I read about this in a readers digest "Marvels and mysteries of the seas"- 1977, from my Gran's house. Scariest book I think I have ever read- including this story, and shark attack on ww2 cruiser "Indianapolis".
i know what they did and they did some horrible stuff to the country i come from but still that's really harsh because it was the way they were told and brought up from past mentors... and its war. some did not like the war and didnt want to fight but had to for themselves and whatever family they had, like most soldiers from other countries would.
@SUPERROCKER1970 god had nothing to do with this this is called an act of nature. hungry animals and defenseless humans. we have no hunting tactics aside from guns.
The numbers have been debated over the years, kronlc. Around 1,000 Japanese soldiers retreated into the swamp, but some sources say 500 managed to escape and join another battalion. 20-25 were definitely *captured* by the British. What happened to the rest, well, we'll never know.
oh i read about this in a book. the soldiers were ambushed by hundreds of crocodiles in the middle of the night. the survivors were taken hostage by enemy soldiers
That's the one, FlamingFury. The Japanese soldiers had sworn an oath never to surrender, so the only place they could go was into the heart of the swamp--where hundreds of crocodiles waited.

@kronlc Actually, the writers of Guiness World Book 2006 said only 20 Japanese men survived.

@Falcone45 Most of them would have perished from want of food water and
swamp born diseases, maybe some would have been taken by the crocs but we
will never know.
