Someone asked, "What is the opposite of narcissism?" In a dysfunctional sense, it is "codependency" or being an enabler/rescuer due to love hunger. This kind of person is the preferred victim of the extreme narcissist who is a predator with these types.
What do you call it when someone has the opposite of Narcissism? Like if someone doesn't feel like they ever deserve anything and doesn't care about themselves or their own well being except through other people they care about? Like if I only cared about myself because my girlfriend cared, and the reason I cared was mostly because I cared about her and how she would feel, not really about myself?
Yes I agree with all you say. I would modify your definition of "a little bit" though. It isn't a little bit of self respect. I prefer to say that without a little bit of Narcissistic defence in our personality, the world out there will eat you alive.
I enjoyed your video... Please check out mine when you get a chance. Knowledge is indeed power. I'm glad you're spreading the word about these type of problems.
Do you realize that psychiatrists and in fact most Americans, are "extreme narcissists" according to your definition? Naturally, all or most of them never see through their self-serving bias projections due to a social psychology phenomenon known as "social proof." They have a lot of other brainwashed robots "validating" their perceptions and feeding their collective ego. It goes without saying that most people are not geniuses, including most "doctors."
My best friend married what I believe to be a major narcissist. Every time I talk to him he bosses me around. Telling me what to do in my life and if I do not agree with him, I am so wrong. Once he talked for hours straight telling me how me being a devout Catholic was wrong, I should stop going to church, and just read the Bible. Just like him.
You have given an excellent description of my soon-to-be ex-husband. Although I have done much research on npd, you have further confirmed what I already know. I now know with absolute certainty that he is an extreme narcissist. Now if only there were a way to cure him of it before our divorce finalized, especially given that we have a very young daughter together. Well thank you for sharing your expertise Dr. Sam.
I do believe extreme narcissists can be cured... but they have to want to. They have to come to the realization that they desperately need help. This is very hard for them since they already believe they are omnipotent. They have to give up on their belief they are God. That is the first step towards healing! The rest is dealing with the emotional deficits and traumas from their past. I do phone and Skype sessions just in case.
so hard to believe that a narcissist can also be an insecure person. but it's true

Good one coomadoug...thanks for sending
But I have one question at point 45 seconds
How can a little bit of narcissism be deemed self respect? Narcissism is essentially self denial, avoidance, hate. How can this be self respect?
