  • AWESOME VOICES

  • Jean Sibelius the composer was actualy christian.

  • religion ruined this song...dammit, well good thing Finlandia isn't about believing in fairytales. This version should be removed from the world.

  • @MrPhfron This is an amazing piece of music. Just because it has to do with religion should mean nothing. Many of the classical masterpieces have to do with religion yet we hold them up as the highest level of musical art. Learn to live in a multicultural world of great diversety and enjoy the good all groups have to offer.

  • @CaptainRidley the original is a amazing piece of music. this crap isn't

  • This tune raises emotions with the Finnish people because the 1941 version of the Finlandia hymn (words by Veikko Antero Koskinniemi) raises memories of those who died defending the country from the Soviet invasion. However, the words to 'Be Still My Soul', although in English, are quite apt for those who held off the might of the Soviet military machine from November 1939 to March 1940. Heavily outnumbered, the Finns inflicted huge losses on the Soviets.

  • @willux79 I should think the people of Finland would be proud their national anthem was believed to be beautiful enough to be used to praise Heavenly Father. Whether you are religious or not, it should be taken as a great compliment.

  • @dancingmadhatter Nowadays, it's called intellectual property. I don't care how great you think your religion's deity is, I wouldn't care to have my intellectual property ripped off. If your god is so great, why doesn't he send his followers some original music to praise him by? And, my biblical knowledge is a little rusty, in what verse did the christian god say, "Never mind about the 8th commandment"?

  • @dancingmadhatter Uhmm.. there are lots of worse compositions used to praise god, I don't see any reason to be proud. But I don't mind either, music should be free. All music is more or less build on something already existing. I'm glad this piece exists.

  • It doesn't matter that the exact melody of finlandia was borrowed. It's a rather common practice actualy. Two examples are God Save The Queen, that melody was borrwed for my country, tis of thee. and several other national hymns including Norway's. and another set of old tunes 'What Child is This?' and 'Greensleeves'.

  • why would there be a dislike anyways? let alone 2?

  • @TheCliffy007 Trolls...

  • @catt0993 I feel down at times too. This song has helped me through many a hard night. Remembering how much the Savior Jesus Christ Loves us! And loves me individually. It is hard to see that when everything around you is falling apart. But when you do see it it is like the light at the end of the tunnel.. or the sun shining after a terrible dark storm. My heart is full this morning with love and gratitude to a wonderful Father in Heaven.. who has us in mind through everything :)

  • I have never felt more comfort than I do know

  • finlandia!!!!

  • Simplemente genial! =)

  • Majestic, in every word. amazing

  • We should just listen to the fabulous music, the gorgeous voices and be comforted by the message. Be still.

  • This is absolutely beautiful!

  • @bellcurve2 Given their very precarious geographical location and cultural independence, the Finns must have to defend themselves to the last man. Imagine to be placed between Sweden and Russia! And mind you, the Rus from whom the people of Russia descended are actually Swedes!

  • The MTC really brings out the beauty of this hymn.

  • The Mormon Tabernacle Choir would sound much better if they sang in 5-part or at least 3-part harmony. They all sing in one pitch and they sing too slow and too high. There is no base. The end result is that some hymns don't sound as powerful. This hymn sounds much better when a Finnish choir gets its harmonies into it. Anyway, good effort nonetheless.

  • Comment removed

  • @tamaolemaa you obviously didn't listen to the whole song. or you did but didn't listen well enough. they were singing the first parts in one pitch to give a wonderful gripping effect on a climax on 3:33 where the different voices then broke up into harmonies.

  • @tamaolemaa I think the real problem with the Choir is that even when they sing in parts, there are too many voices singing at once and the sound is a little too muddied to properly hear the harmonies. (which don't come in until 3:33, as haruspex07 said)

  • Thank you for posting. These lyrics speak so true to me right now. =]

  • Wonderful American Choir for Wonderful, Free American people.......land of liberty and justice for all. God Bless America this happy 4th of July, 2011

  • In the army, I was an organist for the Chaplain and I had to play at more memorial services than I care to remember. This was a staple because of the comfort in the message.

  • For those who love the Lord that feel sad, discouraged or tired. Be still thy soul the Lord is at your side. Take a moment to hear with an open heart. God bless you!

  • one of my favorites; thanks for posting so we can add reverence to the Sabbath Day and fill our homes with His love!

  • I love this song

  • Breath taking. I even cried a few times. (;

  • My favorite hymn sung by the world's best choir.... can't get any better...

  • Be Still My Soul is an adaptation of the hymn from Finlandia by J. Sibelius. It never is an English Hymn. Maybe the English might have adopted the melody but this definitely is music from Finlandia by J. Sibelius.

  • @Nonie46 I was surprised to see in the heading that this should be an English hymn. You you are absolutely right, this IS beautiful music - and I who; usually do not shout will write it in capital letters - THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC WAS WRITTEN BY THE FINNISH COMPOSER, JEAN SIBILIUS (1865-1957)

  • @JensenJN And if there is one song that evoked extreme nationalism, it is this one because history teaches me that when the Russian army tried to invade Finland, this song was played and every Finn stood his or her ground which led the Russians to back off!

  • @JensenJN By the song, I mean FINLANDIA by Jan Sibelius.

  • @JensenJN could it not also mean, the Finnish song "sung" in the English Language?

  • Comment removed

  • In response to JensenJN, the melody is indeed the hymnal portion of Finlandia Op. 26 by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, which he wrote in 1899. The lyrics are by Katharina von Schlegal written in 1752 and translated by Jane Borthwick in 1855. A masterful piece of music and my favorite hymn.

  • This is one of my favourite hymns! I love the Saviour and his Gospel. This definitely, the best choir in the World. Love listening to them! Can't wait for General Conference next week!

  • I remember that one morning I woke up feeling really down. I suddenly received a prompting to read the lyrics to this song. So, I did. And I felt immediate comfort. I knew that Jesus and God will always be with me. Now I read these lyrics a lot of times when I am down, and I love the comfort that comes as a result <3

  • @catt0993 Sorry to bring you down, but these lyrics are digusting. The melody is from Jean Sibelius' Finlandia, and later a poem was attached to this part which was a tribute to Finnish soldiers who fought in the Winter war. And then some stupid asshole steals a hymn like that and changes the lyrics. That's very disrespectful and disgusting.

  • @EliasJordan3 The history of the lyrics doesnt make them any less comforting or beautiful. It is a beautiful hymn and I fail to see by what stretch of the imagination they can be called disgusting.

  • @MadeinheavenQueenfan The original hymn is a tribute to Finnish soldiers in the Winter war who kept Finland a free country. Many people die there so we could have a better future. FInland has a higher level of life than the other countries that got their independence later from RUssia, and that is thanks to the people who fought in the WInter war. It's one of the proud moments and songs of Finnish history and someone has the nerve to steal that.

  • @EliasJordan3

    Who stole what?

  • @cb800808 Whoever "wrote" Be still my soul. That guy stole Finlandia or Finlandia Hymn by Jean Sibelius.

  • I love this song. It's one of my favorite hymns. We sang it at our seminary graduation for a classmate of ours who passed away. It brings such a peaceful and calming feeling. I know my Heavenly Father loves me and He wants me to return to Him. I get to serve Him as a missionary in the Florida Tampa Mission and I cannot wait. I'm so excited to teach His truth and to hopefully bring others who are seeking the truth back to Him.

  • i love this song!!..especially when the TABERNACLE CHOIR SINGS IT!!!

  • cont.

O Finland, rise now, rise your young head proudly,

That day is here when you are strong and free.

O Finland, rise now, tell the whole world clearly

    You bore your thralldom manfully.

You did not bend but faced the tyrant boldly.

The day is dawning for our land.

    - Translation by Marja and Philip Binharn

  • One translation of the lyrics of Finlandia, a very patriotic hymn and important to the people of Finland.

O Finland, see, your morning light is dawning,

Nights threatning dark has passed away once more.

The larks sweet song is heralding the morning,

rising and sounding at Heavens door.

The powrs of night before the morn retreating,

the light is dawning for our land.

    ...

    cont.

  • It come down my broken heart at this time while thinking of the children and wife of my son that just died a month ago....the children are still small and it makes me so sad and so dissapointed why this happen to the innocent children lossing thier dad at that ages......and it hurts my feeling so sad and cry always...but i remember Gods words always telling us how to be strong and I remember to listen this song and its a big relieve for me........

  • This is not what Sibelius wrote. Why did they butcher one of the best hymns ever written? If they didn't like the way it was written, why did they use it at all? If it's not a perfect example of disrespect, then I don't know what is. And these people dare to sing about the spiritual matters... One more thing: to the dickhead who called it an "English hymn", get your facts straight, moron!

  • @muurtalo - At times it's wise to keep your thoughts to yourself and not openly display your stupidity openly for everyone to see and laugh at....the comment that you left only shows who the real moron is....

  • @azapachekid Would you be so kind as to remove your head out of your ass and tell me specifically which "thought" of mine seemed stupid and laughable to you? You see, without the specifics you sound like an angry little boy. An angry indoctrinated boy, I might add...

  • Does anyone know where I can purchase this version? I checked Amazon and the album that features Be Still Thy Soul doesn't seem to have this particular version.

  • "English hymn"... Please search for proper arrangement and version of Sibelius Finlandia. - This is like somebody would set new words and arrangement to the National Anthem of the US or another country's Anthem. Would that be ok with you??

  • @hasse55fi Funny...if you do your research you will realize the National Anthem of the United States was an arrangement with new words of an old English pub song.

  • @goddesslovr88 ...well, your example is the other way around. Look forward hearing pub songs using the US National Anthem melody. How do you think people in the US would react? Almost like burning the US flag I'd guess. National icons shouldn't be messed with imho. The word is *respect*

  • @hasse55fi "Defence of Fort McHenry" was a poem written by Francis Scott Key in 1814. "To Anacreon in Heaven" was the official song of the Anacreontic Society, an 18th-century English drinking club of amateur musicians, composed by John Stafford Smith. Key's brother-in-law realized the poem fit the song and renamed it "The Star-Spangled Banner". John Philip Sousa recorded it in 1904 and it was officially designated as the national anthem in 1931.

  • @goddesslovr88

    Who knew? Thanks!

  • Beautiful, but sad how Finnish national identity has been transformed in a religious performance like this. Still, an universally touching piece of work. This is the unofficial national anthem of Finland, which raises some conflicting feelings of the translation....

  • @willux79 This isn't a "translation", it just uses the melody. There are many songs that use this melody.

There is an English translation for Finlandia, which is the "anthem of peace", you can find it by searching "Finlandia".

  • @willux79 I think that the reason behind that is those Finnish Saints that came to America brought their traditions and their identity with them and applied them to worship. How fortunate we are as Latter Day Saints to have such a diverse and beautiful tradition in our hymns. : )

  • @willux79 Indeed :) From a Finn to a Finn :)

  • The sad thing to such beautiful things in this life such as music like this, is that there is an opposition to everything. To Bad. Thanks for making such a wonder and amazment available to all who enjoy the sweet things of life. Totally awesome song and arrangement. God Bless.

  • This is rape! Finlandia has nothing to do with "God" Finlandia was written by Sibelius to give spirit to Finlands independence. Nothing more nothing less.

  • This hymn brings me such peace and joy whenever I listen to it. I know that my Heavenly Father, my God, is with me. His Son died for me and rose again so that I might conquer death. The Holy Ghost lives in me and all three bring me everlasting peace. I am happier than I ever could be.

  • This is the Finlandia hymn of Finnish people. It was first written for us Finns who had a faint, but determined dream of becoming independent.

  • Can you imagine the heavenly choir.....man thats going top be awsome to hear praises sung to our Father like that

  • the spirit is strong with this one!

  • My high school's alma mater uses the same tune

  • "Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side. With patience, bear the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; in every change, He, faithful, will remain."

  • They are so amazing

  • wow

  • i'm being baptized mormon by the end of the month<3 i am so excited.

  • @xnadinex321 congratulations it was the best decision I ever made!!

  • @xnadinex321 2Co 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

2Co 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

mate, baptism doesn't save you. Mormonism doesn't save you. Only repentance and faith in Jesus Christ can save you.

  • @SuperMcbatman well with mormonism i can repent, and have faith in jesus christ so from the words you have just spoken, i can be saved. and that to me sounds like being mormon does save me, and you don't have to agree but i know it's true.

  • @xnadinex321 The Bible says that water baptism doesn't wash away your sins xnadinex. Only repentance and faith in Christ can. You don't add anything to the cross :D I appreciate your sincerity.

  • @SuperMcbatman Baptism is not the only requirement, but it is one of the steps (John 3:5), Christ himself even set the example being baptised by John the Baptist. When someone is baptised they take upon themselves the name of Jesus Christ, promise to keep His commandments, and to serve Him to the end. It's kind of like Elija telling Naaman to wash in the river, don't have so much pride you don't do it.

  • @psylocke757 As far as I know God will be the Judge and by what measure you judge so also shall you be judged!

  • @SuperMcbatman That screams of hate acid my friend. Why not be happy that he has found something in his life that makes him happy. I am sure he would be excited for you if you could find something in life to make you happy.

It seems as though you need to find a little more Christ like love in your life. Maybe some Charity hmmm?

  • @amy1584 eh? Amy, this guy is trying to find salvation in the Mormon church - which there is none. For there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved - Jesus Christ of course. Being baptised into the Mormon church doesn't save anyone. Christ loved the people enough to point out the error of false doctrine, and to point people to him which is what I am trying to do. Thanks for your comment. Sincerely. But I think your views of the Lord Jesus Christ are a bit warped

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperMcbatman The "Mormon Church" which is named "The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints proclaims that salvation cometh only through Jesus Christ alone and following Him and HIS commandments. Thank yhou.

  • @SuperMcbatman Go to mormon.org if you want to know how similar we all are.

    God bless you.

  • @xnadinex321 it was the best decision of my life

  • @susannah1ful It isn't the Finnish national anthem, but there are many in Finland who think that it should be. an interesting sidelight is that the it was taken as the national anthem of Biafra, which tried to break away from Nigeria in the late 1960s.

  • Este himno lo escuchaba mucho en mi misión, era muy especial, ahora que estoy en casa, me acuerdo de mi área y de mi compañera y de ese hermoso espíritu que reinaba en esa casa!!!!!!! Ahhhh Rivas!!!!!!!!

  • This is a hymn that has given me alot of comfort and assurance that the Lord is in control and that I just need to trust Him and have faith in Him. As I do my best and do my part, He will always do His part and take care of the rest.

  • check out the story behind this song...its amazing and very humbling.

  • Very said... but wonderful

  • this song brings me so much comfort :)

  • Hauntingly beautiful. I believe this song is the national anthem of Finland.

  • A good example of how a patriotic secular tune can be transformed into a very religious experience. This is perhaps not robbery, but some form of exploitation this most certainly is. I would be happy if this had become a national anthem for Finland.

  • This song offers profound comfort to any troubled soul. It transcends all cultures and languages. Heavenly in essence, from start to finish.

    A real gem.

  • Im not mormon but i find this choir amazing

  • google Doe's Account, its mindblowing

  • de zuiverheid van dit koor trekt mij aan

  • this is a rendition from heaven. the mormon choir could never be bettered in this greatest lovely spirit of Christianly blessings.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG <3

it touched my heart this week especially the first verse and now i cant stop singing it in my head or out loud :) love it love it love it.. the tabernacle choir is awesome!!! and david archuleta sings it beautifully as well :)

  • as usual, the tabernacle sounds so much better in person :) this is good, though

  • I am a big fan of Mack's, but he did a diservice to Sibelius by giving his sound in the arrangement to something so beautiful as Finlandia, and even though I thing Come thou fount is a great arrangement, it don't fly with real classics like Finlandia. I am still a Wilberg fan.

  • I think the singing is wonderful and the orchestra is wonderful, however the arrangement is too syrupy, and is a far cry from the elegance that Sibelius wrote. It is almost cheap theater music, but I think it is mainly immaturity of the arranger.

  • I Agree. This song is nice but I've heard much better versions.

  • @yamaho5

    Interesting perspective ...

I find Mack Wilberg's arrangement of this hymn to be the most beautiful version I have ever heard.

I suppose it is all in the eyes of the beholder.

  • Those redcoats sound beautiful.

  • me encanta la musica del coro, puedo sentir un fuerte espiritu y una trankila maravillosa

  • A mí también, es muy hermoso y me encanta escuchar las armonías.

  • Very gripping. The harmonies of the accompaniment are so rich.
