from. I commented on why I feel Americans reenact their civil war and the English doesn't...I'm actually aware of history outside of North America."
I know certain Asian culture celebrate parts of their history re imagining it on the modern stage. But it tends to be ceremonial and not a literal "reenactment" of the actual events.
I know for a fact that some Koreans are ENAMORED their military glory. The Imjim Waeran is stuff of fable. Why don't they reenact this annually?
I don't know. There's probably room for debate. Not for elitists like Robilar, apparently.
Great shoots. that was one fun event.

DO you feel that you get more in touch with your ancestors by reenacting their deaths? Visit a memorial or read a book instead. Hobbyist galore.
