I have one I just bought, it was cleaned, but no scratches, weight checked out, magnet tests checked out, I am having trouble with the luster test, getting a little cartwheeling but not much, but it has been cleaned. Another thing. When I flip it, it has the sound of silver, but ever so slightly higher pitched than another one I have, but the other one is heavily circulated, any reason a heavily circulated morgan might have a slightly lower pitch when flipped?
@ben191209 you never never clean coins. it ruins the numismatic value. i guess its ok to clean something that has no value or just bullion value. example if you have a silver bullion bar thats just worth the metal then i think its ok or a coin thats not worth anything. other than that never ever clean a valuable coin. buy the whiteman 2012 red book you will learn loads about coins and prices from that. hope this helps.
I own a pawn shop, this kid just walked in with 5 Morgan dollars. Before looking at them, I asked waht he wanted. He had no idea, so I said ill give you 10 a pop of they are real and he was more than happy to get that. He said he had more, and pulled out over 90 more!!!! I almost jumped out the freakin window, thinking I was going to get 95 morgans @ 10 a pop. However, when I looked at them every single one was a CC, they stuck to a magnet, and only weighed 14grams. DARNNNNNNNNN
I might add that his method of the cart wheel only works on XF to Mint condition Morgans. A Poor or Fine condition coin with decades of ware will not have enough luster left to shine.
Just test it with a rare earth magnet. The fakes from China are made of steel so they will be attracted to the magnetic like glue. I have about a dozen Chinese fakes and the the magnet is very hard to get off them.
Those fakes are pretty damn good. There is no way that the governments of China and the USA don't know about this shit. It is in the best interest of The Federal Reserve for this nonsense to go on.
China is not our new master. We have the same old master who is getting more and more bold as our collective leash tightens.
The Chinese people are slaves who the Chinese government has leased out to the corporatist and banking elite to drive profits up.
You have done a great job with this video and a great service to your fellow collectors. I am an American in Germany who is preparing for the upcoming "Owe"bama Hyperinflation + crash of the dollar (the Federal Reserve as "Federal" as Federal Express will keep printing). I make regular bullion purchases and usually buy 90% junk silver, had 1 problem w/ a morg. (I stay away from Morgans + rarely buy peace). I am pretty sure the half dollars I have are real. Now I need to buy a scale + calipers.
Any indication of what these coins are made of? I presume they pass the magnet test, but perhaps if we knew what materials they are using, a positive reagent test could also be used to detect them. =^[.]^=
The scale is the way to go. It seems that luster is a tough one because some of us want to buy at different coin grades. What should we do if we want to buy lower grade coins. I noticed on some of the fakes that there are tarnish marks on the rims. Agggh those fakers and belly achers.
@PukkPukk Could you also possibly please elaborate. I have been buying half dollar kennedy's from 1964 and Benjamin Franklin half dollars. The coin grades are very poor generally and the coins have been heavily circulated. Is it normal for all of the lustre to be gone in some cases? I will definitely have to buy a scale and calipers but maybe in the meantime you could help me about the lustre. Thanks in advance for your answer.
Great video ! I have been suspecting one of my morgan dollars as a fake. After watching this video, It has failed the cartwheel test compared to the others. It also appears thinner than the others and feels lighter in weight too.
I am a coin collector who confirmed this with one of the sellers via email. I asked if they were stamped, he quickly said no feel free to purchase them! These counterfeits will eventually destroy the coin market. Where is the CIA
I use gloves handling my silver coins, as the acids on the fingers will leave marks. Handling a new Silver Eagle for just a moment with bare fingers will ruin it bringing top value to a collector, something I have found out to my cost. Handling ruins the fine 'white' lustre coat that unhandled coins often have, keaving finger prints. You can clean the finger prints off, but that also removes some of the beautiful lustre. It's just good practise really, the gloves are very cheap to buy.
@nashnosh Can you please answer this question for me. I buy half dollar silver Benjamin Franklins and John F. Kennedy from respectable dealers on ebay from Germany. I buy one or two at a time (It is extremely rare that I buy more than 2-3 from a single dealer). I have noticed that some of the Benjamin Franklins that were circulated quite a bit can be dark colored and not have any lustre. Is this normal for a heavily circulated 90% silver coin? Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
This is very good... I already have my scale, all Im waiting is for the my coin to arrive, they will be in a big shit if they tried to sell me a fake coin now... Thanks!!! post some more coins.

Another good way is find a picture of a coin graded by one of the top graders on Ebay and compare your coin to that one.

At what popular places could I buy a scale like that please respond!

@ipodtester1 Check Ebay - but use them as a guide, how they compare with other real Morgans is more important that their absolute accuracy.

Great video! One of the best demonstrations on teaching others about the real film layer which creates the cartwheel.

A question for you. why the gloves? Why kind of gloves are those that you use. I handle my silver after I wash my hands. Am I in error?
