  • I love how she "falls down" at the end lol

  • Look her up in Wikipedia and you will get accurate info re her origins.

  • @saagua1953 She grew up in Kansas (actually on the state line of Missouri) :) But I was explaining to someone that she is 100% Irish-American.

  • Amazing the misinformation here. She was born Joyce Flaherty in Prairie Village (as FLYNN says) Kansas, but I think she graduated from Wichita State U. before going on to Philadelphia for further study. Her family is Irish-American. She married an Italian but they were divorced. The idea that Americans can't sing is simply stupid. The soprano generally acknowledged to be the greatest ever, Rosa Ponselle, was born in the USA to a family of Italian origin.

  • Congratulations on the Grammy win! Go TEAM SYCORAX!

  • I am not big fan of her style of singing. The overall feel I get from her is vulnerability and it makes me feel rather anxious. I find this to be the case in almost every song I listen to her perform. I wish she can somehow change that. I do not find this to be the case with some other singers.

  • Joyce DiDonato is American, born Joyce Flaherty in Prairie Village, Kansas a suburb of Kansas City and is a graduate of Kansas State. Her first husband was DiDonato. I think you're a bit behind the times, like maybe still in the 19th century, to think that neither American nor Canadian singers have the requisite talent.

  • She is originally Italian !!

  • Wow! Rossini would have been very happy to have his aria done justice! What an exciting mezzo-. Damn close to the league of Marilyn Horne– definitely equal to everyone's mezzo- heroine, Bartoli.

  • @Rhopoe In fact if you compare Joyce singing Tanti Affetti with Horne I think you find Joyce is without doubt superior. Horne has to slow down to do some of the coloratura where Joyce simply sails though it without a hitch.

  • @saagua1953 Perhaps you're right. I am no singer & so I wouldn't really know. I base my judgments solely on my own tastes. I just prefer Horne's dark, heavy, & yet agile voice to any other mezzo-, especially in her early performances and recital recordings. I've not heard any mezzo- around with such a thick, heavy-set, weighty voice-- & I simply adore that about Horne.

  • Her best album out of the three I love sooo much! =D

  • The most brilliant female singer I have encountered - every note is clear-cut in combination with sensitivity.

  • I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!

  • Wonderful ! .... Is she Canadian or American ?

  • @The1620 she is American!

  • @dnine14 Thanks: ..she's a delight

  • @The1620 She is ORIGINALLY Italian. Neither American Nor Canadian have the required talent to perform such a task !! In other word they're not good at classical music, especially Opera !!

  • DiDonato is definitely the best mezzo of our days. I'm not afraid to say that. Rarely has a lyric mezzo had such accurate and extremely agile coloratura, beautiful trills, effortless top, warm and perfectly controlled middle and, above all, great dramatic skills that are always polished with her excellent taste. Nothing sounds oversung or overacted, just ideal.

  • @Homoclassicus I totally agree.

  • She is lovely. BUT if you really want to hear an amazing singer who is working today in this fach -- find Theodora Hanslowe! Beauty, a voice of molten gold and acting that matches every moment of passion this music demands!.

  • @WynnCreasyFineArt Such an unnecessary comment.

  • A very special mezzo who can soar into the soprano range, seemingly without a register break. And hot to boot.

  • Just saw her perform at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica last night with French pianist- David Zobel...AMAZING! She is such a force and was incredibly charming! Met her after the show for a signing and she was just so genuinely kind...Brava Signora, Brava!

  • I want to be Joyce DiDonato when I grow up :P Such a distinctive, passionate voice, breath-taking technique and agility, great musicianship... she`ll always be one of my favourite mezzos. I love her Romeo... great performance here, I`d be exited to see it live!!

  • Smells like Call Me Mister...

  • @opraluvr

LOL, yes, but that was exclusibly of pants roles :P that's a good album though

  • My birthday present =) I can't wait... I Iove Joyce!

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! i am so excited for this :)

  • Such a brilliant voice- she is destined to be marked with the best really soon.

  • 3:20 she is a wow and a double wow

  • Maybe she is wearing skirts for the Diva parts, pants for Divo-can't tell.. Ms. DiDonato is getting better all the time-listen to the Massenet! Just the right balance between singer, chorus and orchestra. This ought to be another award-winner.

  • @LeipzigC1 : she's singing this aria as the title character in Cendrillon at Royal Opera London next summer

  • @CharlotteTempleton :One look at her busy schedule makes my head spin. She's got it all-energy, intelligence and a huge capacity for hard work. She's also busy with her website and twitters in her "spare" time.

  • thanks. i like this video

  • Une pensée pour le "Call me Mister" de Jennifer Larmore ....

  • 1:57-3:05 is my favorite part. Those embellishments are simply stunning!

Also, in the first aria, I noticed that DiDonato's shirt is first a black/white one, which changes to a brown shirt with white sleeves for the last note (3:20), and which then changes back to the original black/white for the final chords (3:37). :-p Guess the video-editing crew's skills are not as smooth as her coloratura. XD

  • Impeccable! Brilliant!

  • Positively divine.

    Such an inspiration.

  • Bravissimo! Lovely voice!

  • flawless!

  • great !!!
