  • Regardless, of who, what, when, where and why... Townes always hurts me in the best way imaginable. I always try to be a hard ass. However, anytime I watched him sing I cry and thats ok with me. He's truly the best song writer that has ever lived. Damn it... Why do i got to be so young? I would"ve given my right arm to have seen him live.

  • thumbs up if you have a beer in your hand.

  • just couldn´t be better. thank you. Janne

  • @lapislazuli42 thank you so much for posting these videos. I adore Townes more than air and water. This footage is brilliant. Thank you very much. Xx

  • Thank you for posting this, lapislazuli42.

  • Thanks for sharing hanksinatra- Christmas came to me early thanks to you and you tube! I thought this was a willie nelson song- surprise!! I am the newest TvZ fan!

  • Willie and Bo loyal friends RIP and friends of me RIP. On my death bed I will remember them. May there fields always be green and the sun always shine My heart was broken.

  • LEGEND

  • Thanks, Hank...Great job remembering a great man who I had a chance to see at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY. RIP Friend :(((

  • this song makes me cry

  • Hey there "lapislazuli42",

Thanks to YouTube, I just discovered TVZ less than 2 months ago (and his late friend Blaze Foley, as well). I've since purchased 4 TVZ CD's and 2 of Blaze's. I've watched virtually everything of Townes' posted here. I must thank you for posting the "Private Concert" videos. I feel Townes' singing those 13 songs reflects his most heartfelt performances, his emotional peak. While the bell clarity of his youthful voice had vanished, so to, had the rushed delivery.

  • Anyone know where I can download this whole concert?

  • wonderful video, I love this song

  • Townse Van Zandt is the best pure song writer that ever set foot on earth.

  • I met Townes at the Edmonton Folk Fest in the 90's, we talked for about 20 minutes. He was truely a fine person and his music will last forever. He was the symbol of singer/songwriters everywhere and lived the life to prove it.

A few years ago Steve Earle played at the Edm. Folk Fest and his entire show was dedicated to Townes Van Zandt. It was very touching.

I would love to see Townes' son JTVZ play at the same Fest some day

  • Townes is the number 1 singer-songwriter for me.

His songs always touch me and tears well up easely listenin to his voice wich shouldn't be a good thing but it makes me feel good...

Not a day goes by when I don't listen Townes

  • wow. not sure how I missed it, but I never even heard of him till a couple years ago, but I've been hearing Willie / Merle's version of this for years.

  • Hank,

Thank you for the great memory.

  • They only let him slip away,

    Out of kindness I suppose....

  • People...this is a DVD...I have a copy too,,,It's called "Houston 1988"

  • How can i learn to fingerpick like this??

  • @lotus21 There's alot of tutorials on youtube- just search "Travis picking" here or on the internet. Explains the basics i'm sure.

  • @lotus21 practice

  • @lotus21 practice

  • i don't care if you and townes were good friends. thank you for sharing-- regardless. this is great music.

  • Kind of reminds me of the style of "Mississippi John Hurt" back in his day!

  • I've heard alot of people do this song. Steve Earle, and all these other jokers on youtube, etc. None of them raise the hair on the back of my neck like this. This man is a grand master. The real deal.

  • Everything about this is perfect.

  • Man oh man!

  • Merle and Willie did it wonderfully, but this man CREATED this song from a pencil and paper, and this is the REAL version, and by far the best.

  • ♀♪♪♪◄↕‼‼►1◘◄1♣►♪♥♥♥♥ <<<nuff said.

  • it's so cool to be able to see townes.

  • gets me right here ♥

  • Hank... great work... wish we could have seen all your work

  • i dont know how you got this footage ,but im the guy who filmed it. a law suit by his x family took away any chance i had of using this work, and spoiled a deal with universal music for the dvd and a cd soundtrack. his x's said the quality was not good enough for them. i am glad to see my work on youtube ,but if i put this up i would surely be sued .i hope everyone who sees it enjoys

    hank sinatra

  • @hanksinatra

Really? I thought it was all excellent, Tecumseh Valley in particular

  • Hey Hank, as a longtime Townes fan, i have seen and heard a lot of live stuff, and in my opinion, he was really on his game for this session, the sound, and the feel are great

  • I gotta ask. How did this come about? Is there anyone there besides Townes and you? Just curious

  • hey tbrrrd, harold eggers was there,he worked with townes as his manager. i went to houstin to record townes and others playing a benifit concert for the will sampson foundation . all volunteer

  • @hanksinatra - what an incredible experience that must have been.

  • @hanksinatra

im sure no one wants to see you get sued. that said, i am very jealous of you! personally, these private recordings are some of my favorite versions of his songs. in my opinion townes really shines when he is playing solo. many of his albums are over-produced in my opinion. honestly i could listen to these songs forever. i just wanted to thank you for recording such a special moment in history, and i hope you had fun doing it! sucks about the missed chance to use the footage!

    ww3

  • @hanksinatra I'm curious if you know about the official release of this released by a company called Varese Sarabande in 2004? I bought it from Best Buy in '06. It was sitting right next to the amazing documentary about Townes. No joke. I still have the DVD. The full title of it is Houston 1988: A Private Concert. There's also bonus footage of Barb Donovan and Calvin Russell performing and talking about Townes.

  • @WipersLegend

Weird. I wonder who's getting the roaylty kickbacks?

  • @hanksinatra The DVD is introduced by a Harold F. Eggers, Jr. I forgot to mention that in my previous comment.

  • @hanksinatra

as much as i love townes i gotta say if what you say is true (and i believe you) is family is a bunch of ..

anyway thank the lord for whoever put this up and you too hank for filming.

townes is the best and his family should do the best they can to promote him in every way they can because even if one wants to argue that townes wasn't "the best" it's hard to argue that he wasn't the most underappreciated artist of the modern (post 1965) era. thanks to all who helped get this to me!

  • @hanksinatra I found this concert on DVD in Boise, and I bought it, but a friend stole it from me and I haven't seen him since.

  • @hanksinatra Hi Hank. I definitely enjoy it. Too bad you couldn't release it in a proper way. But at least the masses can still enjoy it.

  • @hanksinatra thank you for you attitude! Sorry the deal went south.

  • @hanksinatra

Townes needs to be heard. sorry you lost out on the capitalization of an artist who never fully cared for anyone of your ??kind??

    wups

  • @hanksinatra thank you immensely for filming this

  • @hanksinatra you are an extremely lucky man, im 16 years old and will never experience anything close to being the presences of someone half of the man townes was. i couldnt't imagine your thoughts while filming this.

  • @13jacksonm it was a great night ,at 3am i recorded blaze first blaze foley and then townes. my thoughts were simple make a great recording even tho i had been working since 10 am. i have been very fortunate to be in the presence of many great songwriters and it always feels good. at your age you have plenty of time to have the same experience with artists of your time.

  • @hanksinatra artist of our time dont amount to townes though, except the people that are still kickin' it like willie and such, but the odds of being in the presence of him for me is very slim.

  • @hanksinatra bullshit

  • @hanksinatra - Thank goodness for YouTube, and Townes, and you! It is different than his other versions, but it's his. It would be a shame if it were to waste away.

  • @hanksinatra

    Call me, buddy. Jonny

  • superb.

    thanks a lot

  • Incredible set of videos...thanks for posting this.

  • Just wonderful. What a great talent, he's sorely missed.

  • willy never managed to performe it as it was supposed to be

  • townes in on the same level of song writing ability as john lennon or bob dylan. Each write their own way but all are masters of their domain.

  • very true

  • @jabee001 funny the names you claim here, Van Zandt himself mentioned a famous Nashville artist who said he would stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say TVZ is the best folk singer ever. TVZ said he's met Bob and been to his house, Bob has some big dangerous looking security guards and he don't think anyone is gonna stand on his coffee table to say anything.

  • @ganyawee The artist who said that was Steve Earle. A Texas artist and a huge admirer and basically apprentice of Townes. Steve describes Townes like an older brother. Any who they toured on the same circuit when they were first trying to make it. But again, Dylan, Lennon and Van Zandt all stand on different platforms, one shouldn't be compared to another.

  • He was not of this Earth, he was that good.

  • I love TVZ. One of the all time best.

  • Wasn't he something else. Pity he's gone. Great song, part of a great musical legacy.

  • Wow, there's no better than Townes with just a voice and guitar.

  • There are so many people out there in music. They think they are so talented. But the true test of talent is if they can sit down and play a good song with just a guitar, or piano. Once you can do this...you're good.

  • It's amazing indeed. I can listen these songs time and time again, thanks for uploading!

  • these are all amazing, thanks for uploading them! just townes and his guitar, that's when he sounds his best

  • WOW!
