At first I was thinking "who are these jive turkeys with well-written music" then Dave Douglas starts to solo and I realized that these are some evil motherfuckers.
cioè, io lo vad a sentire, vi rendete conto? ho gia preso i biglietti per il concerto a roma su listicket, non potevo perdermi dave! strordinario jazz!
.....i don´tknow....i dont like Dave, his sound is ugly......his style is boring...pentatonic after pentatonic....he sound like a truck....some guy told that you had to be a no ears musician to like this.....and he won a Grammy....SHIT!!!!!
There is very little pentatonic sound in Douglas' solo dude, I don't know where you learned the word pentatonic but it certainly wasn't at music school. As for needing to be a "no ears musician", no man. Everyone has their own taste. At least this has some musical credibility, not like, for example, Bitches Brew (which far too many people say is "Miles' best album") ... As for Dave, he's one of the hottest trumpeters out there right now ... even if you don't like the music, his sound is great
well....modal if you like, and yes, he play a lot of pentatonic, but OUTSIDE!!!! , maybe you need some lessons on jazz harmony , and please.......Miles was on his time a good one,at 2:21.....I HATE THOSE INFERNAL HORRIBLE NOTES!!!! but ok you have beautiful music taste....MMMM .........
I have been a Dave Douglas fan for 15+ years...caught him live only 4 times though. He is in a class all by himself...not as a player as a composer and band leader incredible. thanks for posting!!
i agree. Those realbook guys aren't even cute...i had read an article that depicted Dave as an antagonist to Wynton. i heard this and thought, what so radical about this? IDK, sounds like the difference between the republicans and democrats!
Adult contemporary easy listening, as much watered down as anything Wynton has done IMHO, nowhere near the balls of Filles,,,,,,, good players though.
You gotta move the art somewhere lest we all become Wynton clones (not a bad goal, but maybe people want to say something for themself rather than spitting out the "right answers" for test day all the time. I think these guys are saying something different, but that is no reason to consider them hacks or unfamiliar with tradition. You're deaf if you think these guys don't understand tradition.
@soursourapples I'm definitely not saying Wynton is a clone. What I'm saying is that Wynton is a standard of playing that MANY try to clone. I love Wynton's playing, I don't love the gazillion others out there that just spew out Wynton's ideas as their own.
GOTIRES-- your philosophy is the same as louis calling parker chinese music, Miles degrading Ornette's music, or the Wynton legacy of poopooing anybody outside of the Nawleans scene. So what if it isn't what you've heard before?!
JAZZ MASTERS Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellignton, Miles Davis, Charlie Parke,Thelonious Monk,Coltrane,Mccoy Tyner,Ben webster,Lester Young,Wynton Marsalis,Herbie Hancock,Dizzy Gillespie,Scott Joplin,King oliver,Dizzy Gillespie to name a few .WHAT DO THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON?
The whole set up looks so sterile and contrived. Its not really a live performance in front of a crowd. You can sense a lack of spontaneity but I can assure you that this band (now with McCaslin on sax) is smoking hot. Dont judge a band or player until you actually see them A video is still not a live performance.
Ageed... just go check out the performances from the JazzBaltica festival a couple months ago--not to mention the Jazz Standard and Meaning & Mystery albums.
i agree again, the solo feels incomplete, but im not sure its intirely the players fault.....i feel there is a lack of responce from the rhythm section...if that makes sence? it may be because of the t.v broadcasting restraints....but however well them bassist and drummer conect, they still need to feel how the music is developing in solo sections, and i dont realy feel they enhance the solo....please shoot me down if you think im completely wrong...
It's music and freedom!!It's comments and oppinions like these that give cats and kids, future musicians complexs(if thats a word). Could he have ment to phrase his solo in the way he did? and if so it would have been the perfect solo for him, right? Come on guys put your technique and critique aside and enjoy what he's has to say! PEACE and BLESSINGS, G
I saw him live last year with the same rhythm section, but a different guy on sax. I think Uri Caine, James Genus, and Clarence Penn really make this band. This video doesn't do Dave Douglas justice at all. I completely agree that his solo is lacking.
theres no question that douglas plays bags and bags of trumpet. you can hear the huge miles influence coming through in the length and direction of the phrasing, and the freddie chops and BITE. just feels like theres something missing...

The two are directly related. People critique what they do not understand or cannot play.

Dave douglas is a killer trumpet player. I dont care for his way abstract style but I guess jazz is like that. Give me Terrance Blanchard anyday.
