But you see, beedieeyez, Nikka has some Southern roots. She says that her mom's from there, though I know that Nikka was born in Japan. And I don't think that she's 'affecting' that twang, judging from her speaking voice. I'm a singer too, I'm black, and I don't take anything away from her! Not all white American soul sisters are perpetrators! Teena Marie is my homegirl, and she's the real deal too! I've loved her music since I was a child, and she's still fierce! Soul has no color.

This black woman agrees. While there will never be another Teena Marie, for me Nikka the heir apparent. Not Anastasia, not Joss Stone, Nikka Costa. Nikka is like some kind of freak alien love child between Teena Marie, Sly Stone, and Prince (with a touch of Janis Joplin thrown in), and me being a child of American R&B with parents who grew up with it, played it , and lived it, it dosen't get much realer than THAT.

While I absolutely love her voice, still, it doesn't project that truthful pain telling me she's lived through the heartache that she sings about. Her voice may echo the greats like Aretha, Etta, Janis.... But if you sing your voice will reveal almost everything about you. And Joss' tells me alot about what she hasn't been through.
