I am a Northerner and I am nutzo about bass...always have been. Love to river fish for Smallies and lake fish for Largemouth. But I love to Walleye fish! I eat all my Walleye and worship all my bass lol...to me Bass are like cows for the Hindus. I think the reason Bass are more popular in the USA is they are easier to catch without a boat (ie farm ponds small lakes).
You are correct, Walleye are much more active at night. Their glassy eyes are used to reflect light which allows them to see better in conditions with very little light. The feeding times for Walleye are usually at night, because they have such a great vision advantage over their prey.
During the day i've usually found them in very deep areas or shallow areas with good shelter.
Yep, i think night whipping is the best way to fish for walleye. You may not get the monsters you get in the big lakes during the day, but you can hit some nice ones. I got a 9 pounder last year and hit a double header (one on each plug at the same time) just last week. When they hit at night, they hit hard!
Really impressive Jim. I've been told not to stock Walleye in my 4 acre pond in Mississippi but I stocked 100 fingerling a year ago. I haven't seen any dead yet. There's Bass and Blue Gill and Catfish in there. Do you think the EYES will survive and grow? The stay in the shade area I noticed.
I am not a Biologist, but walleye are usually found in larger lakes , they are not really a pond fish. High water temperatures and oxygen levels might be a problem as well. I hope they do well in your pond.
Perhaps I may be of assistance, my Grandfather has a backyard pond that he stocked (and I brought him a few wild) Largemouth, Channel Cats, Farm Cats, and Hybrid Bluegill and he's been a subscriber of various pond magazines for years. I've checked them out, (usually as good bathroom reads) and from what i've heard Walleye can do well in ponds if given the right conditions. I'd recommend some rocky shelter areas, i've read large slabs of concrete can work well.
(The previous comment was meant as a reply to Queenambi and so is this)
I'd also recommend considering stocking your pond with Fathead Minnows, they make great food for Walleye and other predators alike. Not the brightest of fish, basically swimming food, but hey, who doesn't like an easy meal?
Also, as Jimkinner suggested, they do require a good amount of oxygen, i'd recommend aerating with a fountain or other device.
Hope that helped! They'll give a great fight and make a great meal!
Great video!!! Didn't realize that Walleye & muskie hang out that close. Thought for sure Musk would have Wally for lunch. They must be finding plenty of food rolling on the bottom.
Cool video man. I've been looking for walleye and pike documentaries and have never found them. Interesting to see how they are in the water, together in groups. Kinda makes you understand that to catch walleye, you really must bug them at the bottom with your lure because they seem to have a chill attitude. I see that there is one pike in your video. Imagin catching them in action, that would be awsome!
Walleye are very social, it seems. It is common to see them in groups, or actually hanging out with other fish. They often school with smallmouth bass. The Muskie and the Walleye in the video hung together for years. I had always assumed the two species had a predator/prey relationship. I have a lot to learn.
Since we've hit the water this season, I've been actively trying to get some carp footage. The carp are very wary and I have been unable to gain their trust. I'm getting some clips, but not the range or quality I would like.
awesome Much more clear than the filthy agri-rivers in so mn.

I agree. I don't understand why Americans are so bent on bass fishing... has to be the lamest game fish there is.
warcraftsucks123 2 years ago
Trust me, it's not all Americans. Mainly it is the south. They love their Nascar and bass fishing down there.

That was really neat! Was that during a cold front? Those seemed like really lazy walleye.

Walleye seem very mellow. I think they are more active at night.

All my river footage has been from the St. Lawrence and Niagara Rivers to date. The water clarity is often good.

Thank you, the fish in this video are in 12- 25 feet of water. The fish in "the Walleye Wreck" video are in 65-100' of water.

You should try In the Ottonabee river in Peterboorugh Ontario, film by the Zoo. People feed carp there. There is usally 30-40 of them there.
