It's a tough piece to play. That left hand gets tired and slows up trying to keep up with the right hand. I copied it from the original 78 on the piano bench. Got me thrown out of piano lessons for playing jazz. When I got the original sheet music I was really surprised that I wasn't that far off the mark.
Kudos! Extremely well done! You sure know how to boogie, amigo! This is strictly from coolsville, daddy-o! We're all hip to this jive! Keep up the good work!
My transcription consists of EXCERPTS from the Meade Lux Lewis recording, as Richard has explained. I didn't add anything of my own. You could now try adding some of your own ideas in between the given material. The last 4 bars of each 12 are pretty much identical each time, so the improvisation mainly takes place over the first 8 bars... Good luck!
Well done Richard! Just wanted to mention, as no one else seems to have done, that this transcription is from my book IMPROVISING BLUES PIANO, published by Schott Music. It's the last piece (and probably the hardest) in the book! I play it on the CD that comes with the book.
Great stuff! Very controlled. Check out my version as well. Hey -- absolutely *love* all those flips and switches and buttons and lights on your piano! What type is it?
Thanks richieclarkie. I am playing a mixture of the original version together with those of Claude Bolling and Jim Redfarn; I will now add something of Tim Richards too !
Superb feeling, great playing but more particularly to my mind it is a personalised rendition of HTTB and it makes good to hear originality in this great classic of boogie woogie. Thank you very much.
Thanks Jacques for you kind comments. However this arrangement is by a guy called Tim Richards. He transcribed it from the 1937 recording of this piece with the ending from a 1927 version. Meade Lux Lewis changed the way he played the number in later years as far as I can tell. I guess thats where Rick Wakeman got his version from.
A nice performance. You have the right feeling - the right touch. You just need holding a steady pace with your left hand (no slowing down or speeding up) when those right hand triplets starts flowing and you can be a very good boogie woogie player. But this is not a put-down comment: I'm impressed by your performance!
Very good book if you are learning how to play blues piano. I remember looking at this piece and thinking I'd never even be able to attempt it. I'll put some of the other peices up if you are interested.

Hey Tim.... cool you found this. Your book helped me get from a basic standard to this fairly quickly.
I have recommended it to many people.
