  • Wow. o.O Heard 'gaga', and then 'baba' after I closed my eyes.

  • Now here's something really freaky - I was looking out my window and heard "Ba", but when I look at his FOREHEAD, not paying attention to his lips, I still hear a change!

I did several variations where I closed my eyes on some utterances, opened on others; then repeated, but closed on other utterances - always focused on the FOREHEAD, not the LIPS!

I am using blindsight - the brain is getting the information, even though it's not represented in the "picture".

    This is SO cool!

  • Yup, heard baba first time sorry.

  • I heard baba the FIRST time :S

  • cool.. :D

  • Uhm, no, I heard ba ba the first time...

  • @SkullPunt

this is simply an effect that EVERYONE'S brain plays on them. You are in no way proving a counterargument by stating "uhm no". You are just simply not effected...or underdeveloped.

  • @SkullPunt Thats cos you fail

  • @SkullPunt me too..

  • I instantly understood "Bah Bah"

  • Are you a wizard?

  • God this is creepy..

  • It's neat because if you look at him saying gaga/dada you'll notice that he's only using his tongue to say them. try saying baba without touching the two lips of your mouth. that is why your brain is interpreting him by seeing the way he pronounces the words

  • gaga ooh la la want yo bad romance

  • lol when i open my eyes he says 'dada' and when i close my eyes he says 'baba'. I think its because it doesnt look like he says baba, but it sounds like. cool :)

  • ba da ba da ba da

  • Obviously a huge fan of Lady Baba.

  • its mikey from orange county choppers

  • FAIL

  • i didn't hear any difference lol

  • Mindfuck!

  • Baba baba baba at different intonations.

  • I didn't hear any difference

  • Open And Close your eyes LOL

  • it doesnt even work for me

  • i heard gaga the first time, baba the second time.

  • gaga u la la ...

  • ba-ba ba-ba ba-ba, bob bob bob bob bob bob, gaga gaga gaga, dada dada dada.

  • OK first this is neuroscience. Ur supposed to just watch and listen to the video, then close your eyes and listen again. Then mute an only watch a final time. when all said and done you would believe he said three different things. when really he says the same thing!!!! pretty cool.... BITCHES

  • Lady "gaga-gaga-gaga-gaga"

  • Lasy "gaga-gaga-gaga-gaga"

  • i heard la la la la

  • I hear gallaga gallga ga ga

  • He Looks Like Edge.

  • I heard ba ba ba ba va-ba

  • you look like a pedofile or rapist.

  • He's saying "da-da-da", but it is heard as "ta-ta-ta". The consonant /d/ is voiced, but /t/ is voiceless.

  • @Psychology8Valerie no, he is saying "baba" but his lips are saying "gaga" so we hear it as "dada"

  • @Psychology8Valerie Nice technical linguistic comment, but he doesn't say da-da, like it says in the description, he says ba-ba, and I hear a kind of "d"/"g" sound... both of which are "voiced"

  • ga ga blah blah

  • The people who don't get the point of this illusion should probably go see a doctor for signs of mental retardation.

  • awesome! it really works! impressive!

    Fun!

  • fair enough

  • Dude dont tell people to click the ad ull lose your partnership

  • When i look at the video it sounds like hes saying "ga ga ga ga ga ga"

when you look away or cover his mouth it sounds like hes saying "da da da da da da"

  • i heard "aah aah, aah aah, aah aah" the first time, and "aah aah, aah aah, aah aah" the second time.

  • if you understand Chinese, that's another story. open_da da close_ba ba, which is "father" in Chinese

  • I dont hear any beginning sound lol.

  • awesome

  • I hear (Lady?!) Gaga...

    : '(

  • When I closed my eyes, I heard "Star Bucks". They're using subliminal messaging!

  • Ahhh this is awesome, what really amazes me is the fact that it's still effective even AFTER reading the explanation, and thus being aware of the whole thing!

  • i was watching home movies and then this came up

  • Ga Ga

  • Ba ba, ba ba, ba ba.

  • this probably the greatest cover of ke$ha's "blah blah"

  • @254fds haha nice one lol

  • ahah ahah ahah

  • i heared it as ba ba both closed and opened eyes

  • Comment removed

  • that is the shit

  • I clicked on the ad because you're awesome. :D

  • We don't really "hear" sound. Our brain generates the illusion of "sounds" based on sensory information from ALL sources (eyes and ears and even touch). Your brain generates other people's speech in your own head based on electrical signals from your ears and eyes.

Because our brains use inputs from eyes and ears in order to generate "sounds" in our internal experience, we can "hear" different "sounds" when we close our eyes. Some people use their eyes to read lips more than others.

  • It sounded like baba with my eyes open. Best illusion ever...

  • When I closed my eyes I heard a sweet voice from my consciousness that tell me: WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?

    XD

  • What will happen if I start to blink rapidly?

  • I guess this explains Obama

  • I understand the concept. We hear gaga or dada when we look at the video because we associate the the movement of the mouth with what would make sense of what your actually hearing(Because to make the sound baba you'd have to close your mouth to make the B sound). But if you close your eyes you can't use your vision to help you so you can kinda hear baba.

  • yeah it sounded like baba regardless of eyes with me :S lol

  • gagagagagagaga

  • I guess this explains Tea Baggers.

  • it always souds baba to me

  • cool.

  • it sounds like BA BA BA evry time i play it

  • Its simply called audio dubbing.. He says "dah" and then dubs over top with "bah". Easy as that!

  • lol the ad took forever to load and i heard the whole video before i saw it

  • yeah it still sounds like ba ba ba ba. even with my eyes open.

  • He should articulate it clearly, otherwise this makes no sense.

  • @bugger316 close your eyes and listen to it again.

  • pa-pa, pa-pa, pa-ba

  • all i heard was baba

  • I find this very interesting. And it's not really psychology anyway - it's neuroscience.

  • I saw this on BBC Horizon and i still dont hear a differnce. Psychology is such bullshit

  • @CardinalRaker Psychology is bullshit? hahahahahaha. Studying the way the brain works and processes is bullshit? Sure thing.

  • @Zttbm yes it's bullshit. Psychologist think they can tell what someone feels or thinks based on the notion they read it in a book. Con Artist ,Sales People and Magicians are better at psychology since they have to scam , read people in real life. Also lets say this effect does affect most people. So what. That like being fascinated most people blink when pass your hand in front of their face. who cares.

  • @CardinalRaker Have you ever heard of a case study? And who do you think wrote these books they apperantly get all their knowledge from?

  • @Zttbm psychology is bullshit. They pretend that psychology is in the same league as biology, physics, chemistry, engineering. It's not.

  • saw this at nylffffffffff! :)

  • its a lip reading thing

  • he's just pronouncing a letter in arabic language, it is a mixture between the letter t,d and a harsh t .. for english speakers it sounds like an illusion

  • HEY! THAT ISNT COACH MCGUIRK

  • It works also when you only cover the mouth

  • @ege92 dude i never knew that and now i do haha thanks b

  • FREAKY.

  • sounds like lad lam, lad lam

  • all i hear is BA... are they showing simpletons this video?

  • @poobed666 I thought almost the same thing lmao!

  • ohhh i get it, when you close your eyes he says ba ba ba, and when you watch it he says da da da, but hes really saying ga ga ga this is so weird

  • MINDFUCK

  • I only hear baba. With both my eyes open and closed. How is this supposed to work?

  • He is saying Dada on the movie but the sound we get to hear is Baba.

  • @CrazzyCowcat actually his lips are saying "gaga", the sound is saying "baba" but when your brain processes both visual and audio signals, you here "dada" because its about the middle between the two

  • This is a simulation. Nothing is real. We are nothing more than video game characters.

  • all i heard was ba ba the whole time so how come it dosent work for me???is there something wrong with my ears???

  • @lollystrawberry98 in order to hear dada, you have to look at ONLY his lips

  • @blitznags I only looked at his lips and it didnt work(no offense!)

  • @lollystrawberry98 than you're not normal lol :P, idk what else to tell u

  • Totally worked for me. I watched the other Mcgurk effect and didnt work at all.

  • doesnt work

  • I actually hear the vowel before the consonant. What I hear is uap uap uap uap uap uap. With eyes open or closed.

  • it is our site that is messing with us right? it LOOKS like he is saying "gaga" so our eyes will bend it so that is wat we hear. but when we close our eyes, we hear the real thing? hm lol idk

  • It didn't work. I thought it was BABA both times...

  • First, look away from your computer. You'll hear "ba ba, ba ba, ba ba." Then, look at his mouth, you'll hear "ga ga, ga ga, ga ga."

  • @utubegirl98 i still heaar baba

  • All I heard was blah blah, blah blah, blah blah

  • @Islandbratha hahahahaahahaahah xD

  • I heard baba both times..

  • Just so you guys know, it wouldn't work if you hadn't have read what he wrong in the description.

It's because you think you're going to hear it differently when you close your eyes that it appears that it does.

  • It`s still baba.

  • ew... it didnt trick me.

  • @nsjohnny It didn't trick you?

Hope you can say G properly.

  • i heard BA BA then when i look it is GA GA

  • well watching sounded like baba ....

  • funny, i wasn't reached by it's ilusion, maybe just work with english native speakers ? :)

  • Comment removed

  • it's BA BA BA BA all the time... this sucks

  • I always hear baraba, baraba, baraba.

  • I always hear baba-baba-baba, whether I'm watching him or not.

  • @bettyafeia hahahhahahahahahah

  • din baba

  • Man all I heard both times was "baba baba baba"... nothing else.

  • i got baba both ways

  • baba both times

  • baba all the way...

  • It didn't work for me :D

  • I confess that even watching it sounds like "baba".

  • umm is this a joke? all i hear is baba....waste of time like 95% of the videos on youtube

  • @TheKeisari: I like potatoes.

  • ....i was baba from the start for me...looks like the trick had no effeect on my superior mind

  • @premachu3 same here,muwahaha evil geniouses =P

  • @premachu3: Actually, most likely your vision is poor.

  • @inkubusse anybody with poor vision would be able to see a video directly infront of them.

If they couldnt they are likely to be blind, and as crazy this sounds...as im typing this from a keyboard, im not blind.

So actually, i have a superior mind.

  • @premachu3: No, I'm serious (kind of). I didn't mean to offend you, it was a joke, but look: the whole thing is in (not) watching his lips move. He's saying something between 'dada' and 'gaga' and the illusion is hearing 'baba' instead of dada/gaga, not vice-versa. That would mean that only those who hear dada/gaga even when not looking have superior minds. I'm quite satisfied with my mediocre mind though. :)

  • @premachu3: Hmmmm, in fact I'm not sure what he's saying, but his lips (the visual part) most definitely say 'gaga'.

  • records himself saying gaga, but inserts audio of him saying baba.

  • how does he say baba without even closing his mouth???

    o.o

  • I believe this is a linguistic effect, having to do with whether the sounds you hear are aspirated or not. I seem to recall studying this in phonetics class - wish I remembered the details.

  • I Hear Baba,,,

but His Mouth Looks Like Hes Saying gaga..

    This Means Im Retarded?

  • This Means Your A Fucken Zweistein.

  • ??

    kakap.. kakap.. kakap..??

  • I when I closed my eyes I heard "they are all out to get you"

  • @v1d30junk love you:')

  • @v1d30junk hahahaha

  • if u keep on blinking its kool

  • Hey redwingkiller, if you didn't make it, then who did? Because this is a fairly high quality version and I need it so I can recommand it too the museum where I'm doing an internship. I need a version without the annotation. Could yo uotherwise, perhaps, send me a download link? I'd be much obliged. :)

  • @Suikerverslaafde i would be happy to let you use my video. ill download it it to my computer and then send that to you. is that cool?

  • :D Wow! Well, the deadline for the report was yesterday, but I think I can still send it to my supervisor and tell her what it's for...

I'd be very happy if you could do that! :D

Could you send me a PM about it later? Thanks in advance! :D

  • la la?

  • Closed: Baba baba baba

    Open: Baba baba baba

Okay? I know what I heard. xD

  • and when i close my eyes I hear BA BA. scary...

  • I hear DA DA

  • It's all very simple my friends. It's another audio. In the original video, he kept saying "gaga". You can notice it by the movement of his mouth. Then, he changed the audio to him saying "Baba". It's like he dubbed over it. He looks like he's saying "Gaga" but he's saying "Baba". This is because you can't say Baba without sticking your lips together.

  • all I can hear is baba

  • WOW! This video shows us how much our mind uses what we see to distinguish what we hear!

  • Could the sound you hear also depend on your natural language? Maybe more naturally english speakers hear "da" while others may hear "ga" or even "ba"

  • Comment removed

  • i heard li li li!!

  • fuck yeah i just wasted 7 sec of my life..:S

  • I heard something like.. ho ho ho?

  • He just put different sound over the video.

  • I hear gaga and baba

  • wow when u see his mouth it looks like hes making a G sound not a B sound so it sounds like hes saying gaga with ur eyes open. freaky

  • i heard baba and somee bæbæ

  • fuck urself

  • lol first time and all i heard is baba lol

  • I must be dumb. I only hear "baba" each time.

  • It is distinctly different for me. Weird!

  • you can also prime it, by think the sound you want to hear

  • amazing, im actually blown away by this. I can't beleive visual cues can affect auditory processing to such a obvious degree!

  • @ayetoday When you play a Youtube vid on 1080p the sounds standardly gets better, but the visual makes it awesome ;)
