I've had this camera for 3 years now, Its a wonderful starter camera. Quite noisy when taking a picture. But if you're scared about the 3.5 frames per second not being good enough, i've gotten great action shots with this camera. Great camera for beginners. And i'm selling it on craigslist right now (:
WTF? This "perfect for beginners" shit really annoys me. It wasn't long ago the "pro level" cameras had shitty 6mp sensors and maxed out at 400 ISO. Make no mistake, the 450d and any subsequent Rebel camera will be capable of professional results. Just ad glass and talent.
@djcondra agreed. I hate it when they label "pro" or "consumer" level on these cameras when it should really be applied to the user behind the camera.
@djcondra I guess it's "perfect for beginners" because of the cheap (for a DSLR) price. It's just pricing IMO, but obviously talent and good glass is just the key for a good photo.
I dont understand the zoom thing. What is the zoom on this? I have a nikon l110 coolpix.. and it says its 15x zoom.. but he's talkin about mm etc and im lost Lol. Can someone tell me what the zoom is on this? or how you find out the zoom on any camera?
@steffie37106 The 15x thing is for a point and shoot camera. For a digital slr on the other hand, its the strength of the lens which is measured in mm which is the focal distance of the atttached lens. Infact the camera itself cant zoom anything in the case of a dslr, its the attached lens.
@ajaybirchahal Ok thanks very much for explaining.. i think i get it now.. So the higher up the mm on the lens, the bigger the zoom? Is that right?lol.
Umm soon i will be posting a video on my channel because my dad found a professional camera in his taxi and it say's rebel xti soo then i looked it up and it looks similar to this one!!!! if its not please tell what it is!!!! by the way does this make videos???? because that's the main reason i want to use it for!!!!
I honestly do not understand the concept of liveview on a DSLR. IMO, the biggest pro of a DSLR is the isolation that the viewfinder offers you so can focus exclusively on your shot. Having liveview just completely kills that isolation.
i actually find the concept to b quite ingenious. I feel a lot of people get a DSLR w/o liveview and feel obligated to purchase a crap point and shoot. Now, you can choose how u want to take your pictures, whether it's for the detail of one particular target or a simple group photo or w/e.
I guess people all have their different priorities :) I had a P&S before getting a DSLR, and in the end I ended up selling my P&S simply because I never used it after I got used to my XTi.
The XSi is a higher tier camera than the XS, so if you can afford it, go XSi.
Keep in mind though that if you're just looking at entry level cameras, both Nikon and Canon will be great, the only difference being lens mounts and grips. Both offer very similar performance.
Because of that, I highly recommend you go to a camera store and physically hold both cameras from both Nikon and Canon, and simply go with the company that offers you a more comfortable grip.
Well, like my comment said, both cameras are entry-level cameras, so they're more or less the same functionally. Therefore, the only factor that should sway you into buying one way or another is the body itself, so you should try holding both bodies before deciding :)
Nikon and Canon both have extremely extensive lens choices, and both are very popular companies. You can't go wrong either way.
i dont know which one will give me what i want. im into micro, people, city-scapes, action, artsy, and nature shots. well pretty much i take pics of anything lol.
You'll like the Canon more. The lens and accessory selection for Nikon is nothing compared to Canon. As far as the XS goes, I'd recommend the XSi. For a couple hundred more bucks, you get a great all around sub $1k camera. As far as the kind of shots you do, you pretty much described every field of photography, albeit general. Canon's lenses and the third-party counterparts that fit the EF/EF-S mount will give you good price/performance. Get an XS if you just want basic, but I'd still say XSi.
i'm thinking about the sam question but i am thinking more and more the xsi cuz you know how there is always something new and 12.2 megapixel is alot ...for a couple of years
I just bought this camera at Walmart last night. They apparently aren't stocking it anymore and had reduced the price to $333. USD! I was gob smacked since it was originally over $700.
i think the rebel is the american version with lesser things on the cam.
the eos 450d is the version for europe and japan and so. thats expensiver that the rebel xsi because the american model has lesser things.. i dont know so good. xD
I've owned 5 Canon cameras since the late 70's. Each one has been flawless in workmanship and ease of use. I just bought the XSi 12MP this week after trying a 2007 8MP XT on a loan from a friend. The XSi really compensates for my stupidity and gives me pictures that I can't believe I even took. As I get more used to it, and the technology it comes with, I hope to be on top of my photography game before too long.
Would you recommend this camera to a beginner getting into photography?
Note I'm looking for a professional grade camera that can take great sharp quality pictures,I'm not a professional but I enjoy the art and would like to get started,I'm looking to take serious creative images what would you recomend?
Yes, I have this camera and it is a very good learning camera for beginners, such as myself. It takes sharp, crisp pictures with much ease. I am still learning from it, and I have had it for a while. If you are looking to take a different path, you could also go for the Nikon D60, which is another entry-level DSLR camera and it is very similar to the EOS Rebel Xsi.
Thank you for the reponse,I have another question, are all canon lense compatiable with this camera? I'm really looking to take close up pictures so Im guessing I'd need a good macro lense,do you know of any that fit perfectly with this camera ?
Im pretty sure that all of the Cannon lenses are compatible with this camera but i am not certain. I have a telephoto lens from Tamron which fits and works perfectly. I think that you could use some other Tamron lenses with this camera as well
Well financial wise I'm willing to drop 800 to 900 and maybe 1000 if I have too and thats only for a body,As for the lens Im willing to spend up too 500 for a quality piece of glass thats pretty much my budget...what do you think of the Nikon D5000 ?I've been leaning towards buying it..
honestly you don;t that video.YES great to have but not needed if your in it for photography... i would buy the one in this video body only or the XTi..the XTi is abouy 600 Body only and a GREAT camera to begin with and the rest of the money buy a Great lens instead of a 500 dollar lens Trust me Lens Makes a Huge Difference a Canon 24-105L IS USM on the Xti Would be a Great Deal Trust me... and you might have money left for a Flash or other accessories...Message me for any other questions...
I own one of these, and seem to be in the same position as you. I highly recommend it, is a fantastic camera with amazing photos of high quality, and with the internet you can get most of your questions answered. Good luck!
I would like to point out that it is not true that you have to multiply 18-55 by 1.6 to find the actual mm of the lens because it is an EF-S lens which compensates for the crop sensor
I just got that camera. I cant find anything wrong with it yet. Takes some great shots. Even if your just messing around taking random pics, they will come out great. Battery life is excellent. I never use the live view, cause i find it hard to get depth in pictures. If your looking to get one, get it.
New technology has enabled SLR users to use the LCD screen when taking shots.. This is called live view. It was always viewfinder and i guess still is the best way to take a shot.
OMGitzKathayy, live view is where the image is shown on the LCD. It is the same shot that you see through the View-finder, however, it is on the LCD instead. so if you are in a tight spot and can't look through the view-finder, you can still see the image that you will get.
I'm in the same situation as you. I went to talk to a professional photographer and he said to get the Rebel. He's kina weary of Sony 'cause they're new. What did you get?
Why does allways things have different names in the US? why call it REBEL XSI, dont u americans understand EOS 450D? Is it too long? And look at that box, it looks stupid.
I know what you mean. I hate Canon's naming scheme for North America. They only change the name for their lower end dslr's, how about the pro camera's? Why not change them all to letters so they're in unison? It's stupid. I much rather have 450D than xsi written on my camera.
I had the Rebel xti and took it to a store to have it repair, They lost my camera on the way and they gave me the New Canon rebel Xsi.. as a replacement and love it like crazy. my husband had bought it for him but I dont let him touch it..lol recomend this camera in a heartbeat.
Well how about this. You go on Google and on here and you find me one and we can sit here and compare the stats all day. Think about ISO performance is dark light conditions, RAW shooting for processing, and most importantly rate of continous shooting. When all those stats match or exceed then i'll be convienced.
lol Do you even know what "ignorant" means? HP aren't "the best", as you claim. If they were the best, people would be dropping their Canons, Nikons, and Sonys for an HP camera. You're the ignorant one.
There are only TWO digital SLR systems that can take video at the moment: The Nikon D90 and the Canon 5D Mark II. Both of these are mid-range DSLRs. The Nikon is roughly $1,000 (body only) and the Canon is $2,700 (body only).
we'll Logan himself is a photographer... so, it's suits him well to review this... and yes I agree with his review... I bought this camera last year and It's really a good camera for aspiring photographers!
It is a beginner slr. Plain and simple. It doesn't mean it's not a great camera, I own one and love it. Basically all crop frame slr's are considered beginner, or start up slr's.
highlight tone priorety, live view, 3.0 inch screen and a 12.2 mp sensor are hardly beginner features imo. yes, crop factor is an issue for some, but since I shoot mostly sports, its a blessing more than a curse.
Features are just features. You don't really need them even though they come in handy. But I don't understand why you are arguing. I have the camera and love it. I'm also not saying you have to be a beginner to use it. I'm just stating that it was intended to be sold to people just starting up because of the nice features and affordable price.
this guy is such a huge tool.... "they named it after me" suuuuure they did douchebag. The camera is great but tigerdirect is stupid for letting this idiot do their reviews.

HP Point & Shoot vs. any D-Slr makes me slightly chuckle.

ooh yeah... i have a 6 mp sanyo... a high end p and s that's 4 mp beats it easily.....
Eagle1337 2 years ago
Well how about this. You go on Google and on here and you find me one and we can sit here and compare the stats all day. Think about ISO performance is dark light conditions, RAW shooting for processing, and most importantly rate of continous shooting. When all those stats match or exceed then i'll be convienced.
derek1540 2 years ago
i'm just saying point and shoots sucks especially sanyos.

U IGNORANT! hp is the best!
xzqwer1234 2 years ago
lol Do you even know what "ignorant" means? HP aren't "the best", as you claim. If they were the best, people would be dropping their Canons, Nikons, and Sonys for an HP camera. You're the ignorant one.

I did see the comment before me about the Nikon D60, but what would be better overall?
What I mean is like everything, not just what lens you can get for the camera.
Plz respond back to this quickly, I need it, I'm getting either this or a D60 in a week or even tommorow, so plz respond quickly.
Thanks

I'm looking for something like this, except that it can take video...any suggestions?
Jedum 3 years ago
There are only TWO digital SLR systems that can take video at the moment: The Nikon D90 and the Canon 5D Mark II. Both of these are mid-range DSLRs. The Nikon is roughly $1,000 (body only) and the Canon is $2,700 (body only).

This is probably one of the best reviews I've seen for the XSi. He's thorough, shows sample pics and explains the lenses.

we'll Logan himself is a photographer... so, it's suits him well to review this... and yes I agree with his review... I bought this camera last year and It's really a good camera for aspiring photographers!

Compared to the d700 and 1d it is a beginner. He's not saying everyone that uses it is a beginner but it's classified as one.
austinindie 3 years ago 4
no, its not a beginner camera, because its better than most or all even "beginner" cameras
2pacbiggie4334 3 years ago
It is a beginner slr. Plain and simple. It doesn't mean it's not a great camera, I own one and love it. Basically all crop frame slr's are considered beginner, or start up slr's.
austinindie 3 years ago
highlight tone priorety, live view, 3.0 inch screen and a 12.2 mp sensor are hardly beginner features imo. yes, crop factor is an issue for some, but since I shoot mostly sports, its a blessing more than a curse.
2pacbiggie4334 3 years ago
Features are just features. You don't really need them even though they come in handy. But I don't understand why you are arguing. I have the camera and love it. I'm also not saying you have to be a beginner to use it. I'm just stating that it was intended to be sold to people just starting up because of the nice features and affordable price.
austinindie 3 years ago
what im saying is its in between the realm of beginner-advanced. its almost the perfect intermediate level camera. thats what im saying
2pacbiggie4334 3 years ago
This Camera is good for beginners, but can also easily be used for semiprofessional photography.
