@spence141 I do research on every vehicles I consider. And truth is, In most cases Toyotas or Hondas last longer. BUt this ia all a matter of opinion. Case closed.
@scdevon 2008 bmw m3 n/a 4.0 v8 = 420 hp, 2008 lexus is-f n/a 5.0 litre v8 = 416, 2008 onward audi rs4, n/a 4.2 litre v8 = 420.. i could go on, fords late on the train, though better than dodge, they could only squeeze 425 from a 6.1 litre hemi, kinda sad if you ask me. face it europeans engineer better engines, period, but only over the past ten years.
@hamronD73 yeah, but, high horsepower puts a lot of stress on smaller displacement engines. They have to work much harder to make the power and the power comes on later. The 5.0 makes a not unsubstantial amount of horsepower, keeps the torque up and will last a long time. Europeans make great engines, but it's the combination of the engine, powertrain and suspension dynamics.
@hamronD73 umm I think you need to do a little more research. First off don't bring me factory numbers because they are NEVER accurate! TQ matters just as much if not more than HP depending on what your trying to do so don't forget that either. Also what it puts out at the flywheel is pretty much irrelevant. The RW's are what matter. Dependability is crap in MOST europeans and expensive as hell for parts to boot. 11' Mustang is damn good on the track! Be an American spend your money here!!!
@scdevon interestingly enough, most of the new 5.0's make about 460 on the dyno after being warmed up and broken in. Sounds to me like ford is taking a more conservative approach. Pretty impressive for a 5.0:)
volume metric efficiency,( hp per liter or displacement),1 assumes two motors of diff size making the same horse power, the larger one is working less. Now usually the more volume metric efficient a motor comes from the factory, usually not so much horse power is left on the table when it comes to mods....IE the S2000, My guess is this 5.0 will be no different, Forced induction will be only way, but high comp, high rev motors dont like forced induction in stock form for very long.
American IRON is the BEST! Whatta rockin' street scene coming with the new Z/28 putting out over 500hp! low 12.s for stock GT's and maybe high 11's for a STOCK Z/28! Rockin' thumpin AMERICAN street machines are for real! FUK JAP SH!T
Guys, no doubt the 5.0 makes power but, check out the new 6.2L engine in the Raptor it has 411 hp the XT version will have close too 500 hp , Roush has a stroker version of the 6.2L It's a 7.0L makes 700 hp @ 7000 r.p.m. code name "777". Runs low 9's in the 1/4 mile n/a !! Imagine a limited edition Roush Mustang 7.0 or If Ford would offer this 500hp version 6.2L engine in a Cobra, DAMM !! I would be smiling. AWSOME motors who are very close to produce 100 hp per litre.
This motor is underrated from the factory - there are several documented dyno pulls putting the power at 435 hp and 415 ft/lbs of torque - impressive.
@yorchais you can't buy just the engine yet but after the car is released they'll sell this engine to the public threw Ford performance but expect to pay 15K+ for this engine theyve tested these engines to 3000hp at the crank that's just how good they are
The Terminator put the nail in the coffin. This thing is gonna blow up and sell incredibly The Camaro may have HP, but will it sell? I certainly wouldn't trust that company, besides don't they still owe the government like 50 billion dollars in loans? Fuck that, they may not have dealers open to service the damn things!
I'd go Mustang if looking for a pony car, period. Even has Brembo's stock..and sick engine technology, this is the real deal, best GT ever, second best Mustang ever (Terminator)
@HypnoticSuggestion The 2011 are gonna be faster than the terminators to! They make 395 rwhp while the terminator made 364...i'm not taking anything away from the 03's because i love them to i'm just sayin : )
@TheSpider1200 I certainly hope the new GT is faster than my Cobra was stock. It will say a lot about where Ford is going with the mustang, and too many people have been waiting far too long for a truly fast GT.
Until MY2011, I still considered the Terminator the best Mustang ever built.
Regardless, I'm considering buying one, but that would mean selling both of my Imports.
I don't know how I would like owning two. But the GT would be more street-able, and could serve as a daily driver.
@bluesilver0000 lol alot of guys run 05-10 gts up to 7 with raised limiter....keeps you in the powerband while drag racing. and the engines can hold it
@Swidhelm i had my 94 gt 5.0 to 7600 ONE time! wouldnt you know it too, the one time i really stretch her legs, she runs off and looses oil pressure...ohwell not bad for a block thats got around 200k on it! turns out i spun every single rod bearing shes got, but she still drove me another 50sumthin miles back home tickin knockin and spittin and a sputterin all the way, thats a damn ford 5.0 block for you though! pros for bringing a legendary engine back to life!!!
Do you guys really understand what a webbed block with 4 bolt splayed mains, direct injection protected, oil squirters for the pistons and TWIN INDEPENDENT VARIABLE CAM TIMING means when it comes to the potential for this engine.. 100% VE at peak RPM and 110% at peak torque?? Show me another street driven engine that's N/A that has those features. If you ask me, this is gonna be the latest tuner favorite. Never been a big Ford fan, kinks can be worked out in time, but the design is amazing!
its actually 6-bolt main. your forgetting about the side or cross bolts, one on each side of the main caps. all Aluminum 4.6's have been 6-bolt mains since the 4V DOHC was 1st introduced in '96
I believe it's actually 6 bolt main, 4 and 2 that are bolted on each side of the block into the main cap " simular to my 03 Cobra in design but you're correct it's a whole new design all aluminum block and cylinder heads. Think of what the power would be if it was a 6.2 liter engine in a mustang. (same cubic inches as the obama motors camaro)...... Still at only 302 cubic inches it is impressive !
@kreyslerxfyre This engine is the new generation of the modular family. this is supposed to be the new "small block" version of the modular. the 6.2l that will be found in the raptor is the "big block" version of the modular engine. the ford gt engine is very simular to this 5.0l.
@kreyslerxfyre and its bone stock..so that mean that the future of the 5.0L is and will be POWERFUL, no whonder that Carol Shelby was whaiting to realese THE GT 350...5.0L supercharger POWER !!!
@kreyslerxfyre I'm a Ford Tech. You're SO very right. Only in the next year or so are we going to start to see the REAL potential in this little powerhouse.
It's got a good tone to it, but like any other clean sheet engine, I'd only buy in after 2 or 3 years of life in the real world. There is almost always a recall or two for some stupid five dollar part here or there that did not break in testing and only goes bad after 70 or 80 thousand real life miles.
the legendary 302ci/5.0 is back and better than ever 412 hp thats more power than camaros 6.2 v8 which with a auto trans only makes 400 hp. mustang>camaro
Yea but chevy still uses the old push rod v8s. The V8 for the Auto camaro is a L99 which is a fuel saving version. The LS3 (dumbed down really) is still higher than the stangs horses. Camaros have always had more power anyways. If Chevy ditched its push rod style it would defiantly be a more powerful engine no doubt but I guess the technology they use is alot cheaper. I'm just happy to see that Ford finally addressed the Mustangs power issue. I can finally say that its not underpowered.
i think we all know how the new 5.0 is going to compare to the camaro. symple power weight ratio puts it 2 to 3 tenths faster in the 1/4. the curb weight of the auto which is what i would get for drag racing tips the scale at 3652 lbs making it 200 - 300lbs lighter with around the same power this car will see 12.7 stock mark my words driver mod with drag radials otherwise stock mid 12s no problem 1.7- 60ft with the optional 3.73 gears= very upset camaro owners. few boltons it will see 11s
i love that the 5.0 is comming back.. i feel bad for the ppl who bought 2010's tho.. i mean the 2011 v6 has only 10 less hp then the 2010's.. at any rate ford fans rejoice.. and those bow-tie wearing fools at chevy better look out!
Apparently Ford has really done their homework. By Implementing the Japanese style 4 valve per cylinder and some DOHC's i believe (chevys are still stuck on push rods) This thing will be able to output more power per liter like you mentioned.
@tokyosmash earth and i should have put many instead of most but alot of ohv engine do perform like this a 350 rocket has a really thick block making it stronger and has alot more modifcations than a normal 350
this is rated at 25 mpg with AUTOMATIC..the manual is only 24.....WHAT THE F*CK?!?! i don't care how much bullshit technology you use. an automatic will NEVER get better mileage than a stick. NEVER. either those ratings are bogus, or they purposly screwed up their manual to make everybody buy automatics and make more money with even more technology.
Answer: Different gear ratios. For example, one of the ways they increased MPG's going to the larger engine was by adding a very tall 6th gear. The reason the auto may fare better in MPG than the stick, is because the auto comes with a 3.15 ratio in the rear, while the manual comes with 3.55 - and an option for 3.73. Higher number = more torque multiplication = more accelleration, but at the expense of gas mileage.
@creamyfilling102 - You also have to take into account the final drive ratio. I think the automatics have a taller O/D gear then the manuals (slightly). Torque converters aren't too big of a deal with modern "lock up" auto's like they were in the past. Also the numbers that are out there could just be wrong and the final values also.
Looks like the 7,000 RPM redline is just for bragging rights. Looks to me like power dropped to almost nothing about 6,500 RPM. The redline on that engine should be around 6,500.
I looked through that article and saw where they put the supercharger on, but didn't see them mention replacing the connecting rods.
The 5.0 magazine had a big in-depth review of the engine, saying that the new rods are thin, light, and balanced for the 5.0, and able to take the punishment in naturally aspirated form.
But they said those rods wouldn't last and would have to be replaced if someone put a super charger on it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The GT350 will have 550hp..close to the current shelby. The problem with pushing it over 600 is the Coyote is 11:1 compression which makes it limited to boost without blowing it up.
according to the car and driver magazine that i got in the mail about 2 days ago said that the 2011 ford mustang, the 5.0L V8 has a compression ratio of 9.8:1.
@xbox15rttt im a subscriber too and the CR for the 3V 4.6 is 9.8:1. the CR for the new 4V 5.0 is 11:1 which unlike other mustangs, isnt the best for slapping the usual supercharger. it doesnt mean it cant be done, it just means 2 things..#1 because of the high CR, max boost for stock applications will be lower to limit detonation and #2 the tune is even more important. its possible to run 11:1 CR and have a turbo or supercharger but the tune has to be spot on.
from a supercharger is would see how it wouldn't benefit as much. but with the right size of turbo and such the response would be extremely noticiable don't you agree?. With a low end super charger I could see the thing crapping out but last i heard this thing can handle up to 26 psi of boost. now if you put that 26 psi into it when its running at high rpm's you should be good
By far the best and most detailed article on the development and testing of the engine.
Its awesome, and I think its an example of the great improvements in flexibility and innovation that Ford has begun to show. I think Mullaly (sp.) has started to chip away at the bureaucratic culture that has anchored that company for decades.
Great example of the change that can happen when you fire inept leadership and bring up some hungry and younger talent.
@andrestnt Yes, I heard that from a buddy of mine who has an earlier supercharged model. Rods are fine on the stock engine, but pushed maybe over the edge if you supercharge. I'm guessing if Ford sees this as a spoiler for too many upgraders it's likely they'll address the issue, maybe as a running production change.
How can believe that if you have enough for one Mustang GT, you have enough for 2. Because that's basically what your saying. The GT350 has to be sent to Shelby as it's an aftermarket upgrade, not a factory option.
@BumbleBee. I just had a close to 7 minute erection watching the new 2011 GT350, now, they are talking over 515+HP!!! if that SHELBY GT350 starts at that price id go buy one tomorrow!! Chevy probably has a trick up their sleeve like the RS / Z28 deal, but id so take the SHELBY over anything else. And better news, if the GT350 is making that much HP then that means the GT500 could probably be well over 600+HP to go neck&neck with the costly vette Z0 family
well people ford just came back out with the shelby GT350 and it has the new 5.0 engine in it and its super charged no word yet on the hp ratings but its expected to be around 500 to 550 hp just thought id let yas know. Price starting around 33 thousand dollars, and theres no word yet about the curb weight but expect it to weigh about 200 pounds more then the gt model, and theres no word yet on a 2011 gt500. if you want to see the new GT350 just search it as 2011 SHELBY GT350
If I wanted a 4.0L that revs to 8700rpm it would be a ferrari! the great thing about american v-8s is you dont have to snot rev them to make power! the new 5.0 probably makes more torque idling then the excuse for a v-8 from bmw, speaking of own ideas bmw had to buy a california design company so they could actually make a decent looking car!!
This has been flagged as spam show

These things make about 425 hp at the crank stock. Friggin' amazing for a 5.0 liter n/a engine.
scdevon 1 year ago
@scdevon 2008 bmw m3 n/a 4.0 v8 = 420 hp, 2008 lexus is-f n/a 5.0 litre v8 = 416, 2008 onward audi rs4, n/a 4.2 litre v8 = 420.. i could go on, fords late on the train, though better than dodge, they could only squeeze 425 from a 6.1 litre hemi, kinda sad if you ask me. face it europeans engineer better engines, period, but only over the past ten years.
hamronD73 1 year ago
@hamronD73 All those cars were close to twice the money.
drewzx3 1 year ago
@hamronD73 yeah, but, high horsepower puts a lot of stress on smaller displacement engines. They have to work much harder to make the power and the power comes on later. The 5.0 makes a not unsubstantial amount of horsepower, keeps the torque up and will last a long time. Europeans make great engines, but it's the combination of the engine, powertrain and suspension dynamics.
1ightweightSukka 1 year ago
@hamronD73 umm I think you need to do a little more research. First off don't bring me factory numbers because they are NEVER accurate! TQ matters just as much if not more than HP depending on what your trying to do so don't forget that either. Also what it puts out at the flywheel is pretty much irrelevant. The RW's are what matter. Dependability is crap in MOST europeans and expensive as hell for parts to boot. 11' Mustang is damn good on the track! Be an American spend your money here!!!
spence141 11 months ago

I'd go Mustang if looking for a pony car, period. Even has Brembo's stock..and sick engine technology, this is the real deal, best GT ever, second best Mustang ever (Terminator)
HypnoticSuggestion 1 year ago 2
@HypnoticSuggestion The 2011 are gonna be faster than the terminators to! They make 395 rwhp while the terminator made 364...i'm not taking anything away from the 03's because i love them to i'm just sayin : )
TheSpider1200 1 year ago
@TheSpider1200 I certainly hope the new GT is faster than my Cobra was stock. It will say a lot about where Ford is going with the mustang, and too many people have been waiting far too long for a truly fast GT.
Until MY2011, I still considered the Terminator the best Mustang ever built.
Regardless, I'm considering buying one, but that would mean selling both of my Imports.
I don't know how I would like owning two. But the GT would be more street-able, and could serve as a daily driver.

its actually 6-bolt main. your forgetting about the side or cross bolts, one on each side of the main caps. all Aluminum 4.6's have been 6-bolt mains since the 4V DOHC was 1st introduced in '96

IEATZR1 10 months ago
I believe it's actually 6 bolt main, 4 and 2 that are bolted on each side of the block into the main cap " simular to my 03 Cobra in design but you're correct it's a whole new design all aluminum block and cylinder heads. Think of what the power would be if it was a 6.2 liter engine in a mustang. (same cubic inches as the obama motors camaro)...... Still at only 302 cubic inches it is impressive !
IEATZR1 1 year ago

@kreyslerxfyre This engine is the new generation of the modular family. this is supposed to be the new "small block" version of the modular. the 6.2l that will be found in the raptor is the "big block" version of the modular engine. the ford gt engine is very simular to this 5.0l.

It's got a good tone to it, but like any other clean sheet engine, I'd only buy in after 2 or 3 years of life in the real world. 09adge13 2 years ago
@09adge13
Thats 426 hp for the camaros.
himynameisbryan06 2 years ago
Yea but chevy still uses the old push rod v8s. The V8 for the Auto camaro is a L99 which is a fuel saving version. The LS3 (dumbed down really) is still higher than the stangs horses. Camaros have always had more power anyways. If Chevy ditched its push rod style it would defiantly be a more powerful engine no doubt but I guess the technology they use is alot cheaper. I'm just happy to see that Ford finally addressed the Mustangs power issue. I can finally say that its not underpowered.

50fordman 2 years ago 2
i think we all know how the new 5.0 is going to compare to the camaro. symple power weight ratio puts it 2 to 3 tenths faster in the 1/4. the curb weight of the auto which is what i would get for drag racing tips the scale at 3652 lbs making it 200 - 300lbs lighter with around the same power this car will see 12.7 stock mark my words driver mod with drag radials otherwise stock mid 12s no problem 1.7- 60ft with the optional 3.73 gears= very upset camaro owners. few boltons it will see 11s
herberv 2 years ago
Ford stated the connecting rods are the weakest part of the engine, or most at risk if you decide to supercharge +550 horses.
Headshot426 2 years ago
i love that the 5.0 is comming back.. i feel bad for the ppl who bought 2010's tho.. i mean the 2011 v6 has only 10 less hp then the 2010's.. at any rate ford fans rejoice.. and those bow-tie wearing fools at chevy better look out!
newedgemustang 2 years ago
The 5.0 puts out over 400 horses with five litres.
The new 6.2 litre camaro puts out about the same.
So Ford Is Making The Same Power As Chevy But With A Litre Less. (;
The New Mustangs Make About 84 Horses Per Litre.
01CobraDude 2 years ago
Apparently Ford has really done their homework. By Implementing the Japanese style 4 valve per cylinder and some DOHC's i believe (chevys are still stuck on push rods) This thing will be able to output more power per liter like you mentioned.

creamyfilling102 2 years ago
@creamyfilling102
wrong.
TroutButter 2 years ago
how so? it's a proven fact. torque converters require extra energy to operate. a foot and clutch do a better job than electronics ever will.
creamyfilling102 2 years ago
Answer: Different gear ratios. For example, one of the ways they increased MPG's going to the larger engine was by adding a very tall 6th gear. The reason the auto may fare better in MPG than the stick, is because the auto comes with a 3.15 ratio in the rear, while the manual comes with 3.55 - and an option for 3.73. Higher number = more torque multiplication = more accelleration, but at the expense of gas mileage.
steveilee 2 years ago
Oops.. should have specified.. that was in response to "creamyfilling102"'s post about auto vs manual MPG.
steveilee 2 years ago
also depends how shitty they are with stick

drive the car and then talk i have a auto and a 5spd foxbody and i was surprised when i noticed my 5spd wasted more gas??
94STANG562 2 years ago
@creamyfilling102 - You also have to take into account the final drive ratio. I think the automatics have a taller O/D gear then the manuals (slightly). Torque converters aren't too big of a deal with modern "lock up" auto's like they were in the past. Also the numbers that are out there could just be wrong and the final values also.

biebs53 2 years ago
Okay.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The GT350 will have 550hp..close to the current shelby. The problem with pushing it over 600 is the Coyote is 11:1 compression which makes it limited to boost without blowing it up.
Headshot426 2 years ago

Headshot426 2 years ago
lol i just realized i read the magazine wrong :(. but the engine is supposed to have 4 bolt mains.
xbox15rttt 2 years ago
@xbox15rttt im a subscriber too and the CR for the 3V 4.6 is 9.8:1. the CR for the new 4V 5.0 is 11:1 which unlike other mustangs, isnt the best for slapping the usual supercharger. it doesnt mean it cant be done, it just means 2 things..#1 because of the high CR, max boost for stock applications will be lower to limit detonation and #2 the tune is even more important. its possible to run 11:1 CR and have a turbo or supercharger but the tune has to be spot on.
seniorcat03 1 year ago
Not sure why there's a bunch of negative shit about my post. It can't run as much boost as the 4.6 with 11.1 compression. Its stated by Ford
Headshot426 2 years ago
@Headshot426
from a supercharger is would see how it wouldn't benefit as much. but with the right size of turbo and such the response would be extremely noticiable don't you agree?. With a low end super charger I could see the thing crapping out but last i heard this thing can handle up to 26 psi of boost. now if you put that 26 psi into it when its running at high rpm's you should be good
AllCarsAllTheTime2 2 years ago

By far the best and most detailed article on the development and testing of the engine.
Its awesome, and I think its an example of the great improvements in flexibility and innovation that Ford has begun to show. I think Mullaly (sp.) has started to chip away at the bureaucratic culture that has anchored that company for decades.
Great example of the change that can happen when you fire inept leadership and bring up some hungry and younger talent.
Headshot426 2 years ago
@Headshot426 if the PTWA technique works out for the 5.4L
they should apply it to this engine and lose about 20lb from
removing the iron cylinder sleeves.
andrestnt 2 years ago
@andrestnt if you your gonna go with f/i then the connecting rods are the weak link. if not they are fine with more power
braddfordy 2 years ago
@andrestnt Yes, I heard that from a buddy of mine who has an earlier supercharged model. Rods are fine on the stock engine, but pushed maybe over the edge if you supercharge. I'm guessing if Ford sees this as a spoiler for too many upgraders it's likely they'll address the issue, maybe as a running production change.

How can believe that if you have enough for one Mustang GT, you have enough for 2. Because that's basically what your saying. The GT350 has to be sent to Shelby as it's an aftermarket upgrade, not a factory option.
bezzle67 2 years ago
I hate to disagree with you on the GT350, because i love it, but that $33,000 is put on after you buy a 2011 Mustang GT. So more like $63,000.
