you are right in some respects. the airframe is clearly stamped by macdonald douglas tho which is american. It is classified as BAe now as they do all the upgrades.Now done in HMF hangar at RAF cottesmore. the Brits did make the first vstol jet, think it was called kestrel but the yanks actually made what we know as the harrier now. we bought it and fitted all our equipment to it. that was my point earlier. rightly this is our gr7 here but still the point is the jet is technically american.
yup just got back from the hangar and looked in an open nose cone and our gr7 gr7a and our new gr9s are clearly marked as macdonall douglas grmk5's (obviously mk5's as same airframe, just new components, engine etc)

The Genuius of the Harrier is the Engine design and the puffer control system which is all British. Its basically a British plane that has had American Money thrown at it to make it what it is today.
