Regardless, of who, what, when, where and why... Townes always hurts me in the best way imaginable. I always try to be a hard ass. However, anytime I watched him sing I cry and thats ok with me. He's truly the best song writer that has ever lived. Damn it... Why do i got to be so young? I would"ve given my right arm to have seen him live.
Thanks for sharing hanksinatra- Christmas came to me early thanks to you and you tube! I thought this was a willie nelson song- surprise!! I am the newest TvZ fan!
Willie and Bo loyal friends RIP and friends of me RIP. On my death bed I will remember them. May there fields always be green and the sun always shine My heart was broken.
Thanks to YouTube, I just discovered TVZ less than 2 months ago (and his late friend Blaze Foley, as well). I've since purchased 4 TVZ CD's and 2 of Blaze's. I've watched virtually everything of Townes' posted here. I must thank you for posting the "Private Concert" videos. I feel Townes' singing those 13 songs reflects his most heartfelt performances, his emotional peak. While the bell clarity of his youthful voice had vanished, so to, had the rushed delivery.
I met Townes at the Edmonton Folk Fest in the 90's, we talked for about 20 minutes. He was truely a fine person and his music will last forever. He was the symbol of singer/songwriters everywhere and lived the life to prove it.
A few years ago Steve Earle played at the Edm. Folk Fest and his entire show was dedicated to Townes Van Zandt. It was very touching.
I would love to see Townes' son JTVZ play at the same Fest some day
wow. not sure how I missed it, but I never even heard of him till a couple years ago, but I've been hearing Willie / Merle's version of this for years.
I've heard alot of people do this song. Steve Earle, and all these other jokers on youtube, etc. None of them raise the hair on the back of my neck like this. This man is a grand master. The real deal.
i dont know how you got this footage ,but im the guy who filmed it. a law suit by his x family took away any chance i had of using this work, and spoiled a deal with universal music for the dvd and a cd soundtrack. his x's said the quality was not good enough for them. i am glad to see my work on youtube ,but if i put this up i would surely be sued .i hope everyone who sees it enjoys
Hey Hank, as a longtime Townes fan, i have seen and heard a lot of live stuff, and in my opinion, he was really on his game for this session, the sound, and the feel are great
hey tbrrrd, harold eggers was there,he worked with townes as his manager. i went to houstin to record townes and others playing a benifit concert for the will sampson foundation . all volunteer
im sure no one wants to see you get sued. that said, i am very jealous of you! personally, these private recordings are some of my favorite versions of his songs. in my opinion townes really shines when he is playing solo. many of his albums are over-produced in my opinion. honestly i could listen to these songs forever. i just wanted to thank you for recording such a special moment in history, and i hope you had fun doing it! sucks about the missed chance to use the footage!
@hanksinatra I'm curious if you know about the official release of this released by a company called Varese Sarabande in 2004? I bought it from Best Buy in '06. It was sitting right next to the amazing documentary about Townes. No joke. I still have the DVD. The full title of it is Houston 1988: A Private Concert. There's also bonus footage of Barb Donovan and Calvin Russell performing and talking about Townes.
as much as i love townes i gotta say if what you say is true (and i believe you) is family is a bunch of ..
anyway thank the lord for whoever put this up and you too hank for filming.
townes is the best and his family should do the best they can to promote him in every way they can because even if one wants to argue that townes wasn't "the best" it's hard to argue that he wasn't the most underappreciated artist of the modern (post 1965) era. thanks to all who helped get this to me!
@hanksinatra you are an extremely lucky man, im 16 years old and will never experience anything close to being the presences of someone half of the man townes was. i couldnt't imagine your thoughts while filming this.
@13jacksonm it was a great night ,at 3am i recorded blaze first blaze foley and then townes. my thoughts were simple make a great recording even tho i had been working since 10 am. i have been very fortunate to be in the presence of many great songwriters and it always feels good. at your age you have plenty of time to have the same experience with artists of your time.
@hanksinatra artist of our time dont amount to townes though, except the people that are still kickin' it like willie and such, but the odds of being in the presence of him for me is very slim.
@hanksinatra - Thank goodness for YouTube, and Townes, and you! It is different than his other versions, but it's his. It would be a shame if it were to waste away.
@jabee001 funny the names you claim here, Van Zandt himself mentioned a famous Nashville artist who said he would stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say TVZ is the best folk singer ever. TVZ said he's met Bob and been to his house, Bob has some big dangerous looking security guards and he don't think anyone is gonna stand on his coffee table to say anything.
@ganyawee The artist who said that was Steve Earle. A Texas artist and a huge admirer and basically apprentice of Townes. Steve describes Townes like an older brother. Any who they toured on the same circuit when they were first trying to make it. But again, Dylan, Lennon and Van Zandt all stand on different platforms, one shouldn't be compared to another.
There are so many people out there in music. They think they are so talented. But the true test of talent is if they can sit down and play a good song with just a guitar, or piano. Once you can do this...you're good.
