I used to swim in Ala Moana lagoon every day at dawn and now and then one would pop up close to me, startling both of us. Then it would dive and disappear as quickly as it had appeared. Those were wonderful experiences to cherish, but even closer than I deserved to be. The ocean is their home; I just visit.

I participated in and directed marine biology research on sea turtles for 6 years before moving to Hawaii. To those of you 'experts' out there who claim that sea turtles are not harmed by this kind of 'activity', Research indicates otherwise and it is not uncommon for sea turtles to suffer what is essentially a "heart attack" when they are being chased by swimmers or divers, let alone being caught and held down under water where they cannot breathe.
To many it may seem Jamie isn't doing anything wrong, but he is! for one thing is he's not a scienstist doing research, and if the picture was for awareness of the Fibropapillomas disease, then he should've done things differently...and not just try to get the perfect shot for a picture. But some may not think before actions...thus the situation now. I apologize if i came off racist or offended anyone, but emotions got involved, and so i spoke & made a video. (continued below...)

First of all, these turtles aren't endangered. They're on the list of "Threatened" which is a lot less severe. There are so many turtles in Hawaii, you practically can't get in the water without seeing them. They should really be removed from the list. I see them more often than mongoose now. On top of this, I know of locals who have not only touched, but caught, cooked, and eaten these things. They are FAR more common than Enviros would have you believe. This turtle didn't get hurt at all.
