Well seems like the old owners were mistaken. You all seem to travel with them just fine! :) I'm afraid if I took the budgies they'd be gone....in a dogs stomach, or in the rafters.
@LiveFromtheBasement Nope it was a total of $300. The owners couldn't take them any more. They wanted to be free from careing for them so they could go on vacations and travel. They said the birds keep them from being able to do that.
Ohhh noo we are very sure to clean anything. Harlie will actually hold it up to 2 hours. I try to take her to a grassy area and do a shake shake on my arm and she will go on command.
thats awesome they must be such well socialized birds with you taking them everywhere but i always thought people say not to take your birds to pet stores because they could get diseases?
Actually I am VERY careful to avoid most dogs. People in pet stores have their dogs on leashes also. I have never run across a out of control do in a pet store in 5 years.
I cut their wings once a year. :-) the rest of the year they are flighted. This causes more of an attitude, = (free spirit) But that's OK we have an aviary for that.
ah ok thats why i wondered why they had no intentions of flying off, they are awesome birds pitty they are so expensive, you probably have better prices in America in Australia they are bloody expensive.
WHOA! 300? i wanted one here in canada and it was 7 000! although it was fully matured tame and hand fed so i guess that would make it more expensive! =D beutiful birds
You know its funny because I used to work and Petsmart and now I take my rescued B&G and my cockatoo with me and thay is how we pick out toys! Plus they always want to stay on the buggy too!
Peep I found a dog harness I cut off the dog part and replaced with soft elastic to fit Allie. I just about pitched a fit, that it fits her. Size small, fits her.
Allie was SO cute running around the back yard with a leash on.
I am being very careful though. I dont want to effect her natural egg process or hurt her in any way.
Is a macaw a good bird for a first time parrot owner? I was thinking "no way", but saw a young 'Severe Macaw' for sale from a breeder and was rethinking things.
Severe Macaws are smaller and not as hard as B&G's. They do still live a LONG time. You need to do more homework if your still asking though.
I would describe human/bird relationship as a mairage, because thats how much attention they need. The only difference is you can never stop paying attention unless you want destructive behavior.
If you think it wont happen... think again. birds are as demanding as humans.
My pionus has no problem with trips he sits on my shoulder happy just to be with me. My green cheek gets so upset he pukes everytime we take a car ride.
Great video! Our umbrella cockatoo "Sabrina" loves going to Petsmart to pick out her own toys & treats. However, she cannot ride in the car, she get carsick and pukes after a couple miles, so daddy has taught her to ride on the Harley with him, and she loves it! If she hears the motorcyle start up and she's not on it she gets mad. Look for Sabrina riding her motorcycle in Spartanburg, sc. Also see her videos on utube funauntkelley
Usually petco's have their birds behind glass enclosures. How would you know if all birds at all petcos have psittacosis unless you are a vet and tested them all? I think they are fine on the cart only away from the birds. It's nice that you expose them to other things than just a living room like most people. Aviary even better. I just did the same for my CAG.
You should be really careful doing that. All of the birds throughout petsmart have been sick with psittacosis for months. Even taking your birds near them in the same store could get them sick.
Yes I agree. I haven't been in the store for about a year now. We built an aviary last summer in our back yard and they go there now. No more exposure to ttore birds.
I love it! The birds are picking out some new toys and treats. We have a Blue & Gold who sits on my husband's shoulder when we go for walks or when he mows the lawn. They're such cool birds.
At the moment 15. They are rotating all the time though, as they get adopted out. 3 are permanent pets, not supported by FCBS and two are permanent residence due to health issues.
Ha hah You didn't try to take pics of them did you? I've only have trouble when I go to the mall. They hate cameras. Normally I don't have trouble in pet storews they are used to me locally.
your husband bought the wrong toys. it looks like they like the shopping cart the best. my shamrock macaw likes old remotes, small kids toys, etc. most of the good toys are free
Hah he... They sure did destroy them when they got home, for being the wrong toys. We actually spent almost $2,000 last year for Christmas presents alone. Currently we have 20 rescues so what one bird done like another does. theres not one toy we have had go unused. We do shop at goodwills, and the like these days.
When I have the time, I'll cut wood and drill holes in them and let him go at it, just got to be careful of the type of wood and mites, you must make sure it's 100% positively mite free, they're are non toxic sprays. I keep all the toy parts that he breaks or finishes, so I have lots of clips and lots of chains for putting toys on.
Also we have had a HUGE amount of support from the local community this year that we are very grateful for. They have kept us supplied in baby blankets, pillow cases, food, lots of toys, and we received 7 cages just today. This is a good year for our heartbroken babies.
I buy and dye my own popsicle sticks from vegetable and bird safe dyes.. I use old spoons and attach them to older toys or make my new toys and plastic baby spoons are great, too. I bought a box of acrylic cups and fixed and attached old bells on the inside and with the spoons.
i take my shamrock macaw to malls but eventually get kicked out because ignorant security will say something like: "we don't know if it is going to bite". or: "that needs to be in a box". my bird went up at a 45 degree angle just after getting scared of a car backfire. i was very lucky and fire brought out a ladder truck and retrieved "birdie". i now use a short kitten leash hooked to her band and if she were to get scared, i could gently pull her to the ground.
Why don't you clip her flight feathers? No matter how well you train a bird it doesn't mean that they'll return to you if they get frightened. If you don't want to fully deflight your bird, you could try clipping a few flight feathers so that they really can't get too much height and then glide back down?
I agree with you. When we got these two birds they were very weak as for flying. This day I would never take them out again without a carry cage or clipped. There is a big difference from their exercise level today. The biggest reason a person I hear looses a bird is due to cars in parking lots, or walking down the street.
Additionally... As you gain experience you learn that it is so easy to make a mistake and let your guard down that one time and thats when something terrible happens and you swallow your heart. if your lucky then you have learned and chances are you take less chances. Grats. on getting your bird back.
Indeed, I also work with birds at a pet store. I don't know how many quakers, conures and the like have made their way to the rafters where even though they are still in the store, we can't get them back down. When we used to get our baby birds in, they weren't clipped and sometimes it took a few days to get to it. But they were all kept in a room with double doors. Well, one of the staff let them both open and as soon as she had the bird step up, it was gone.
Even my own Senegal when we took him shopping similar to the macaws, a dog was eyeing him, so I tried to hold him tight and shimmy around, he's clipped, but he's moulting, so he has two flight feathers and for some reason the little bugger was getting a little height and the dog startled him and he jumped and my boyfriend caught him, thank God. I'll never take him back to my store (what a shame, too, because he loves it)
a great vid-you obviously love your birds! we have two macaws and would love to start taking them with us, please tell me how you trained them to travel. thanks so much.
Make sure you have a good vet that can clip their wings and also learn to predict your pets moves to a tee... Then keep them away from anything that cause them harm or someone else. It helps if they know not to get off their playpens and such at home already. These are 9 - 11 years old and were raised going to work in a vets lobby.
How adorable! They look so happy! They obviously trust you guys SO much, thats great! Did they fly off at all in the pet store or were they as well behaved as they were in the video? Great stuff!
That is amazing. My mother has a friend with a parrot and it hardly gets any attention. The poor thing is almost feral. Those two are a credit to you.
Do Macaws make good pets when properly taken care of? Ive been thinking about getting one forever. Money, noise, space, time, none of that is an issue. Ive spent alot of time around parrots before, so I have experience. The only thing holding me back is the biting issue, how horrible are macaw bites? Worse than a cockatoo? VERY cute video, by the way. Ive watched it about ten times now!
Our Macaws havn't biten anyone as of yet. I think It depends on how well you get to know your bird and just dont put the opertunity out there. People watch our macaws but they dont touch often. Well at the sanctuaryt yes but not in public. Harlie is a REAL lovie. She doesn't ever show any sign of aggression. I can roll her over on her back even.
I take my budgies to the store in a mesh backpack and let them pick out one thing. They usually don't pick bird toys. They like rodent toys and fruit when we go to Meier.
All my local pet stores know me too lol. ; ) Lucky birds. It's so wonderful that you are spreading the message about responsible animal care. I have met so many people working at pet stores who do not know anything about the animals they are selling! Some of the mall pet stores are so bad I can't go in, it just makes me cry. Keep spreading the word!
Thank you! we have volunteers almost every week now. We are so thankful. With birds you have a life they know exactly what you are doing cause they are watching you all the time LOL
That is so true some of the small stores by me are scroungie and very dusty .I went in one that had so much dust on the toy you couldn't see the color of the toy .I saw it when i first walked in and turned and walked OUT.With a few dirty words comming out of my mouth. I have no idea how the store looked further in.Just never went back.
I'd like to keep my 3-month-old sun conure well socialized and be able to take him to the parrot store and bird club meetings when he's older. How do you suggest taking him out without him jumping off my shoulder (his wings are clipped), calming any fear of the outdoors, keeping him safe from germs, etc.? Also, is it safe to have him on my shoulder while I'm gardening?
Do you spray your plants with bug spray? are there any trees near by? also Not good to be near a road with a bird on your shoulder, wings cliped or not! emagine a car honking a horn as it passes and your bird gets hit. It looks like they are so free but actually its very carefully observed LOL they have wonderful carriers also. We normally use them. I do let them out in the pet store or for educational seminars, stuff like that.
thats so cute, i love it, im sitting here watching all these bird videos with my birdy and roxy, my bird, is like, where are they, ill take them down, but, she is only a jenday conure, so i think your two, might win against my little roxy.
I work for the same store here in Nebraska, and it's always a treat to see people bring in their feathered family memebers! I cant believe how many people I have helped that have bought parrots through other pet stores and dont know a single thing about them. I'm glad I am able to help them with proper care and the learning tools they need in order to give their pet the life they deserve. You guys keep up the awesome work! You guys are true heroes.
She don't complain to much. Besides she's deffinately the one that wears the pants in the house. LOL Ivy worships the ground she walks on. tipical woman trait. heh heh don't know what you got till it's gone?
I like your birds and I think the music is a great combination. I have a parrotlet named Chip and he goes with me to the pet store as well; he is `almost` as well behaved as your Macaws
He works as a electrical job quotes and sales and I am a photo specialest full time. we work different days. So at least 4 days a week someone is home all day. Then our hours stager so they only get left about 5 hours ever. I uasually come home for lunch and give them all snacks :-)
Haha every one I talk to wants one. Can you believe I got Ivy and Harlie from someone that didn't wan't them any more? I don't judge the cercumstances though. They did seem like really nice people and I did get them very healthy condition. Plus they were all crying when they left. So you never know what the cause is.
I adopted a yellow collar macaw 4 yrs ago when he was 9 yrs old, and now he's 13 yrs old. The person I got him from, think he been thru too many homes for unknown reason, the person thinks he's too much of a talker? But he's a talker, got personality, and he's a hoot! lol.
That is lovely. I am so glad your darling macaws have such a fun life, of new toys and outings and car rides...so many parrots just get stuck in a cage forever
Nope. I am however very careful of touching from others so they wont get sick. I just fib once in a while and say they may nip LOL so people don't try to poke at them if that makes sence? Just imagine someone poking a finger in your face all the time?LOL
Cute video, very beautiful birds the feathers are incredible.I have 2 eclectus bird my self and we also do the pet store travel or take the kids to school with the birds is realy fun.once again very nice birds.and you have a lot of creativity.Love the video.
Yes They really impress the children. We are currently teaching our birds to be VERY socialized. I would like to see them on outings with no stress or agression of any kind no matter who I bring out. One of our birds has never been able to go out for that reason. I need to know I am in control at all times. I wouldnt want anyone to ever get bit. It hasn't ever happened so far.
uhhhhh since your bird chewed on that pet toy you gotta buy it

I definitely recommend clipped wings and hopefully they are used to their tail being held for safety in the parking lot unless its empty.
Make sure you study all the things that can go wrong first. then there can always be something you didn't think of.
Treat them as if they were your own child. YES be that protective!

a great vid-you obviously love your birds! we have two macaws and would love to start taking them with us, please tell me how you trained them to travel. thanks so much.

Ive watched it about ten times now!
rennaben 4 years ago
Our Macaws havn't biten anyone as of yet. I think It depends on how well you get to know your bird and just dont put the opertunity out there. People watch our macaws but they dont touch often. Well at the sanctuaryt yes but not in public. Harlie is a REAL lovie. She doesn't ever show any sign of aggression. I can roll her over on her back even.

That's so funny. We can't take our cockatiel anywhere, he's such a brat.
You have a great connection with your birds. :)

what a good idea, letting them pick their own toys! my birds have so many toys they dont like, so when i find one they do like, its such a thrill!

Lol Mail them to me :-) I'll put them to use. LOL

Also, is it safe to have him on my shoulder while I'm gardening?
mizpriz 4 years ago
Do you spray your plants with bug spray? are there any trees near by? also Not good to be near a road with a bird on your shoulder, wings cliped or not! emagine a car honking a horn as it passes and your bird gets hit. It looks like they are so free but actually its very carefully observed LOL they have wonderful carriers also. We normally use them. I do let them out in the pet store or for educational seminars, stuff like that.

Especially in the last video when Ivy was asking for kisses. They are definately a normal couple... very handsome.

But he's a talker, got personality, and he's a hoot! lol.
Rodeogirl73 3 years ago
That is lovely. I am so glad your darling macaws have such a fun life, of new toys and outings and car rides...so many parrots just get stuck in a cage forever

Ohh noooo not here. Thats very unhealthy for the birds. However no one is free unsupervised.

Nope. I am however very careful of touching from others so they wont get sick. I just fib once in a while and say they may nip LOL so people don't try to poke at them if that makes sence? Just imagine someone poking a finger in your face all the time?LOL
