From what I found out, it's considered more of a separate part of the Romance (Latin) Languages apart from the langues D'oc & D'oil (modern French). The languages of France such as Arpitan are different from French, Italian & Spanish. Arpitans live in east-central France, along with Savoyards, Jurassians, Auvergnats & Lemosins are distinct cultures for centuries, and once were separate kingdoms until the French revolution. +

Savoyards and Jurassians (and Lyonneses, and Valdôtens, and Bressans, and Dauphineses, etc.) ARE some etnies of Arpitania :)
