Please read some history and grow up, this man is a peasant who had no idea of what he was doing. He got addicted to cameras and the Israelis took advantage of him. Anyways, Sadat had nothing to do with the war. He was forced to give the green light under pressure from the Egyptian army which was planning the war since 1967. Everyone in Egypt knew there was a war coming and was preparing for it. Sadat's third-grade mentality was not involved in anyway in planning the the war.

Nasser did not destroy Egypt's economy. Sadat did. With all due respect, I'm a double economics and finance major. Sadat's infita7 opened the country's economy before it even had the chance to develop its industries (which Nasser built: steel, automotive, etc.). Any economics student who even barely pays attention in class knows of many examples of countries that did that and it turned terribly wrong. China built its industries under Communist rule then opened its economy.

My dear friend, if Nasser had lived any longer, or if he was successeded by some one like him..1- there would never have been any peace treaty in the first place, it would have been one war after another until we were completely destroyed.2- even with the so called growong industry under Nasser, he was throwing away our money supporting ward in Yemen, Algeria and Africa, when his own people couldnt even find the basics..not to mention the torture and political prisons!

Egypt under Nasser started to build its industries. Under Sadat, the economy was opened even before Egypt's industries were competitive enough to compete with the West. Resul is Nasr Automotives is just as crap today as 60 years ago and Egypt has almost no chance of having an automotive industry of its own. Nasser also had plans to develop and arms industry. Sadat was a thief and a traitor. Watch Al Jazeera's "Arab Unity" report.Syria, Jordan and PLO were waiting for Sadat's call to accept peace

Exactly. As Heikal wrote in his biography of Sadat (The Autumn of Fury), Sadat became addicted to the lights of the "Super Star". He loved the cameras and interviews. He was an uneducated peasant and definitely not a statesman or an intellectual.

@AlHakeem55 I suspect the Egyptian government is responsible for the recent promotion of Sadat's image especially at the expense of Nasser's. For example, there's a permanent Sadat exhibition at the Library of Alexandria but none for Nasser. Admiring Sadat is more likely to raise contempt with the current government's policies especially towards Gaza whereas admiring Nasser wouldn't. kifaya eno 7at il 7omar Mubarak as VP so that we ended up with an idiot running the country for the last 30 yrs.

Very true. Sadat's policies including his disastrous (Al-Infita7) were aimed specifically at removing Nasser from the hearts, minds, and lives of Egyptians. Sadly, the current administration in Egypt had no option(in my opinion) except to adopt the essence of Sadat's policies and continue to practice them. I do not blame Hosni Mobarak. Maybe deep down he disagreed everything Sadat stood for but he could not simply reverse what Sadat did or it would have been even more harmful to Egypt.

The alternative was not to agree to the demilitarization of Sinai (not freed if we can't defend it), not to agree that the U.S. would have to be the sole provider of Egypt's weaponry (how will we defend ourselves if Israel attacks), that Israeli products have tariff rights over any other product, that our sell out leader doesn't become the US's and Israel's lackey so that Israel may do whatever it pleases.

And I'm not against the peace treaty per se. I believe that if the Arabs would have "recognized" Israel and accepted the 1948 partition plan, they would have developed their economies and become strong since the entire country's ressources wouldn't be diverted to the Israeli issue. And today Israel would not even exist. What I disagree with are the terms of Sadat's treaty. Camp David is the only time in history where the victor (Egypt) signed a treaty under losing terms.

@zilzal56 about the size of the Army, size doesn't always matter, Israel's population was always much smaller than the other Arab countries and it didn't necessarily affected the quality of the army, this also comes for other countries with small armies (the Soviet Finnish war of 1939-40, the Finns with much smaller but much better army).

Not only did he destroy our economy, but he also weakened our army. The peace treaty with Israel (more like surrender) meant that Egypt's military would now be limited to what the US decides to send us. Obviously this means that we can never be strong enough to threaten Israel (or defend ourselves from it). We are also forbidden from purchasing weapons from any other supplier but the US. Not to mention the obligation that Sinai has to be completely demilitarized.

With it's US weapons, Egypt is the Strongest country in the region with it's army 2nd or equal to Israel's.

By the way, Egypt can't buy weapons since they are buying the weapons with US support money.

Obviously, from an Israeli perspective, I can see how that would be a great a thing...but for an Egyptian such as myself, that's unacceptable. Those US weapons are subject to America's whim...at any time, they could stop the supply of arms. Had Sadat not reverted Nasser's policies, Egypt would have a military industry by now

Unfortunately, a lot of people in Egypt love this guy not realizing just how badly he betrayed Egypt. iftita7 il balad was a huge disaster for Egypt's economy and we're still paying the price today. Despite all his faults, Nasser at least built industries in Egypt so that one day we could be self-reliable and compete with the world. Sadat il khayan opened the economy when our industries were still weak or non-existant (transportation, armament, etc.). No Western capitalist country did that.
