  • @CEO1451 obviously you are convinced of this treatment. Me, not so much. Call it philosophical differences but just because things are new, cutting edge, FDA approved, painless, etc. does not mean it works. FDA also approved a lot of drugs like VIOXX without knowing that it increases heart attacks and strokes. So go ahead and charge patients 2-3K per quad when I can get the same results with a $200 fee.

  • @CEO1451 FDA approval means it is safe to use and has therapeutic benefits. It being superior to conventional therapy has not been proven. The fact that 500 periodontist are using it has no bearing in the game. I could say that the same 500 periodontist smoke but that doesn't mean smoking is good for them.

Please list the studies that say LANAP is superior to conventional therapy. "Consistent results" mean nothing until they go under the scrutiny of a randomized controlled trial.

  • @CEO1451 Personally I don't like using my patients as guinea pigs. I'd rather wait until it is more proven by research. 2nd, there was a similar procedure by the same guys who came up with LANAP (Yukna) called ENAP. Same concept, except ENAP used a scapel. Yukna is also a periodontist and you don't see ENAP used anymore. There maybe use for lasers in periodontics and may be proven without a doubt that it can replace conventional osseous. But as of now, it is WAY LACKING is research.

  • @CEO1451 And there is a good reason why. AAP likes to be evidence base and not guns blazing with new technology. If YOU recall, the failure rate of implants in the 80s early 90s were horrendous. Not until more research and better surfaced implants were invented did the AAP come around. If you choose to use LANAP just because it new and you can charge large amounts of money then thats you're business.

  • @titaniumgums The results have also been evidenced to be different from and superior to scaling and root planing. IJPRD Dec 2007/Yukna. Further, your span of fees between LANAP and SRP is exceedingly broad. It is entirely a surgical procedure and is only described as in league with SRP by those who have little understanding of the procedure/protocol and all that it involved. Osseous surgery does not produce a "far better result." I am a periodontist as well. You are lacking information.

  • @slycenh thats the problem. That is all of the research, one paper (Yukna). And if you read the article, they only use single rooted teeth, what about multirooted teeth? far more complicated to treat. You then must know the AAPs position if you're a periodontist. If there is statistically significant evidence that LANAP induces new bone formation, a less painful procedure than surgery, then there should be overwhelming support. But alas there is not.

  • @slycenh Me "lacking information?" That is exactly what my rebuttal to you, LANAP is lacking information. Just like the previous philosophy of Yukna (ENAP). I suppose I shouldn't have initiated this because I've had similar conversations with believers and its like talking to a brick wall.

To patients, be cautious about this procedure. Ask a lot of question from a lot of specialists before you choose the correct treatment. Good bye.

  • @titaniumgums Results are far from "sketchy." Radiographic and CT evidence of new bone formation is manifold as evidenced by multiple user submissions of imagery after healing from therapy. LANAP is also not "painless." It is far more comfortable than traditional therapy, but entirely painless dentistry is also entirely mythical. This is well known by those of us who have practiced for any length of time.

  • Here, they are comparing LANAP with osseous surgery, and as a practicing periodontist, osseous produces a far better result. Be careful what general dentists say (they are great at evaluating mild forms of gum disease but for advanced cases go to a specialist to it evaluated.

  • Just to make clear for youtubers watching. This procedure is not accepted by the American Academy of Periodontology. Results are sketchy as best. Yes its "painless" yes it takes less time, but i can only think of a few studies that produces positive results. And these results are comparable to a 200 dollar procedure (deep cleaning) rather than a 2500 dollar laser procedure.

  • It is not a diode laser. The Periolase MVP-7 is an Nd:YAG laser. They are extremely different wavelengths with entirely different treatment potentials.

  • Is that a Diode laser ?

  • A laser based therapy centered on a FDA approved protocol has always engendered excitement on the part of the American public. Avoiding old style sutures, bone removal, pain, and "long teeth" is the dream of any patient undergoing treatment for periodontitis. LANAP is a 21st century protocol for the treatment of periodontitis. It is a firestorm revolutionizing periodontal care.
