why does everyone use super reverbs for SRV tone? he used a vibroverb didnt he? I guess 10's are closer to a 15 than 12's. do you do the transformer mods and mistmatch? how do you implement the SS rec?
Ok, that's it...Im going back to a Fender Super Reverb. Thanks alot, now I have to go without food and shelter for a month but I'll be rock'en on the street corner! LOL
@007snipershot dude i literally have no furniture except for a bed....and sitting beside that bed is a fender super reverb a g&l legacy special and about 900 bucks in pedals ....ill buy a couch....one day
Yep, you channeled SRV there quite well for a bit! I wanna say that the only thing separating you two is the playing technique! Good show man! Keep it up!
Hey Tyler! i was just wondering do you build amps from scratch using custom kits? if you would consider doing this how much would it take? i'm a huge Sayce and SRV fan and amp rebuilding my blues rig. hope you see this and reply!!
i got me a super back in march, i love it......not looking to mod it yet, just wana enjoy the stock speakers for now....in the futured id love too.......what tubes u using.....
ur overdrive sounds so clean and crisp!!! what kinda od pedal do u use.....? oh and for all the ppl out there dissing the stevie licks......get a life!!! u know what good music is and ur using to demo ur amp.......good job dude!
did the EV's have THE biggest huge noticible dif in tone? You nailed a SRV tone. I have a 67 blackface super and a 73 silverface that both have Jensens in them.(blackface has jensen alnico and ceramic mix). TO the guy that does not want to be a dick. if you dont have a reference tone how do you know how to compare. Same goes to people who demo certain hendrix style pedals and do not play the artists songs.
They are a pretty big leap in the right direction. Speakers/tubes/transformers are the biggest factors in how an amp sounds. EV speakers are so even throughout the frequency spectrum that its like taking a blanket off your amp.
@gamedojo sorry man I'm not trying to be a dick - I would just like to hear some original stuff that sounds like YOU - not Stevie. That's been beaten to death already by a bizillion people.
Not a problem. Just remember I'm not demoing my playing. I was demoing amp mods that I did to a super reverb for an SRVish tone. Playing in a non-srv manner wouldn't make much sense. Check out my Bassman cranked video for non-SRV playing.
You'd be surprised how far NOS tubes and good speakers can improve the reissue supers. The circuit is a bit tough to mod, because of the printed board, but experiment with tubes, speakers, and cranking it!
Simply put, disconnection makes the amp respond and feel better overall. Simpler circuit without uneeded paths. I don't change the amps, just make them give out more of what already sounds good. When I do this, the amps can be turned up to 10 and sound fantastic. Normal use does NOT mean cranking the amps. the clean is amazing. But no one seems to care about clean tones as much as cranked. Its probably the energy... I'd love to hear your rig. Have any clips?
Watched the before and after. Sounds fantastic - nice work man. What was the damage on the work done? Time spent? Would these changes be equally effective on a Deluxe Reverb?
Should work just fine with a deluxe, though the lower wattage powertubes/transformers and speaker config will make the end result a bit different, it will still be an improvement. Check out my website in the video's info for more information. THanks!:
Value? I use standard IN4007 diodes. You can build "sag" into a SS rectifier by using a high power resistor in line, but I've always found the sag found from tube rectifiers and the power section in general is just making a bad sounding/hard to play amp a little better by using a "band-aide". One should get the softer and better feeling amp looking somewhere else. IMO
Sayce is the best around foe sure ive sat at the brass elephant bar Monrovia Ca. for three years listening to Philip jam for hours getn his chops down. Joe Bonamassa walked in one night and him and Sayce jammed out on three songs , was an amazing night! Philip is unreal!
Unfortunately, I'm up here in Minnesota. But I'll tell you, since I just have customers send the Chassis and NO cabinet, I've had no problems with shipping. They fit into a pretty small size box (considering) and they hold up well. let me know if you're ever in the area! :)
Fenders don't overdrive all that much. The way I setup these fenders is to get the drive and compression but controllable and clear. Another thing to remember is i've got very low-output single coil pickups. You put a high output Les Paul into that amp and it will scream:)
Is the Master Volume you are using the Lar-Mar dual 250K pot(+2.2M safety resistors) version from the epic metroamp thread?
(Adapted from the Ken Fischer Type 2 master volume)
I have been wanting to try that updated type 2 MV in one of my AB763 type amps. I currently have the type I master and don't really dig it as it changes the feel too much.
Yes. I turned the normal channel's bright switch into a defeat switch for the normal channel. THe norm channel wouldn't work without that tube installed.
This particular design IS completely out of the circuit. Most master volumes bleed the signal to ground, so no matter how high you have the knob, you still have some sort of resistor resistance to ground (usually 1meg)... but this design uses the amp's bias supply as the ground reference. Meaning all the way up, the circuit sees the signal path as 100% original.
Do you feel like disconnecting the normal channel has made the tone a little better consider there isn't as much wiring going on in the amp? Less is more alot of times, especially with handwired amps. The amp sounds great though, reguardless.
The disconnections make it sound better to ME when I'm playing the amp. It has the effect of taking the exact tone of the amp and simply giving you more of it. Hard to explain. Not so much a tone altering effect. It simply makes the original tone more "juicy".
Sorry man, if you notice this amp was a customers amp and it has been sent back to him. If you ask him "Stk1520" I bet he'll be happy to make a video for you!
how much do you charge to do these mods because i have a 68 super reverb that needs some tlc. What do you think about the stock oxford speakers in them.
Doesn't really matter. I add no hyperbole or even declaration on any "better" sounds produced. I simply posted clips of before and after. If someone is influenced that much by the mere fact that both are posted and its "unsaid, but assumed" that the modded has to be better, then there is nothing I can do about it.
So where exactly are you installing the PPIV volume on the chassis? Are you drilling a hole in the chassis or using an existing one for a new purpose (like the volume on channel one would make a ton of sense, since on one ever uses channel one anyway)?
Since the customer doesn't need the speed control (the trem is disconnected) I install it there. You don't want it installed at the normal channel's volume control since its VERY far away from the power tubes and power coupling caps. The longer the lines needed to make this connection, the more capicatance the shielded wires create, and the more noise they pick up.
Hey Tyler - fantastic tone, technique and soul. One question for you - were these mods carried out on a blackface Super or reissue? It's a brave man who athourises mods on an original. By the way - those pickups sound fantastic - think I'll have to get a set.
This amp is far from original. Its a 1970 Super thats been gutted and updated to AB763 specs way before I got my hands on it.
A truely un-touched Fender should probably not be modified, but most of the "mods" I perform are very simple and unobtrusive. They can be reversed if needed, and I do return all parts I replace to the customer.
Just curious...When you replaced the tube rectifier with a solid state one, did you add in a "sag simulation" circuit? If so, how did it compare in sound and response to the tube one?
