Almost 11 years since. If Dale survived, he probably would have just retired within the last 3 years or possibly, just maybe, still be racing today. But let's face it, he was around for over a decade, he would have retired any time soon from now.
I was at this race and became a fan of Dale Sr. WHILE watching (was watching stewart till he wrecked). IMO nascar needs to revert back to this style of SS racing, with the new safety rules an accident that took Dale Sr. is extremely unlikely to happen now-a-days. Open the plates and put the roof air-dam back on!!
i can recall just about every moment of this race off the top of my head. first race i sat down for the entire thing start to finish and never moved. 8 years old man how time flies
This was the last entire race I watched since 2001. I just recently got back into NASCAR. Kinda displeased with what I have found. Dale Sr. would have been.
Wait a minute, you mean the telecasts actually went through the startling lineup and gave details about the drivers, and didn't just run a ticker at the top and said "pick your favorite"? I for one, am simply SHOCKED!
Fox is by far the best coverage of NASCAR in a very long time. NBC was alright and TNT isnt bad! But ESPN is flat out TERRIBLE!!!!!!! NASCAR is a swing and a miss for ESPN!!!!!!!!
wow watching this when the brodcast went on the air how happy they were to be on Fox and everything and they had no clue what was to happen, its errie, the race had an errie feeling to me now that i remember back on it, something just wasnt quite right.
i cant remember but i hope this was before FOX fucked things up. I dont want a 1hr long pre-race and i dont care to see digger when they show a sweet camera angle... fox you suck and i hate product placement
whats the pay per view fees , if there is for this . Every sports is ppv in USA e.g. wwe(which is a kind of a sport), superbowl, daytona etc , here in my country its free, that is just paying for the cable (no fees for ppv).
I agree with Jrl24rules39. While I was watching this race I was thinking "Wow this is going to be one of the best races ever." Then of the last lap I thought "Well nobody will remember this race for anything but that crash now"
I think had it not been for Dale's wreck, many would regard this race as one of the greatest in NASCAR history. I believe it still is, as do several others, but are afraid to mention it for what happened on the last lap.
To change the subject, I loved the way they gave the starting lineup back then.
So sad to see this now...So much has changed since...Marlin is out of it, Rudd, Elliot isn't compedative, lot of great personalities like Rusty gone and of course miss the ol Winston Cup.
inst this the race when dale ernhardt got into that reack tat costed him his life. i dont wanna say this is the race when he got killed cause the race did'nt kill him
There's one here on Youtube. I'm not exactly sure why you would want one, though, considering how much more catchy the theme FOX used the next year was...
Don't Forget These: Lucky Dog Green White Checkers Jeff Purvis (Hurt at a Wreck Nazareth 2002) Ricky Rudd (Retired) Ron Hornaday (Back To NCTS) Terry Labonte (Retired) Rusty Wallace (Retired) Open Wheel Invasion The Chase Top 35 Rule SAFER Barrier And Much Much More
people say this race is a tragic race but its not. things happen for a reason. i loved dale. but... when dale crashed i screamed my head so i guess... dale we miss u! rip
How interesting. In the 2001 daytona 500 all 43 drivers were born in the U.S. For the 50th Daytona 500 they could be only 39 drivers born in the U.S. Oh how NASCAR has change in the past 6 years. Of the 4 drivers born outside of the U.S 2 are from Canada. Patrick Carpentier and Jacques Villeneuve , one from the UK(Scotland)Dario Franchitti and 1 from Colombia Juan Montoya. Oh and one of them is married to American actress Ashley Judd.
Fuck you rolfcopter3, they are not rednecks and how dare you make fun of someone's death regardless of who it is. At least Earnhardt did something useful in his life unlike a stupid fuck like yourself.
it was my first full season, other than the last part of this race and the eventual champion, i have to agree with u...i really liked cheering on the underdog, Benson, who had one of his best seasons
yea, but the auto industry would flip, pontiac pulled out of nascar, dodge doesn't make the intrepid anymore, and the fusion replaced the taurus, also, toyota, they have plans to dominate the sport
I always use to look foward to the daytona 500. since dales death i havent really care who won. except in 2004. maybe the 50th running next year will be good.
ya same here. this was the first ever race i watched and this is the one tht got me into it. especialy when i saw the big wrek wit stewart flipping but i was young when this race was on and i had no clue tht dale died. :(
Love DALE FOREVER AND ALWAYS

@vikingsallday005 IDK why. But there are 43 drivers so all we know is that they were the bottom 2 on qualifying.

But it is heartbreaking to never see him race ever again after.

Nope. The only thing that's ppv that you mentioned is Wrestlemania.

Nascar has changed a lot since 2001...
(not to mention the three deaths in 2000)
Dale Earnhardt - dead
Bobby Hamilton - dead
Steve Park - brain damage from wreck at Darlington
No longer "Winston Cup"
HANS Device mandatory
Car of Tomorrow
Dale Jr doesn't race for DEI
plus hundreds of other rediculous rule changes...
MetalUpYourAss29 4 years ago 5
Bobby Hamilton died of cancer not at a race. He died in 2007
Winbutternuts1 4 years ago
i know.. but we still lost him, that was my point.
I didn't mean he died in 2000 either... I was referring to Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr, and Tony Roper.
