You may remember me from our earlier correspondence. I remember you from your dull use of other people's music with a 'hype' set at Homegrown, poor use of language and the large amount of New Zealand taxpayer funds that have been dumped into your boring music. Well here we are.
We hope you enjoy it and hope you are not feeling as 'ill' as you have been in the past.
@GoldMedalFamous I thought you may be credible due to your provocative comment so I had a listen to your music on your channel and I figured it all out.
You dont speak for NZ, but from your failure to get funding due to a lack of talent.
Though your music has the cliche NZ underground "keep it real " alternativity to it, its crap. And u know it.
DJCXL has made music happen for NZ, Respect acheivement.
Why dont you write something good and compete, instead of whining about others success?
@HeisW140 Hi HeisW140. As a NZ citizen I speak for NZ as you speak for NZ just as any NZer speaks for NZ. I love my music and I am sorry you don't. I am not sad that you don't love it. It is perfectly fine to have different opinions. But it is a fact that DJ CXL's derivative US style hip hop isn't "uniquely NZ" at all. It is funded by the NZ taxpayer yet it could have been made by anyone who listened to Top 40 music in their formative years. DJ CXL makes NZ more boring & more braindead bogan.
@GoldMedalFamous NZers can speak freely, but for all NZ? Im a member of that group. The musos you dislike are also NZers. You dont speak for me, them or anyone I know. Yes, taxes are high and much music isnt homegrown, but people like it. He does OZ shows as well. Bogans? Theyve always been in NZ, and its not up to CXL to fix that. Kiwi music=poverty and obscurity. NZ has that in adundance already. He, like all kiwis is just making ends meet. I do understand your viewpoint tho. The bar is low.
@HeisW140 I should also point out that Ive known him on and off since he was a drummer playing metal in hs early teens, as did I. We played the tiny Auckland scene back in the early 90s. Hes a decent guy and loves music. Hes not an opportunist... He could go "kiwi" but then what happens? Hes basically unemployed. I think some of the music he has written is kiwi. Name 10 famous NZ musicians who made it playing Kiwi music in NZ living in NZ
@GoldMedalFamous If we look back over history in NZ, most of the music was heavily influenced by overseas music. What genre have we ever created? 80s Bands like Peking man and Satelite Spies played pop that was very much what was happening overseas at the time. Mi-Sex sounded like Europe pop, Th' dudes sounded British, Ray Columbus sounded like overseas rocknroll...The vocalist in "Counting the beat" by the swinger even faked an English accent. We are not poineers, we are emulators.
@HeisW140 There are examples of NZ bands being successful overseas making innovative music that influenced overseas acts. Flying Nun bands make NZ soundscapes & sing in NZ accents ( e.g. Bailterspace, The 3Ds, HDU, Dead C & Tall Dwarfs). Hip hop acts like Upper Hutt Posse sing in te reo. Recently bands like Birchville Cat Motel, The Sproutts & The Vorn Band have a unique voice. There are pioneers. The main problem is the conservatism of the media & an audience that laps it up.
@GoldMedalFamous True - flying nun did have a lot of success... not hiphop however. DJCXLs group Ill Semantics sang in Kiwi accents as do the guys in this video. I do agree with the importance of homegrown music. .Aucklands the largest Polynesian city in the world and CXLs music is enjoyed there. Perhaps hiphop is irrelevant in a small white town like Invercargill. Thats not a dig, thats an observation. If you knew hiphop well, youd notice a difference between the US, European and NZ sound .
@HeisW140 We're based in Wellington but I went to school in Invercargill. We've played Auckland twice this year & played 6 gigs in Wellington & Dunedin in September alone. What about 'How Bizarre' by OMC, a huge international hit. A large audience for experimental music exists in Wellington. Saturday's final 2 Fredstock gigs @ Fred's & Happy were totally packed. At a Music Managers Forum earlier this year their key message was having a point of difference. Odd bands get noticed overseas.
@GoldMedalFamous Well if you have a large audience, then obviously CXLs evil hiphop isnt stealing the minds and hearts of the audience after all. OMC was a one hit wonder but yes, again I understand where you are coming from. But you still dont get it - DJ CXL is a DJ - his career didnt begin spinning NZ hiphop, coz there wasnt any, aside ffom a few rough recordings.... makes sense his sound is more international. its not such a bad thing... many colors make a rainbow.
@HeisW140 I don't think DJ CXL's hiphop is evil, just boring. There's some really interesting hip hop out there. Turn-tablism is a pretty old artform. The C20th composer John Cage composed a piece called Imaginary Landscape No. 1 in 1939 for 2 variable-speed phono turntables, frequency recordings, muted piano and cymbal. I discovered DJ CXL when I saw a clip of the his hype set at Homegrown. I couldn't see what was "homegrown" about playing top 40 while a couple of singers yell along on top.
@GoldMedalFamous its funny how you say daaance instead of dance how we "kiwis" are supposed to say it in your 'Dunedin has got to daaance' song ;) I do love how your really just judging me and my crew off that Homegrown video, what you saw were highlights, but hey, if it ain't your thing, it ain't your thing, simple! Your sound kinda reminds me of Darcy Clay, i like his music, if you weren't so negative towards me, i may have liked yours too...thanks NZ on air ;)
Nice Bro. Nice.
