The couple were idiots! Didn't take basic steps to find help on day 1. Just assumed someone would find them until it was too late, 9 days later. And needless to say driving 6 hours solid was a stupid idea in the first place. RIP
guys, it was a freak accident. the sign was unable to be seen and since they were stuck he went out to find a cabin to save his family, and froze to death. hes not an idiot he risked his life for his family, hes far braver, smarter and loyal than all of u haters.
@ShimmerStar98 Actually they didn't even have a sign at the fork in the road. There was a gate blocking that dangerous road off but vandals broke the lock and left the gate wide open. I agree. He waited in the car with his family for 9 or 10 days before he finally realized he has to find help. He risked his life to save his family.
I feel for the family and their ordeal. I wish James had a Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) transceiver with him. They are small, and can fit in a briefcase, including a small wire antenna you can throw over a tree branch. He would have been able to transmit and summon help for sure. Wish I could turn the clock back and give him MY radio.
James Kim died as a hero trying to save his family. RIP.
For anyone else with a family who travels in winter, or in mountains, consider getting a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). About the size of a deck of cards, it will sit in your glovebox for 11 years on a single battery, and when you activate it, will transmit your exact GPS coordinates to NOAA, and they will notify the closest local SAR authorities with your position. 600 bucks. Google "Personal Locator Beacon".
RIP James Kim, you were a brilliant, caring dude that was just trying to help others learn about technology.
Sorry you died in such a horrible manner. At least your beautiful wife and kids are still alive and they will miss you I'm sure though one day you will all be reunited, kk? :) See you soon James!
OnStar is cellphone based and would not have helped in this situation. A nasty little sidenote OnStar does not advertise. Having said that, I still support installing telematics on more vehicles.
It seems either FreakCitySF is joking, or is the Devil. Recall James DID stay with the car for a whole week! After nobody came, he did what any of us will do, look for help. I wish FreakCitySF was in front of me right now.
I will reiterate, posthumously James Kim has made the case for every car having GPS and full mapping systems. Not to mention Satellite connection to some help center... like On Star.
