That's it... go get them John! Very underrated director... But that's the way it is, great artists who are ready to break conventions never get their approval in their lifetime.
the absolute sadness of Hollywood and particulary audiences (who are the most to blame for the lack of success of his movies) is that John had to 'manufacture' this interview. i.e. nobody was seeing this movie, so he literally organised this interview in the middle of the night calling a crew and the actors down to get some attention for it-he literally rang up and said 'do you want to do an interview with us'
It really sucks that the wrong name is placed on his face but watching gena rowlands reaction in the mirror is powerful, you can see how much she loved him and frankly i'm taken with him too, what's your take on cassavetes?
This should, no, MUST be shown EVERYDAY in every commissary of every studio in Hollywood. In every home of every talentless, overpaid, executive in Hollywood. In every film school in the country.
Wise words from one of the greatest directors and actor of American Cinema.
that was great, really loved it. as he said, the movie WAS inspiring and his words REMAIN inspiring. thank you. would love to convince a fellow teacher to show this.
OPENING NIGHT is a truly amazing film! I was glued to the screen for the whole 2.5 hours, and just felt electrified and exhilarated after it all ended. Pretty much all of his movies make me feel like that, though, but especially that one. His directorial work contains so much confidence, emotion, enthusiasm, subtlety, intelligence, and genuine fascination with humanity. I wish he was alive to see what an impact his work has made, although he's still hugely underrated.
Cassavetes is God! He is so right on in his assessment. And it is still valid today! He would be railing against the corporate bullshit that is film/media today. I am grateful that these clips exist to inspire the rest of us that can see and handle the truth. Did you also notice how Gena just stared so lovingly at him while he spoke? You can see her over his shoulder in the mirror. What a great team. I love them both.
I've seen 2 of his films and am about to watch "Opening Night". I have never agreed with any man more on society. I feel the same way. Genius. He would hate the days we live in now. Probably turning over in his grave now!
i wish i could find a stash of every interview with cassavetes .. so sad they took off of youtube his interview on dick cavett show promoting husbands ... that was incredibly inspiring .. but of course proper ownership of a clip from the 70s is more important than inspiring people around the world
What an affirmation. Youtube is the greatest thing ever and you, NotFilmSchool, are a reason why. This clip should be shown in every class or workshop that deals with the creative process. Having the courage to express yourself to the fullest extent without regard for anything but the pursuit of truth through the expression itself. Believing in yourself while you do it. This is invigorating, inspiring stuff!
What would be the best Cassavetes film to start with? I was thinking about that box set, but it's too expensive. This film? - Faces, Woman Under the Influence, Shadows, Chinese Bookie? Thanks.
thanks for posting this. Jc literally changed my life with his films, and more importantly his philosophical positions and questions that he raises. I will like anything you can find and upload about him, my personal favorite film is Loves Sreams.
I realize that youtube doesn't allow for live sports, tv shows and movies stream though stream episodes [dot] net truly does. I highly urge you guys especially #VIDEOPOSTERID# to go look it over!
I really have always admired John alot..and he's right about TV. I threw mine out years ago. But jeeez..he made quite a bit of money from that object of his contempt. Plus, I think he's pretty toasted right now.
Yes, Mr. Cassavetes was and is amazing. Corageous, brilliant, passionate, committed, talented and dedicated. This interview shows his frustration at the system better than any clip I've ever seen, and time has borne out his anger: movies have become unwatchable, and OPENING NIGHT disappeared without a trace, only to have a few revivals after the director's death. He's right about his own film: OPENING NIGHT is a masterpiece.
This is one absolutely beautiful moment with Cassavetes! He really is a prophet, and dynamic. I would have done anything to help work on one of his films, every one is a masterpiece for me.
One of my favorite directors, like it or not, at least he has the guts to stand for his convictions, with no political correctness and no corporatist hypocrisy, and that deserves respect!
Oh crap, I lost it with Cassel cracking up and Gazzara lighting up his cigar and laughing. Rowlands looking with awe at this demi-god she happened to marry and make a creative life with.
i showed his last film -the tempest- to my 16yr old son who brings up scenes months later - calibanos, new york new york, show me the magic, etc..he made great movies right to the very end.
In 1975 I became TV free. My girlfriend and I hosted a card tournament among our friends and the prize was our TV. One of the best decisions of my life.
I'm tv free and have been since the height of the Bush administration disapointed with the media and the bland choices of entertainment on it. In 1975 tv was good in my opinion but I have a friend Ken who stopped watching in 1982. When he came to pick me up one day the tv was on and he was shocked to see the advertisement and the flashes of images on the screen during a program.
While I agree with his views on Hollywood and television, Cassavetes was a self-aggrandizing prick and, at least in my opinion, a terrible ham as an actor.
Do you believe Cassavetes was a "self-aggrandizing prick" solely because he liked his style of filmmaking over the mainstream style and was vocal about it, or is there more to it?

Yeah---Cassavetes. He kind of makes everyone else--today and yesterday--look like a "sissy." Well, they can't all be like John. A flame, a wild flower, a knife through the darkness.
GOD BLESS JOHN CASSAVETES!!! Thank you so much for posting this. It's ironic he said this 30 plus years ago and it still applies today, even more so. Michael Bay should watch this clip and then go jump off a fuckin bridge out a shame.
