I remember the Tornado ride that used to be in the building where the Canyon Blaster now stands. My youngest son loves this ride because it doesn't go upside down and it's a rollercoaster that he can actually ride - he's too short for the other rollercoasters. I miss the Tornado ride though. I remember when this park used to be Story Town when I was a kid. Remember Wild Windy Bill McKay? I have pictures of him with my kids. Was so sorry to hear about his death.
i thought this was like a kitty ride cause it went slow exept for like 2-3 part but yea O AND WHY THE HELL WAS THE LOG RIDE CLOSED ITS RIGHT NEXT TO THIS ONE HMMMMMMMM
And I've watched both the video of this and from a viewers perspective and I can tell you that they have slowed it down tremendously! When they repainted the coasters that blue red and yellow, the went to alloy wheels where they had been using the original heavy steel wheels. Light weight alloy with a rubber outer coating.
Also the lifts were faster. Just as a gag, we had a policeman friend come to the ride with a portible radar and clocked it at 74mph in the spiral. THAT is what made the difference. A hot day in the 100's, a full coaster of people and that thing would ROAR through that spiral. And that was with skid brakes. I think they converted it to fin brakes now.
I spent some time studying the videos and still pictures and I can see where it would be boring because they only run one coaster on the track. The transfer track is gone as well as all the block brakes. It was pretty noisy with the clatter of the lifts and the way the coasters would slide to a stop on those skid brakes. That was part of the excitement as well. It's a bit benign now. Coming in for the new season after they refurbished it - it was a real eye opener at how fast that thing was
We were used to not even slowing it down until it hit dispatch brake. Once they did the alloy wheels, the first time I got up on panel with a full load in the coaster, I overshot that thing BIG TIME!
Yes this was originally the "Timber Topper" at Opryland (1972) and then changed the name to "Rock N Roller Coaster". I ran the ride for 3 years. Doesn't look like it moves nearly as fast as it did at Opryland. The lift chain doesn't sound as fast. It would really HOWL coming through that spiral. Was a great ride and so much fun to run.
I live in Nashville and used to ride this when I was a kid at Opryland. It looked so huge then, and looks smaller here. It was in the woods when it was at Opryland and yep, it did seem faster then. Glad to see it back up and running even if the name has changed.
That was definitely the key. It was in a patch of woods with all those trees, hence it's original name, "Timber Topper." Doesn't look as dominating without all the trees.
People were actually scared of it! That roaring sound it made through the spiral and all the kids screaming. The lifts were loud. I love that video of the viewers perspective. I sounds just like it did standing at the panel operating the ride. But we ran 2 or 3 coasters on the track. That made a big difference in asthetics. The #1 question was always, "Does this ride go upside down?" No, but just make sure you hold your nose when it goes under water. LOL!
It was the coaster of it's day in the early 70's! Most coasters were wood at that time and few and far between. You have to remember the draw was all those trees. It was nestled in a patch of woods and made the sight lines completely different. The track was also painted a woodsy color so you really didn't see the track, especially at the end with the spiral. It wasn't until you were at the top of high lift that you saw what you were in for.
I can understand that for a younger generation that is used to wilder rides. But this WAS a wild ride in it's day and thousands of Nashvillians feel very very nostalgic about that ride. For most, it was the first time they had ever ridden a major roller coaster. There was a wooden out and back coaster at the fairgrounds in the 60's but only open during the fair. So Timber Topper/Rock N Roller Coaster was the first chance for most to really ride a roller coaster without parental consent.
By far the funniest ride ever. Im glad im a operator there :D
