It's a single action (SA) revolver which means the trigger only fires the gun. Ex., 1911's.

A double action (DA) gun will cock the hammer and release it. Ex. Beretta 92FS's.

A DA/SA gun will first cock the hammer and fire, then will already be cocked by the slide recoiling, or some other method. Ex. some USP models. (USP's can be configured for quite a few.)

Double Action Only is the trigger always cocking the hammer and then firing. DAO pistols usually cannot be cocked by hand, Ex. snub guns

Its an advantage of the hammer version of the 38. I have a hammerless version which is great for concealed carry because there is not hammer to get hung up on cloths but you do loose a little in accuracy.

.38 Special revolvers come in all shapes and sizes, Anywhere from a 2 inch barrel to 8 inches. frames, can be detective special size(smaller than J frame or just about) to N Frame size.

What it looks like he has is a S&W Model 10, Model 15. 4 in. non heavy barrel or the mentioned Colt Official Police model. Neither are large guns, but are in .38 Special and hold 6 rounds.

No handgun of any caliber can be guaranteed to knock anyone down to the ground in one shot. Can it kill with one shot? If you do your job, place your shots where needed, round will do it's job. Size helps, but not important, even a .22 placed properly and with the right loads can kill quite easily.

A .357 has much more kick to it because of the added black powder. Higher pressure, more force.

Just because it's a slightly smaller bullet doesn't make it weaker. I made that mistake when I tried out a .357 Magnum without thinking it was actually one of the more powerful loads.

And I think chris was thinking of a .380 ACP. Most people think that should be the minimum calibre for protection since it is weaker than the 9mm

Well thank you for the lesson. I carry a Smith and Wesson model 638, 5 shot revolver. It is a concealed carry revolver, and carried by various police agencies for undercover work. I fire the +P rounds, and the weapon can hurt the hand of an untrained user. Louder than a 12 gauge shotgun...no shit.

On the 9mm, the diameter is more or less equal, but the powder produces more power at the expense of lighter bullets. The heaviest weight 9mm I've heard of is 147 grains. A .38 however, can fire heavier weight bullets up to 180 grains, especially with +P loads. One could do worse than a .38. For most people, .38 Special is the minimum caliber that is suitable for defense.

9mm is a bit smaller than the 38. The 38 is the same size in circumference as a 357 Mag. You can shoot 38s in a 357, but you can't shoot 357s in a 38. The 357 is the same size around but longer. Too long for the 38's cylinders.

I've been hit with a .38 Special before, under the left arm and out the back. You can hardly see the bullet wounds now, cause it happened like in '90. I'm just glad it wasn't a hollow point that hit me.
