"Debating creationists on the topic of evolution is rather like trying to play chess with a pigeon — it knocks the pieces over, craps on the board, and flies back to its flock to claim victory." -Scott D. Weitzenhoffer
Like Shakespeare's Macbeth this story is "based on" fact and any thinking person can research the actual events. But isn't it pleasurable to watch Spencer Tracey, Frederic March and Gene Kelly offer such terrific performances? I doubt Henry V gave the Agicourt speech but I love hearing Olivier deliver it.
@incrediblehulkmovies I don't quite know how it happened in real life but I do know he knew it was coming ,he had been persuaded to break the law in order to bring the issue out into the open. From what I hear scopes was largely secondary to the trial once the defence and prosecution arived in town.
For those of you who commented that you have read the actual Court Transcripts and confirm that this movie is based on fact are LIARS!
.
NOTHING in this movie is based on the facts. This movie was a FRAUD!
.
The Scene where Scopes is in prison and was hit in the face with a bottle by an angry mob NEVER HAPPENED.
.
The Scene where Bryan went ballistic and shouted and raved in the court room NEVER HAPPENED. It was Darrow who raved and ranted against Bryan for over an hour. READ the Transcripts.
Yes it's just a fanciful tale, very loosely written around the Scopes case, but it's a complete work of fiction. It has as much basis in fact as Hurricane The Ruben Carter Story which was one gigantic fairy tale .
This is a 1960s Hollywood movie and not a historical review of the facts. Watch the film as a background introduction and read the several historical texts to get an idea of what took place.
I must say that I HAVE done my research. And the characters in the movie are based on the actual characters in real life. However they have added some and manipulated others. Rachel Brown, the Stevens boy.... these guys are fictional. Even Brady who represents William Jennings Bryan actually defended himself much better than depicted in the movie. I have read actual court transcripts of what went on. And even more... the whole thing was set up! lol. Scopes was a volunteer case for the trial. :D
I've read the comments and seen the movie... I have to say that this movie is based on fact and a true story... dangerous? No. Enlightening? Absolutely!
I'm a catholic and believe in God, but that's not the point... this is a good movie about our past, in this country.

This movie is fiction...
...and dangerous (because people will use this preconceived idea and "first mention", and superimpose that on creation ministries and see them as mean, abusive, and stupid.)
...Falsehood maliciousness, and slander is NOT how we get along.
"Inherit The Wind" = perhaps the greatest film ever (esp. the (utterly brilliant) 1988 re-make)
AKA "How to Pwn a Fund[amental]i[st]"

I can't believe they just walked into the school house and arrested him. Could they really do that?

@incrediblehulkmovies Yes, they absolutely can IF AND ONLY IF they have probable cause, depending on the charge/crime in question.

Over all.... Great Movie.... but entirely theatrical in performance. It wasn't designed to be a documentary. Which is ok... I liked the movie anyway.

"Based on a true story" but 99% fiction.
It is a grand story though.

@TheJomogogo Not so much fiction as you'd think. The transcripts for Darrow's testimonies are as much poetry as those of Inherit the Wind.
