Now here's something really freaky - I was looking out my window and heard "Ba", but when I look at his FOREHEAD, not paying attention to his lips, I still hear a change!
I did several variations where I closed my eyes on some utterances, opened on others; then repeated, but closed on other utterances - always focused on the FOREHEAD, not the LIPS!
I am using blindsight - the brain is getting the information, even though it's not represented in the "picture".
this is simply an effect that EVERYONE'S brain plays on them. You are in no way proving a counterargument by stating "uhm no". You are just simply not effected...or underdeveloped.
It's neat because if you look at him saying gaga/dada you'll notice that he's only using his tongue to say them. try saying baba without touching the two lips of your mouth. that is why your brain is interpreting him by seeing the way he pronounces the words
lol when i open my eyes he says 'dada' and when i close my eyes he says 'baba'. I think its because it doesnt look like he says baba, but it sounds like. cool :)
OK first this is neuroscience. Ur supposed to just watch and listen to the video, then close your eyes and listen again. Then mute an only watch a final time. when all said and done you would believe he said three different things. when really he says the same thing!!!! pretty cool.... BITCHES
@Psychology8Valerie Nice technical linguistic comment, but he doesn't say da-da, like it says in the description, he says ba-ba, and I hear a kind of "d"/"g" sound... both of which are "voiced"
awesome! it really works! impressive!
Ahhh this is awesome, what really amazes me is the fact that it's still effective even AFTER reading the explanation, and thus being aware of the whole thing!
We don't really "hear" sound. Our brain generates the illusion of "sounds" based on sensory information from ALL sources (eyes and ears and even touch). Your brain generates other people's speech in your own head based on electrical signals from your ears and eyes.
Because our brains use inputs from eyes and ears in order to generate "sounds" in our internal experience, we can "hear" different "sounds" when we close our eyes. Some people use their eyes to read lips more than others.
I understand the concept. We hear gaga or dada when we look at the video because we associate the the movement of the mouth with what would make sense of what your actually hearing(Because to make the sound baba you'd have to close your mouth to make the B sound). But if you close your eyes you can't use your vision to help you so you can kinda hear baba.
@Zttbm yes it's bullshit. Psychologist think they can tell what someone feels or thinks based on the notion they read it in a book. Con Artist ,Sales People and Magicians are better at psychology since they have to scam , read people in real life. Also lets say this effect does affect most people. So what. That like being fascinated most people blink when pass your hand in front of their face. who cares.
he's just pronouncing a letter in arabic language, it is a mixture between the letter t,d and a harsh t .. for english speakers it sounds like an illusion
@CrazzyCowcat actually his lips are saying "gaga", the sound is saying "baba" but when your brain processes both visual and audio signals, you here "dada" because its about the middle between the two
it is our site that is messing with us right? it LOOKS like he is saying "gaga" so our eyes will bend it so that is wat we hear. but when we close our eyes, we hear the real thing? hm lol idk
@premachu3: No, I'm serious (kind of). I didn't mean to offend you, it was a joke, but look: the whole thing is in (not) watching his lips move. He's saying something between 'dada' and 'gaga' and the illusion is hearing 'baba' instead of dada/gaga, not vice-versa. That would mean that only those who hear dada/gaga even when not looking have superior minds. I'm quite satisfied with my mediocre mind though. :)
I believe this is a linguistic effect, having to do with whether the sounds you hear are aspirated or not. I seem to recall studying this in phonetics class - wish I remembered the details.
Hey redwingkiller, if you didn't make it, then who did? Because this is a fairly high quality version and I need it so I can recommand it too the museum where I'm doing an internship.
