Marcion used an early version of the gospel of Luke.
It seems the Roman Church responded by expanding Luke and fabricating Acts of the Apostles, which connected Paul (whose epistles were very important for Marcionites) to the gospel apostles.
The one fact that has always appealed to me, having Jewish ancestors on the Dutch side of family, is that Christianity started off as a Jewish cult; we have this icon of Jesus being a blonde Germanic princely warrior, presumably for the Goths and Visigoths??
In a very real, and tragic sense, though, the fact of the theological rejection of Judaic roots caused enormous problems for the Jews. Marcionism was a particular problem, but other, rejected (fortunately) Gospels would have made matters even worse.
""we have this icon of Jesus""
I haven't seen a blonde Jesus. Most of the paintings depict him as dark-haired and fair-skinned. Is this a symbol that is seen in the Netherlands or Germany?
I did not post this lecture in order to give ignorance a soapbox. Literalists deny biblical scholarship because it does not fit their cherished delusions. The history of Christianity is fascinating; much more interesting than endless Bible quotes. Knowledge of the actual history of derivative-Jewish-theology does not preclude belief. It does, however, preclude believing the myth that the Bible is the Inspired Word of God. Go away and educate yourself!
