  • Not sure whats more frustring learning to gain speed like this on drums or gaining speed on picking with guitar... metronome is your bestfriend and your enemy...

  • I can't control the stick as well with french grip on my left hand, but better with traditional grip.... is something wrong? D:

  • is it bad when i do it if my knuckles are basically facing forward as if i was riding a bike?

  • 5:56 epic face XD thanks for another awesome tutorial my drumming really improved since i train this every day for 1 hour

  • This is a great lesson. I am a big Keith Carlock fan and he discusses finger technique from a traditional grip standpoint. The principal is the same. Jared teaches this technique just as Keith Carlock does. The difference is that Jared stresses the point that patience is required. He is realistic about how long it takes to get this technique. Keith doesn't (I don't think) talk about how long it took (or it takes) to get this to the point he has. Still, two great teachers and one great technique.

  • Excellent lesson, I take it we are to do this using the French grip, one question I have is what stand are you using for that pad

  • The damn video lagged at your greatness....literally. The beginning and end when you did the 4 and alternate singles, sticks froze

  • I just ordered a drum practice pad on ebay for $19 new

  • 1:20 to 1:30 soo true

  • This helped alot!!! thanks!

  • He forgot about the Rev

  • this ones for the ladies. ha. finger technique... but seriously, the only thing id interject into this very helpful lesson is if u can isolate each finger to build up strength and stamina. this will also help with correcting wandering-stick-syndrome as ur grip has to be pretty loose to allow the stick to fully rebound. working each finger individually will work on the micro movements u need to do to keep the stick from spinning or sliding up or down tightening ones grip will slow u down

  • What type of clamp are you using?

  • anybody know what good tempo for a begginer to start out would be?

  • There are sooo many places where I could insert a "That's what she said joke". But when it's jared falk teaching. That would be disrespectful :D

  • I tried this...it works wonders! I have 5 new girlfriends!!!! Thanks Jared!

  • Why don't you just play normally? How does using your fingers make it sound any better?

  • @Reversed1ife hey dumb what playing normal is for u? this is not about sound this is about playing better.

  • @Reversed1ife ur ignorance is showing. playing with the fingers allows you to play faster and for longer with less energy. the faster u want to swing a pendulum, the smaller the movements have to be. hence, playing with ur fingers as a technique vs playing with ur wrists or elbow is desirable if u want to play faster and more efficiently. id say thats a pretty normal desire to have as a musician. but if getting tendonitis is normal for u then knock yourself out. nice video mr. Falk ; )

  • 6:10 Epic face...

  • Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share.

  • I ve been practicing it for 2 months and my left hand is really struggling is this normal? I can do 110 bpm in sixteens with my right hand but I struggle with left hand, I m hoping this is gonna get better over time, all the best Jared.

  • @SuperDRUMZONE I've been using it for about 1 year and a half, and it gets better and better, I almost couldn't do it at first with my left hand, but now my left hand is much more solid than my right hand with the finger technique. I can pretty much go to 250-260 bpm(16th notes both hands combined)

  • I'm getting a decent beat but you're not moving your wrist at all, I must be gripping the sticks wrong

  • thankyou

  • Great clip. Very natural, honest teacher. Seven minutes well spent!

  • My left hand is so no co-operating with this :(

I suck at right hand BUT MY Left is 10x worse.

  • dear you, i have a problem. my right hand is okay with the pad solo exercises. i can hit very fast! fast!! but my left hand cannot. like my left hand stuck! and can only hit not as fast as the right one. maybe i'm a right brain person ? ! urgh, my left hand just cannot relax !!! need more practice ??

  • you're just sitting there making it look so easy.. FU :P

  • 3:35 mouth open *blink blink* thought bubble would say "is my hair good??"

  • Aka, blast beats. haha.

  • word

  • Such a nice guy, great lessons though!

  • the worse thing is when u feel confortable using just fingers on a pad then u go to a drum and nothing works :P

    This is the correct Video.

  • If you wann practise give this a try:

Hold your stick straight up, and than drop your wrist slightly back until the stick points like 45° or so to the outside.

You just wanna bounce the stick back up straight, only using your fingers.

It works great, since your "drumming" against gavity and get the same sensation of pull or rebound every time without having to worry about hitting the drum corretly.

    Try it, it works great.

  • People seem to get frustrated with this technique (including myself!) But keep in mind he said it took him YEARS to get it up to the speed in this video lol not just a couple of months.

  • @eltambore yeah only practice,

  • I have the same pad!! ^^

  • Awesome. I really wanna be able to do that! But i'm wondering...how can somebody not like this vid? I mean it's helpful, whats not to like?

  • i need some help... ive been practicing off this video for about a month now and i have my right hand able to go pretty fast, i can do blast beats easily, but im so unbelievably uncoordinated with my left hand that (even though ive tried to practice) im still at stage one... i cannot do anything with my left hand and its pissing me off :( any advice?

  • @pickleweazle141 i think the best thing to do is just practice with your left hand more and strengthen it. like just play with your left hand until you get it then you play it with both hands. i believe thats the only way to improve it

  • I believe this takes years, but I'm wondering why? Is it pure physical muscle development or more to do with your mind connecting with your fingers?

  • stare much with ya mouth open!! lol....very useful thanks

  • any tips of how to improve left hand finger strength?? o.O

  • @FailxscopeZ do what he says in the video on your left hand...

  • Jared, before i embark an a massive skill acquiring journey, does all of the exercise convert easily when you flip your hands over again to how you had them at the start of the video?

    Cheers

  • Never thought to practise it going from groups of 3 to 7, cheers for the tip!

  • at 2:50 i dont understand what you mean by "untill you get it" if one is able to do it then they obviously already have "got it"

  • hahaah I practice this in comercials! you stole my idea :( :P 4:14

  • one of the best drumming teachers

  • Swear to god doing single stroke rolls at speed have been pissing me off for so long.

  • @MrChrisdrums i know how you feel

  • you make it look easy but its not

  • @alzalzo1 He already mentioned that it's not easy.

  • Awesome.....has really helped me a lot. Thank you very much Sir!

  • I'm struggling quite a lot with double stroke rolls, will perfecting this help me at them?

  • @iSquishMoths Yes and no, it'll help because developing those reflexes in your fingers is good for doubles, but what you need to is study the 'bounce snap' technique. Hope that helps x

  • Canadians are awesome.

  • honestly one of the best teachers ive come across.

  • you talk to much in every video

  • Men!! look at his face when he is playing the exercises xD it looks like O.= 3:54 -- 4:06

  • @krespito7krespo Concentration... He has it.

  • Comment removed

  • If there's a thing i'm not good in with drumming. It's this. Thanks for the lesson. I'm sure it will help.

  • Could you please tell, which pad are you using, which brand? how did you fix this?

  • Jared, I have found that when I do this exercise, all of my fingers feel like they are being controlled by the stick, but my pinky seems to have a mind of its own, separate from mine, and from the stick's. Do you know what I mean? What's wrong with what I am doing?

  • so many thats what she said moments..

  • sweet.

  • i didnt notice the username and when i saw him was like "HHHHHUUUUUUHHH JARED!!!!!!!!!!" :D

  • 3:39 - You are SO Canadian xD

  • French grip. Learned it in middle school.

  • Dude, you have got some crazy awesome concentration XD

  • this technique is taking me forever to get my hands to even a decent speed. What am i doing wrong?

  • 8 people didnt have the patience ^^

  • jared should play death metal :D he's so scary, he should just freeze and play 260 bpm blast beats

  • Big thanks from girl drummer!

  • Just like guitar, you put the hard work in and it pays off... eventually!

Thanks Jared, its good to see where hours of practise get you when you need a boost!

  • Can you show how to hold stick, I think the way I'm holding it i end up using my thumb to go faster, also do you use pinky? I tend to leave it sticking out.

  • @blvdsoul it is very important to use the pinky my friend

  • great lesson :-D

  • 2:26 Stick it Out, lol...

  • how long will it take me to get it to your fastest speed if i practice everyday? sorry just have to say this. what the falk!

  • I love how you freeze for like 30 seconds at a time. lol

  • i cant get my left hand to go as fast as my right hand

  • Jared how are ya?, i'm right handed but my left hand fingers are quicker than my right hand fingers. my right wrist moves just slightly while my left wrist remains still. how can i get speed in my right hand?

  • is he on tumblr? O_O

  • i like when ur mind is empty and just concentrate on your hand...i like it...!!!...but its really funny when u freeze...!!!

  • I noticed that your thumb slides on the stick when your going fast, do you do that to control the stick?

  • thanx man. started this now.i can tell its really gonna improve my drumming. thanx for the drum lesson man

  • hey Jared, quick question regarding to sticks: do you use Vic Firth, Pro Mark, Vater? 5A, 5B or 5A Extreme?

  • Commercials are not 20 minutes long... come on Jared. COME ON.

  • Jared ROCKS!

  • Finally starting to get the hang of this!

Any tips on how to practice the transition between doubles using two wrist movements and doubles using fingers? It's not smooth at all when I do it...

  • where do you get those practice pads at??

  • @JekyllsMusic you can get them from any music store really

  • You're awesome

  • He's just had lots of practice fingering obviously :L

  • i have that same drum pad!

  • heey thank you man! you know, i've been playing drums for almost 7 years and i'd never used this kind of technique! it's difficult but pretty nice

  • heey thank you man! you know, i've been playing drums for almost 7 years and i'd never used this kind of technique! it's difficult but pretty nice

  • my right hand had a better bounce then my right hand :(

  • @aldoinsomnia Is it possible for a hand to have a better bounce than itself?

  • my right hand had a better bounce then my right hand :(

  • Haha I giggle 'cause I think this is ridiculously hard, but I have never been practicing on it. I will sure get started with it anyway and really appreciating you took your time to make this video so thank you!

  • Jared, could I get a serious injury if a practice a lot this finger technique? How do I warm up a little bit before practicing? Thanks for your answer... :)

  • @enriquez1987 yea u shud be VERY careful. after trying this for only 2 weeks i broke my leg! now i cant play til the cast comes off!!

  • @leftpuman Whatever, you clown...

  • Can you message me or make a video on how exactly you hold your sticks please? I'm just starting out.

  • @halfandhalf02 go check out my videos on proper stick control, if they dont help i will explain it better, or post a new vid showing yuo

  • I really have no idea how to do this. I can't hit it without moving my wrist. Help?

  • @Gravydanger Its not impossible bro it definetly can be done.. Practice practice and some more practice

  • This is how Inferno drums. I MUST LEARN.

  • great video...very informative! good basketball reference!

  • Thanks, something for everyone. I'm a brand new beginner, so thanks for starting out simple...I'll have to graduate onto being faster.

  • 2:22 - STICK it out! HA! Get it?!

  • THis Video helped a lot... I needed something to practice and this exersice is the right for me ;)

  • Badass

  • when he freezes he looks like napoleon dynamite :)

  • The spacing between the notes is so hard for me. Anyone else having that problem? Each hand sounds consistent and fine, but my single stroke roll is just garbage...

  • @miketwo345 i do to

  • great vid! out of interest what practise pad do you have and how have you secured it? is it on a stand and fixed with a screw thread? Its just that i have never seen any like that, mine is just a pad so i have to balance it on my knee or put it on a table which is always just the wrong height so.... thanks

  • GET BACK TO WORK!...

    ...just kidding nice video.

  • Next question

    2) when I practise this finger control, the stick would spin clockwise (right hand position) and the pivot would shift towards the center of the stick. Do the thumb and index finger need to hold tight? But we I hold tight, I could not play relax using the rest of 3 fingers. >_<

  • Nice video! I got 2 questions

    1) your palm is facing side way (look like French grip). But I used to play with the palm facing downwards (march grip). I know it's easier to start using French grip style. But I found it's very difficult to do with palm facing down. Any recommendation?

  • What exactly do you say at 4:07 ?

    "Dat.. Simple as that!" ??

  • i had no idea how to do tthe roll on the practice pad but u tought me thanks man!!!

  • My teacher would like this video! :-)

  • @G31Wr3CcK3De i think that freedrumlesson's page has a lesson on practicing with a pillow, if not, tell me, and i'll put one up!

  • I don't know what kind of commercials this guy watches but I'm glad as hell Ive never seen a 20 minute commercial in my lifetime lolz. (time-4:16)

  • it's sad for me cuz I have baby fingers. basically, I have a small pair of hands. so this technique can never work on me. such a depressing fact....

  • @peanutXify smaller drumsticks?

  • I would love to know about finger technique... it seems as though she wasn't impressed.

  • 4 a beginner lik me, such a lesson is jus awsum!

3:52 - 4:04 this guy is just great lol

  • Thank you. I have been playing drums for longer than you have been alive, ( I am not kidding). My single stroke role has always been a major source of disappointrment to me. Your excercise (and lots of practice) will remedy that. Good job! Once again, thank you:)

  • useful video, thanks

  • you should make another video with the camera pointing to the inside of the fingers and play it back in slow motion so people can see wat you mean about dribbleing it with your fingers.. people like me haha
