This is the knot I've used for years -- thought I was tying a "Pratt," not realizing it is actually a "Nicky" knot. Personally, my favorite. The "ideal" knot:
I'm looking for the tie knot, which makes the knot actually stand a little bit forward. It's most common used on three-piece suit. Anyone knows which one it is?
Question: I've used the pratt for years (small knot better fit for my narrow collar shirts and also imho less showy/formal so its suited daily use, while still being symmetric), but I happened to stumble upon this video. You mention that the nicky is related to the pratt, and the tying method is very similar. I was wondering what the differences would be in the size and looks? I can't really tell. Thanks
It's not a Half Windsor. But you have a point, It is very close. It has one less move than the Half Windsor because I am tying it inverted (with the seam showing in the beginning). It looks just like the Half Windsor, but is slightly smaller.
Who came up with these names? I gotta teach my kids about the birds and the bees, why grown people work, and the dozens of ways to tie a tie.....YouTube please be here in 15 years!!!
The "Pratt" is a medium sized symmetric knot. The others are either larger, smaller or/and asymmetrical. There really is a big difference. The thing to do is to find four, five of your favorite ties, and try the different knots on each of them to see which knot suits. Some ties are thick, some thin, some wide and so on. Also the collar is important. A wide collar should have the large "Windsor" knot. A narrow collar should have the smaller and elongated "Pratt" knot. Good luck! :-)

Rofl. Amazing how many people call any random knot a half-windsor, even though they don't look like Windsor knots at all!
Great videos :)

- easy to tie,
- perfect size (medium) knot,
- great shape and symmetry,
- self-releasing.

The top part of the Pratt knot is slightly wider than the Nicky.

What build or look is the nicky knot best used for?

One of my favorites! Personally, I think its the easiest out of all of them, and one of the best ones too.

I cant self release this one, is it suppose to be like that?
95ellington 3 years ago
Yes.
avvi66 3 years ago
What is meant by "self release"?
Ooberskidd 3 years ago
when you pull the narrow end out, the broad end does not tie into a knot and self releases into a complete tie again.

I'm trying to find a knot that makes almost a perfect \/ shape at the knott.
My 8th grade teacher showed me quite some time ago, yet i forgot...
Any help?

Your'e probably thinking of the Windsor knot. The St. Andrew knot has also a nice "V" shape, but more narrow than the Windsor.

wuts the difference between this one and all the others? they look exactly the same to me...
