"Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming on the same amount of land.""in developed countries, yields were almost equal on organic and conventional farms. In developing countries, food production could double or triple using organic methods" sciencedaily"dot"com/releases/2007/07/070711134523.htm
Conventionally bred(used in organic) nutrient enhanced crops already exist, and organic can reduce poverty, nutrient deficits and hunger in poor countries.
"Today's scientific evidence demonstrates that agroecological methods outperform the use of chemical fertilizers in boosting food production where the hungry live-especially in unfavorable environments.""To date agroecological projects have shown an average crop yield increase of 80% in 57 developing countries, with an average increase of 116% for all African projects."srfood.org/index.php/en/component/content/article/1174-report-agroecology-and-the-right-to-food
"Organic farming can lead to increased food production – in many cases a doubling of yields has been seen""the average crop yield increase was even higher for these projects: 116 per cent increase for all African projects and 128 per cent increase for the projects in East Africa""These findings are backed up by studies from Asia and Latin America that concluded that organic farming can reduce poverty in an environmentally friendly way." unctad.org/en/docs/ditcted200715_en.pdf
Most varieties of unpolished rice actually do have beta carotene, it is polished rice that doesn't have any beta carotene. Numerous other crops that can be grown in developing countries that are already available have beta carotene an other nutrients. Also most studies suggest organic farming increases nutrient content in food, has higher yields in poor countries, is more profitable than transgenic crops(like Golden Rice) and therefore reduces poverty(main cause of hunger) in poor countries.
Conventional breeding has created numerous nutrient enhanced crops with high levels of beta carotene(Orange Maize, Orange Sweet Potato, High Beta Carotene Tomato, etc.), these are better solutions than Golden Rice, but you probably never heard of them. You heard of Golden Rice because the Council for Biotechnology Information spent millions of dollars advertising Golden Rice, instead of spending that money to actually help hungry people with vitamin A deficiencies.
Polished rice(what Golden rice was made for) may be linked to increases in diabetes. nih.gov/researchmatters/june2010/06282010diabetes.htm Africans may already be more prone to diabetes. diabetes.diabetesjournals. org/content/52/4/1047.short Native African crops like Cleome gynandra have beta carotene and other nutrients. Why give Africans $100,000,000 polished GM rice and maybe increase diabetes, instead of Cleome gynandra they already have for Vit A?
