  • When you turn the filter amount (cutoff) it sounds quite stepped. I heard it stepped on a different video demo. Anyway, maybe something wrong with my ears, this should be smooth.

  • Wonder if you could monkey rig that with a guitar.

  • great self oscillation

  • nice tune with a really great patch you got there around 0:38 !!

  • 0.40 Sweet patch mate - You've made my mind up im going to get one of these bad boys!

  • @hooligram Yeah, the 0:40 sound is really great, with the delay applied... really great...

  • Au moins, voila un bon test, on sait ce que l'appareil a dans le ventre, c'est sympa. Bien joué

  • delicious sounds

  • im saving for one £350 what a steal

  • That sent shivers down my spine

  • Judging by this vid this is one of the nicest sounding modern analogue synths I've heard, I'm tempted especially if theres a special deal on it growl

  • definitely hear my Matrix-1000 here...but in mono! (i wish the matrix had a dedicated mono mode..and a less glitchy midi buffer!)

  • Wonderful sounds with your dark energy Leads eye love it

  • Sorry if this is a stupid question - but how do you make that resonance follow your notes? Isn't the res just amplifying the cut off freq? It sounds insane! Have watched (listened) to this video over a hundred times at least :D

  • @ssssn The Dark Energy's VCF section has a switch that activates "key tracking" at either 0%, 50% or 100%.

  • @Longuncattr Aye I kind of figured it out as well, but I'm still not sure what the relation is between the notes and the cutoff freq. Do you? I tried this on a soft synth and with the notes I used it only sounded good when I put the cutoff at 1.1 KHz. I understand the basics of keyboard tracking but I'm wondering how it's calculated or whatever... I tried googling without succes :<

  • @ssssn I don't know any more about it than you, sorry.

  • Makes me wanna travel space & smoke a fattie.

  • the sweet reverb... what device is it?

  • Thank you for this cool demo! At last some musically meaningful material aside from all the uninspired noodling in the other videos :)

  • this video got me inspired to use my dark energy again - i've not looked into it enough :( thanks!

  • WOW, that's a killer resonant lead at 0:33! Love it.

  • @raistaparta : If you dig that type of sound, I'd suggest that you have a look at the Roland SH-1000.

  • My favorite part was from 00:36 - 00:47 :)

  • well done! nice vid ;)

  • im really twisting my head around buying this thing, or buying the mopho, the only concern I have is I can't figure out how many VCO"s this thing has, it is possible to run 2 waveforms at the same time or not?

  • @koekhapper:

DE has exactly one VCO. (Actually DE is ONE VOICE for polyphonic synthesizer) Waveform Switch selects point on the circuit where oscillation is being passed to next modules. You can also get some cute modulations with PWM, VCF LFM etc.

  • @koekhapper me too actually

  • anyone else overly obsessing for this thing?

  • Can you get sub bass hip-hop style with this?

  • @Popoldabboy I don't know what "sub bass hip-hop style " is but yes the DE can deliver very profound sub bass. I use it very often to create low end basslines with mainly pure sinewave.

  • @Popoldabboy: Usually good lead instrument is also good bass instrument. Both instrument type requires fatness. I can't call DE's envelope generator too great, but it can make short attack and punch.

  • It's sounds great dude! A little beat 80's Moroder style but I like it!

  • is this a better value than the dsi mopho?

  • @krakatoa47 yes. all dsi products are DCO's (digitaly contriolled ocilatiors) this has VCO's (voltage controlled ocilators) also you will probably rip your hair out trying to program the mopho

  • Nice. Reminds me of the classic Moog which has always been a favorite of mine. This thing sounds beautiful, thick and rich you can almost taste the sound.

  • The highlights of this video were the low end sounds - lol!!!

  • @fimpson:

I'm quite confused. Where did you seen the low end?

  • @rpocc

it's quite low-frequency from 0:18 to 0:27 or so, and at 0:38 to 0:57 there's a nice bass underneath everything that comes back in at 1:14 for a little as well.

  • @rpocc he might have meant the 0:40 sound, which is played in the low notes...

  • @qishmish:

  • @qishmish:

Добавлю: у меня в сегодняшнем видео партия играется всего-лишь одной рукой на клавиутары, но машина позволила нарастть вокруг мотива сложные текстуры, или если угодно, фигурации. Мне кажется, уже похоже на произведение.

  • This or the Slim Phatty??? Help me out!

  • @aw5omeFRAZA BOTH!

  • i agree with bluelzzzs, this is by far the best demo for dark energy. But i have two questions which i hope you can provide an answer for.I am ordering a virus ti2 and im wondering if dark energy would be compatible with a virus ti2 and if so would dark energy sound good with the virus ti2?

  • @TheBusinessisgood :

I didn't work with so many modules and ican't say how good some module sounds with other module.

Virus is digital modeling instrument. So you can use one of these modules as the effect processor for other one. Also you can use it as any other MIDI modules with DAW or keyboard.

  • Thanks to this demo, i sold my Mopho to buy a DE.

    I just don't regret it.

  • is this synth better then say a roland sh-09? thanks. i'm deciding...:)

  • @009relic1. You should get Roland SH-2, it is same sh09 but with 2 oscilators, much better than sh09 and better than Dark Energy. Roland SH-2 is one of the best bass synth in history.

  • would you take this over a roland SH-09? thanks for your advice.

  • absolutely love 0:38 to 0:48 chills down my spine CRYSTAL CASTLES MUCH? gawd these things are gorgous. in sound and looks as well

  • Especially love 0:30 to 0:40. I just got one of these and I'm going to have to copy your setting as best I can to get this tone. Nicely done, and nice melodic lines. Brilliant--well done!

  • @JeffHallPlaysFenders:

    Thanks for your response!

  • Absolutely fantastic sounding :)

  • Absolutely brilliant !

    All the Best

    Synth-Project

  • Nice indeed, did you set the filter kboard traking to 100% ?

    Sounds great.

  • @javiceres :

Yeah, it is moogly 1v/oct cutoff tracking.

  • @rpocc Sweet result -_^

  • what have you patched to the external audio?

  • @RobotAndTheDEAMON Ж

    On this clip - nothing.

  • Man, this Doepfer is dope!

  • how would it sound with digital delay? (that one in roland sp 404 for example) ?

  • WOW great sounds!!!! very fat.

  • Hello Is it possible for me to use with my bass, if i get adaptors for the input?>?>?

  • @craigwoodify

Yep, you can but ith some limitations. See other comments for additional info.

  • Sounds IMPRESSIVE

  • looking for a small synth to add to my live setup, i would connect it to a ribbon controler (the doepfer one) for some theremin-type leads... even without a glide control is it possible to obtain nice glissando leads?

  • @mynmyself:

there should be no problem. In fact, ribbon bar is large slider potentiometer and it gives continuous impedance. Internal control circuit converts low output voltages to 1v/oct scale, eliminates possible non-linearity and finally produces normal CV output. There's no source of quantization on this link.

Of course, you can hammer-on new note or slide to it like on fret.

Later you can purchase Doepfer Theremin controller for A-100 and get authentic feeling.

  • 0:30 - 0:45 is fucking unreal.. would love to hear the full song if there s one with that synth

  • @MCDEVVOMAN

oh my lord i know . . that is the best part. is there a track that uses this part? after hearing this part in the video i have decided i am getting one of these for christmas, !!!!! i am so grateful to have the most awesome parents in the world who would love to help me out with one of these. can't wait to get one and learn the ins and outs of it :) thank you man

  • Vermona lancet

  • aWESOME SOUND AT 36-48s

  • awesome sound. Dying to by one.

  • Thanks for posting this! Your video, along with a couple of others on youtube, convinced me to buy a DARK ENERGY and I'm really enjoying making music with it! Thank you and good luck with your music!

  • Man this is great ! Is that old ? Can i buy one ? If how much ?

  • @merlinchanelle:

Take a look at doepfer.de, Google. It is new gear available for purchase.

  • @merlinchanelle musicstore.de

  • Sounds pretty sweet mannn, as I am new to this sorta instrument I'm just wondering what would be a better buy, the Dark Energy and a Midi Keyboard or something like a MicroKorg??

    Thanks a lot!!!!!

  • @ChrisMaybeNextTime:

It completely depends on the way you're going to use such kind of instrument. Dark energy is either effect or lead or bass synthesizer for minimalistic, vintage or deep electronic sound. It may fit when you need to control every property of sound during performance. At the same time Microkorg may generate more complex sound, has 4-voice polyphony and can store presets but sounds very commonly and has much worse flexibility.

  • @rpocc Thanks a lot for your help, I think what I'm looking for is something much more this sorta thing over the Microkorg, just wanted to your opinion! :)

  • Tangerine Dream!

    That is all.

  • 0:32 - 0:45 zweet sound!

  • i'm trying to understand how DE works, if i connect my midi keyboard to a daw and then to DE, how do i recored the sound bring modulated bu DE? will the modulation play through a DAW or what? sorry, i'm new to this.

  • @OnCall101Villa:

I'm quite not sure what do you exactly want. All possible connections depend on your soundboard capabilities.

    Normal way:

    * Record MIDI events to MIDI track (In to keyb.'s Out)

    * Play it back (Out to MIDI port/USB and then to DE)

    * Record sound from DE's Audio Out on DAW audio track simultaneously.

You can even play back mono audio track on DAW, send it to DE's Ext. Audio In and return processed sound back to new mono track and also control some parameters via MIDI if needed.

  • sounds very moog-ish. do you know if its clock can be used with a modular system?

  • @LogicBoards

Which clock do you mean? LFO, MIDI->Gate etc? Mostly it all compatible with any modular system.

  • thanks for your reply!!! when i have extra money i will buy this to plug into a motif or virus will see how it will change the sound of digital synth.. have nice day!!

  • Can I plug it into the computer using USB, and then play it from a midi-keyboard?

  • @bohemenmann:

Yes, you can. USB used as MIDI interface. SO you can connect keyboard to PC, record your MIDI part, playing it on module simultaneously. Though i don't recommend use USB-MIDI, it can cause annoying latency.

  • @rpocc

Thank you. But does the latency problem apply also when you connect it through usb and sequence it in midi in DAW, or just when you want to play it through a midikeyboard connected through midi?

Just wondering if I should need a new soundcard with midi-ports before I buy the Dark Energy.

  • @bohemenmann: It is complex issue. USB interface is asynchronous and have low interrupt priority in operating systems. Because of it you MAY encounter sync and latency problems in some case. Moreover there's various behavior of sync using either DAW's or external or WinMM MIDI clock generation source even with semipro/pro PCI and 1394 audio/MIDI-interfaces. I think you can try module on your current setup and buy interface later if needed. Latency will be not so horrible for non-pro application.

  • @rpocc

Thank you very much. I will consider buying a Dark Energy then, love the sound of it!

  • Your little Videos made me bought this little Fella. I have tested the A100 Modular System from a Friend of mine but i don't liked the Sound of the Standard VCOs and Filter that much. But the DE really got me. (Other parts?) Anyway...Nice Demo! Playing some expressive tones is always better than blabla...

  • @lordoid:

Glad to hear it! I didn't examine internals of DE, but i heard that it's VCO is identical to A-110. But DE has different VCA that can apply some integration of kind of little waveshaping to signal.

  • 0:33 sounds kind of BoC ish

  • what do you think if i buy this to use it with a digital keyboard.... do you think it will add a lot of warm to the synth??

  • @onlinemusicnews:

I'm not sure i understand you right, but it's no actuall matter what keyboard you're using, MIDI or analog CV/Gate (scale can be fine adjusted via internal trimmer and you can make synth a bit out of tune for more fat sound in mix). At least you can use internal soft-arpeggiator using MIDI keyboard.

  • Ah, i see, you mean keyboard-synthesizer. Of course DE can add some warmness to composition if used in right manner. I use it for leads from time to time and as filter-box for bass-guitar.

  • Excellent demo. This is a beautiful sounding synth.

  • At 0:37 I actually said 'wow'..

    ..sweet as bro'!

**starts copying the setup to his own DE**

  • Thanks for posting ;-) Great demo

  • HI, great video! I'm a guitarguy looking into this thing for some homerecording. I got a USB midi keyboard and a macbook pro with garage band and an apogee duet. will it work with this setup or will I need another midi controller / signal creating device? does it work with an audio source, ie could I run a guitar signal from an amp though it?

    cheers mate!

  • @christopherzberlin:

You have great set up! This should be enough to play module with keyboard. DE's audio input has sufficient sensivity to pre-amplify guitar signal, and Audio Out is already attenuated to line level. (i also use module as LFOed filter for bass)

But please note that it's impossible to to turn inernal oscillator completely off. The perfect way i found to eliminate it is to make osc. work beyond audible range like a kind of tape AC Bias circuit:

    (see next comment)

  • @rpocc great thanks!!! just shot one on ebay!! your video sold it to me! ;-)

  • 1. Connect MIDI to DE's MIDI Out

    2. Connect DE's Gate Out to OSC CV In

    3. Set OSC Octave switch to highest state

    4. Set PW pot to max.

    5. Set waveform switch to Pulse state

    6. Press and hold highest C during all record time

    7. ...

    8. PROFIT!

  • 0.38 to 0.44 is awesome

  • dude 00:37 - 00:44 - loop that shit!!

    sexy sounds! i want one!!

  • impressive sound creation! do you control it by MIDI, or where do you get the melody and rythm from? sorry for this maybe trivial question, I'm new to the field of electrionic generated sounds and very interested

  • @granzl:

Yes, in this video it controlled via MIDI. It has built-in converter very similar to MCV-4 unit, transforming MIDI-messages to control voltages and Gate impulses. (But theres some insignificant differences between them).

  • Sounds great! Love it when you crank up the resonance and it's self oscillating, real good sounding synth that! Wish it had a second OSC mind you I'm sure you could patch a second sound source from another synth or something right?

  • @vinyljunkie07:

Yes, module has external audio input.

  • @vinyljunkie07 yes, its completely ready for more modules, im starting to build my modular synth, but ill use the dark energy as a base for it. so i can patch other things into and from the de. you could patch cv1 out into external vco, use lf1out to modulate that external vco, that vco into ext. audio to pass it through the filter, and voila, you have 2 vco's

  • love that dog howling sound you got there.. pretty cool, the other reviewers for the Dark Energy don't do this synth any justice at all!!!

  • The demo I was expecting for ! Thank you so much.

Every one always do sequencing demos and never show the lead possibilities of their machine.

    Thanks a lot !

  • @TheLimiter

You're welcome. I'm totally agree with your words. It's quite tricky to find analogue synth demo without same non-self-explainable bleeps and glitches. By the way, do you know that it has oboard slew limiter and it's easy to add glide control just with external pot?

  • excellent

  • @ 0:40 - NIIIICE!!!

  • 0:32

    Sweetspot

  • @gr8ape

Oh yeah, 0:320:47 is my favourite moment. I love that retro-moogly-old-school presets.

  • Man this sounds really good!

  • best demo of dark energy so far!

  • @BlueIzzzs :

Thanks! I glad to know that vintage-style melodies and sound is enjoyed by people.

  • There is a red cable connected to the audio input and a grey cable connected to the envelop output. Do these cables have any function in this demo ? Is everything we hear the pure dark energy and the memory man or are any other sound sources ?

  • In this one — no. Only memoty man and DE.

But it used in "Analogue Electronic Jam".

  • This is the most impressing demo of the dark energy i´ve ever heard. Please tell me witch one of the electro harmonix delays you´ve used ? Deluxe memory man, Memory Boy or Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai ? Thanx

  • Thanks. Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai.

  • cool to here something from this not sounding "expemental" .. it sounds sweet!

  • I like the sound very much!!!

Could I use this as a stand alone synt conected to a midi keyboard for playing with my band ?

Becouse I can't afford a moog I am thinkin of buying one of these, would it be a god substitute?

    Greetings from Slovenia!

  • It completely depends on your play style. If you really need real-time control on every sound, all of theese frequency modulations etc, try this one or 500-Euro 3-oscillator MFB synth ( i dont remember exact model name). But if you're planing to play some classic synth sounds, control just zutoff and pair of other parameters you should try something digital with PRESETS!, e.g. Waldorf Blofeld. Low-cost 24-voice digital polysynth I used one on Pink Floyd tribute party.

  • Thanks for your fast answer! The thing is I would like a monophonic synth not polyphonic, with all those controls on sounds just like on the good old analog moog synthesizers. I play in a 70's style rock band and my old Hammond just isn't enough.

  • Something like prog/space rock? Do you have records?

About gear: Is it acceptable for you to set up manually every sound, draw patch diagrams on paper templates etc?

  • No we play rock wiht a little bit of funk, groove, blues, jazz influences. Sadly we don't have a real record yet, just some demos. I am a complet beginer about monophonic synths, I never had one, but I always wanted one for playing solos. I think it shouldn't be a problem with setting the sounds once you figure out how to set a few of your favorites. Would you recomend it to me as a poor man's minimoog?

  • Minimoog has 3 oscillators while Doepfer has only 1, note this! Take a look on MFB Kraftzwerg - it looks cheap but listen to demos. 3 oscillators are really nice. If i had more money and patience to order it at the time when i got purchased Doepfer, i would prefer MFB!

If you're beginner in a substractive synthesis, monophonic synths etc i suggest you to try to mess around with some virtual devices.

  • And about blofeld. It has polyphony but all classic monophonic synth features such as portamento, non-retriggering envelopes, simple thin sounding are possible because although it is substractive synth. I use it in rock context. Is has DSP block providing reverbs, delays and choruses, even multitimbral and matrix modulation behavior.

  • Woow this is a lot of informations :)

A virtual synth is a good advice for begining and they aren't expensive. I will check the MFB. It's just hard to decide what to buy if you don't have a lot of experinces and you don't want to get burned. Maybe a microkorg wouldn't be a bad idea for the begining, they are quite cheap.

    EEEH I am confused :)

Well you surtnly helped me alot!

Thank you for all you answers and have a good time!!

  • There's lots of gear around!

Korg vs Waldorf is Vocoder and and tiny keyboard vs patch space, women's bag size and large polyphony.

For me, Waldorf sohuld sound better, but we also were use Microkorg and found that it is not so bad for rock.

Another good one virtual is Clavia Micro-modular «brick». It has no controllers but onboard from MIDI-key may be used.

And finally, there is another price-efficient analogue module: Technosaurus Microcon II. Sounds very nice, but very simple.

  • Oh! I've forgot the last one that my friends have: Vermona M.A.R.S. It is out of production, but it's very good sounding analogue monophonic 1U rack-size module with presets capability. We got one with 2U controller extesion (MIDI programmer) for only 500 bucks! Only problem — we encountered malfunctino during live work and even toasted up his processor. I think it is due to bad power supply in russian clubs.

  • At other side, really nice feature of Dark Energy is it's audio Input. But please note: you can NOT completely turn off it's oscillator. Even in pulse with minimal width some buzz leaking to VCA and VCA itself is quite noisy. I've discovered all this things during filtering of bass guitar with this module.

Buy the way. Synth has no portamento knob! Althoug you can add your own somewhere: it has special pins inside but look at the panel — where to place it? On the side like some cheap DYIer? :)

  • Very nice!

What external audio do you feed into the Dark Energy?

  • On this video it isn't any external signal. Some PWM by LFO causing Hard-sync effect and with delay making sound fat.

on other videos i feed Ritm-2 into ext. in as second oscillator (i bought few A-100 units later)

  • Very nice.

I have a Dark Energy since a week.

Very nice machine. I can't wait to get a Dark Time sequencer.

You made a very nice demo. Always nice to hear what an instrument is capable of.

  • Then you have to glue synth and seq together :)
