XNA and others are good to start from, I guess... but you'll never be able to have enough control / animations / effects ect for yor games. If anyone thinks that they can build something close to CoD / Battlefield / whatever-apart-from-a-mario-li­ke-game, sorry to crush your dreams. Just thought I'd say this for some...

@Programmer9095 Maybe not WITH Xna, But none the less, XNA is a very wonderful tool to teach you the basics very well and very efficiently. It also allows you to advance your knowledge in your programming language to see how the program works inside a video game..... Sure you cannot make Call of Duty with it, But it sure as hell can start you on your path to being able to make a call of duty someday.

@AnnoyingXboxer I'd suggest java and Unity for that then. Free to get, powerful, efficient, and there are tons of tutorials on youtube. Not to hate on XNA or anything, just saying.

@AnnoyingXboxer XNA uses C# as a programming language. To be fair though, C# and Java are pretty similar, one is not necessarily difficult than the other. :S

@sileysut8991 What excatly do you program? Your channel contains nothing, and XNA is hardly sucky. Of course it's not the best framework, but it's decent considering it's free. With Java, the problem is that you are limited with graphics capability, unless you are really skilled with Java and OpenGL. Even then, you'll need a good team of developers to get as far as making a game let alone becoming popular. The only Java games that ever really made it big were Minecraft and Runescape.

@bananamunchable Can't really says "suck it". You are very limited to what you can actually learn with Youtube, and most videos show bad practice in coding, and leave you with unoptimised code. I also looked at your channel, which only contains a Minecraft video. You're 13, and can't figure out how to create a registration script in PHP, so it's really unlikely that you created an FPS.

easier to make a game in any basic language only take minutes to get something going vs making a game in days and it will teach you the theory alot faster so you can learn other languages faster.

no one is going to optimize code unless there a engineer with experience.

u cant say it take a long time and act like its alot of work. Some people are smarter than others when i was 12 i made a small demo of a fps. You dont really need a shit load of books and all these coarses. DONT GET ME WRONG... ofcoarse to be more professional you need to learn but people learn in different ways a guy could teach himself and make a game like black ops and then someone who had lots of practice and make something like pacman

@TheUberphil C# is just a version of C. you can use c++ in games aswell. c# is a fantastic language to learn because if you already know Visual Basic(the starter programming language) which is what i suggest everyone learns first, then it leads onto c# nicely then c++

For the past three months I have been collaborating with my friends, making a game. We have a story, level designs, a list of ingame variables, damage and powerup equations set.

We are slowly making progress, programming is complex, and i agree that you require Time, Thought and dedication.

We have all the time in the world, we are carefully thining about everything we do, and we are serious.

I agree, I'm getting a Master degree in embedded software but back when I started college I was 20 years old (turning 25) and there were 17 year old kids bragging about their programming skills and how they've been making games and "hacking" since they were 5 or so! they thought they knew it all until they got bombarded with discrete math, calculus, physics, software architecture etc, suddenly they all dropped like flies! any one can copy and paste code! it does take time to do it well though!
