I found Vincent Lopez played quite interesting arrangements for the AMPICO, especially when the pianists were required, by the company, to improvise a melody in every AMPICO roll.
When I was on the China Coast in the late 1950s and 60s I heard from old china coast men that there had been some great bands in Shanghai in the twenties and thirties;weren't the Chinese lucky? And whislt this music was being composed and,for us more important, played half the world was locked in mortal struggle.Amazing.
@Squarerig I know about the Whitey Smith orchestra. There was an article about it on "tales of old China" website. One of the few really good songs in the CD "Oriental Illusions" is from them: "Night time in old Shanghai"
Ah, the good old Hotel Pennsylvania, where I've stayed a few times. They still answer the phone with a clip from Pennsylvania 6-5000, the Glenn Miller tune, and even retain that phone #. His band used to play there. But I've heard the hotel is going to be demolished soon, despite its vivid history. A pity.
