Not sure whats more frustring learning to gain speed like this on drums or gaining speed on picking with guitar... metronome is your bestfriend and your enemy...
This is a great lesson. I am a big Keith Carlock fan and he discusses finger technique from a traditional grip standpoint. The principal is the same. Jared teaches this technique just as Keith Carlock does. The difference is that Jared stresses the point that patience is required. He is realistic about how long it takes to get this technique. Keith doesn't (I don't think) talk about how long it took (or it takes) to get this to the point he has. Still, two great teachers and one great technique.
this ones for the ladies. ha. finger technique... but seriously, the only thing id interject into this very helpful lesson is if u can isolate each finger to build up strength and stamina. this will also help with correcting wandering-stick-syndrome as ur grip has to be pretty loose to allow the stick to fully rebound. working each finger individually will work on the micro movements u need to do to keep the stick from spinning or sliding up or down tightening ones grip will slow u down
@Reversed1ife ur ignorance is showing. playing with the fingers allows you to play faster and for longer with less energy. the faster u want to swing a pendulum, the smaller the movements have to be. hence, playing with ur fingers as a technique vs playing with ur wrists or elbow is desirable if u want to play faster and more efficiently. id say thats a pretty normal desire to have as a musician. but if getting tendonitis is normal for u then knock yourself out. nice video mr. Falk ; )
I ve been practicing it for 2 months and my left hand is really struggling is this normal? I can do 110 bpm in sixteens with my right hand but I struggle with left hand, I m hoping this is gonna get better over time, all the best Jared.
@SuperDRUMZONE I've been using it for about 1 year and a half, and it gets better and better, I almost couldn't do it at first with my left hand, but now my left hand is much more solid than my right hand with the finger technique. I can pretty much go to 250-260 bpm(16th notes both hands combined)
dear you, i have a problem. my right hand is okay with the pad solo exercises. i can hit very fast! fast!! but my left hand cannot. like my left hand stuck! and can only hit not as fast as the right one. maybe i'm a right brain person ? ! urgh, my left hand just cannot relax !!! need more practice ??
Hold your stick straight up, and than drop your wrist slightly back until the stick points like 45° or so to the outside.
You just wanna bounce the stick back up straight, only using your fingers.
It works great, since your "drumming" against gavity and get the same sensation of pull or rebound every time without having to worry about hitting the drum corretly.
People seem to get frustrated with this technique (including myself!) But keep in mind he said it took him YEARS to get it up to the speed in this video lol not just a couple of months.
i need some help... ive been practicing off this video for about a month now and i have my right hand able to go pretty fast, i can do blast beats easily, but im so unbelievably uncoordinated with my left hand that (even though ive tried to practice) im still at stage one... i cannot do anything with my left hand and its pissing me off :( any advice?
@pickleweazle141 i think the best thing to do is just practice with your left hand more and strengthen it. like just play with your left hand until you get it then you play it with both hands. i believe thats the only way to improve it
Jared, before i embark an a massive skill acquiring journey, does all of the exercise convert easily when you flip your hands over again to how you had them at the start of the video?
@iSquishMoths Yes and no, it'll help because developing those reflexes in your fingers is good for doubles, but what you need to is study the 'bounce snap' technique. Hope that helps x
Jared, I have found that when I do this exercise, all of my fingers feel like they are being controlled by the stick, but my pinky seems to have a mind of its own, separate from mine, and from the stick's. Do you know what I mean? What's wrong with what I am doing?
Can you show how to hold stick, I think the way I'm holding it i end up using my thumb to go faster, also do you use pinky? I tend to leave it sticking out.
Jared how are ya?, i'm right handed but my left hand fingers are quicker than my right hand fingers. my right wrist moves just slightly while my left wrist remains still. how can i get speed in my right hand?
Any tips on how to practice the transition between doubles using two wrist movements and doubles using fingers? It's not smooth at all when I do it...
Haha I giggle 'cause I think this is ridiculously hard, but I have never been practicing on it. I will sure get started with it anyway and really appreciating you took your time to make this video so thank you!
Jared, could I get a serious injury if a practice a lot this finger technique? How do I warm up a little bit before practicing? Thanks for your answer... :)
The spacing between the notes is so hard for me. Anyone else having that problem? Each hand sounds consistent and fine, but my single stroke roll is just garbage...
great vid! out of interest what practise pad do you have and how have you secured it? is it on a stand and fixed with a screw thread? Its just that i have never seen any like that, mine is just a pad so i have to balance it on my knee or put it on a table which is always just the wrong height so.... thanks
2) when I practise this finger control, the stick would spin clockwise (right hand position) and the pivot would shift towards the center of the stick. Do the thumb and index finger need to hold tight? But we I hold tight, I could not play relax using the rest of 3 fingers. >_<
