  • This rant is great. Also, I can see him being a real asshole if he's had only a little more to drink than this.

  • Amen.

  • lol guy is really pissed off and those hollywood suckers. i still have to watch this one, faces was a masterpiece

  • Lyrics please..!! necesito poder traducir esto al Español !!!, saludos desde Chile!

  • What an intelligent, passionate, handsome, sexy man.

  • what film are they talking about?

  • @savvas350 Opening Night

  • @savvas350 HUSBANDS i think, great movie.

  • I bet Gena jumped his bones immediately after this press conference.

  • .. I'm gonna get The Duke and John Cassavetes and Lee Marvin and Sam Peckinpah and a case of whiskey ....

  • @KenWelsh77 ....weee've got the bombs, OKAY!?!

  • Didn't his son make that Notebook shit?

  • @koenan1 He did, but his daughter Xan made "Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession" which you should check out.

  • He's a genius but he's still kinda crazy

  • How could someone possibly dislike this?

  • This is a good example of why I love John.

  • Poor John's head would explode if he were around today.

  • Brilliant Greek director

  • The best.

  • I work in television. He's right. He was right then, and even more now.

After watching this, I should quit my job and do something meaningful with my life.

  • That's it... go get them John! Very underrated director... But that's the way it is, great artists who are ready to break conventions never get their approval in their lifetime.

  • Thanx so much for posting. I loved all of John Cassavete films.

He was a brilliant directer. I admired him very much..

  • Vincent Gallo is my cassavettes

  • He's totally right. There is no better movie. It's a miraculous movie.

  • John was so cute! Are there nude photos of John?

  • right on JOHN!!!!

  • Saw Opening Night yesterday evening- truly amazing. Going to look for his other films now

  • the absolute sadness of Hollywood and particulary audiences (who are the most to blame for the lack of success of his movies) is that John had to 'manufacture' this interview. i.e. nobody was seeing this movie, so he literally organised this interview in the middle of the night calling a crew and the actors down to get some attention for it-he literally rang up and said 'do you want to do an interview with us'

  • Now there is a Man who gives a mother fucking damn! Shit, he has balls!

  • John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands: Coolest couple in history of cinema!!!

  • It really sucks that the wrong name is placed on his face but watching gena rowlands reaction in the mirror is powerful, you can see how much she loved him and frankly i'm taken with him too, what's your take on cassavetes?

  • All students of film should see this.

  • This should, no, MUST be shown EVERYDAY in every commissary of every studio in Hollywood. In every home of every talentless, overpaid, executive in Hollywood. In every film school in the country.

Wise words from one of the greatest directors and actor of American Cinema.

  • "this is a stupid town"....

  • Get the damn words off his wonderful face!

  • GENIUSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! RARE FKN THING TODAY

  • that was great, really loved it. as he said, the movie WAS inspiring and his words REMAIN inspiring. thank you. would love to convince a fellow teacher to show this.

  • OPENING NIGHT is a truly amazing film! I was glued to the screen for the whole 2.5 hours, and just felt electrified and exhilarated after it all ended. Pretty much all of his movies make me feel like that, though, but especially that one. His directorial work contains so much confidence, emotion, enthusiasm, subtlety, intelligence, and genuine fascination with humanity. I wish he was alive to see what an impact his work has made, although he's still hugely underrated.

  • The way Gena looks at him... Despite all the suffering, what a wonderful love story they had.

  • @kiasmus Why was there Suffering? Just wondering. I heard stuff but I dunno.

  • tv sucks ha the man was great.great ctor great director

  • Hey, why he has this letters in his face, that is REALLY disturbing. Please put this up again without that nonesense...PLEEEAAAASEEE

    mizzi

  • Cassavetes is God! He is so right on in his assessment. And it is still valid today! He would be railing against the corporate bullshit that is film/media today. I am grateful that these clips exist to inspire the rest of us that can see and handle the truth. Did you also notice how Gena just stared so lovingly at him while he spoke? You can see her over his shoulder in the mirror. What a great team. I love them both.

  • what's on the little dish in the foreground?

  • GOD OF FILM!

  • I've seen 2 of his films and am about to watch "Opening Night". I have never agreed with any man more on society. I feel the same way. Genius. He would hate the days we live in now. Probably turning over in his grave now!

  • i wish i could find a stash of every interview with cassavetes .. so sad they took off of youtube his interview on dick cavett show promoting husbands ... that was incredibly inspiring .. but of course proper ownership of a clip from the 70s is more important than inspiring people around the world

  • What an affirmation. Youtube is the greatest thing ever and you, NotFilmSchool, are a reason why. This clip should be shown in every class or workshop that deals with the creative process. Having the courage to express yourself to the fullest extent without regard for anything but the pursuit of truth through the expression itself. Believing in yourself while you do it. This is invigorating, inspiring stuff!

How do you not love this guy?

  • He talked for 7:00 mins straight:) I love him!

  • Amen!

  • Hell Yes! His words hold true today more than ever. I'm sick right now with all the crap that's out. Amen Cassavetes!

  • is Ed Mcmahon in the room?- that laugh after John says "television sucks!" haha

  • Who is Macdonald Cassavetes? Isn't it John?

  • @Johnnypt13

I'm guessing it was a guy who owned the video and decided to label the center of the screen.

  • @NotFilmSchool

It's really home video, direct cinema, cinema vérité. Even the name of the filmmaker is there!

But nice to be in here.

  • Why did people, not celebrities-they're too airheaded now-but why did people lose the ability to rant like this in the noughties?

    We need it back. Tonight.

  • Fucking priceless.

  • thanks for posting this. Jc literally changed my life with his films, and more importantly his philosophical positions and questions that he raises. I will like anything you can find and upload about him, my personal favorite film is Loves Sreams.

  • The best thing on Youtube.

  • Routine of tittilating + escapism + nothing = ROTTEN.

  • I realize that youtube doesn't allow for live sports, tv shows and movies stream though stream episodes [dot] net truly does. I highly urge you guys especially #VIDEOPOSTERID# to go look it over!

    John Cassavetes - "Television Sucks!"

  • I really have always admired John alot..and he's right about TV. I threw mine out years ago. But jeeez..he made quite a bit of money from that object of his contempt. Plus, I think he's pretty toasted right now.

  • inspiración pura... gracias por compartir este video

  • thanks everyone for your comments. it's good to know his words are still connecting!

  • Very inspiring man.

  • Powerful shit man!!!!!!

  • he got me.i m in.

  • Yes, Mr. Cassavetes was and is amazing. Corageous, brilliant, passionate, committed, talented and dedicated. This interview shows his frustration at the system better than any clip I've ever seen, and time has borne out his anger: movies have become unwatchable, and OPENING NIGHT disappeared without a trace, only to have a few revivals after the director's death. He's right about his own film: OPENING NIGHT is a masterpiece.

  • An unconditional artist.

  • I watch this everyday for inspiration and motivation. Thank you, John!

  • This is one absolutely beautiful moment with Cassavetes! He really is a prophet, and dynamic. I would have done anything to help work on one of his films, every one is a masterpiece for me.

  • standing ovation.

  • Great honest director, great films. Too bad he's not around anymore. Jesus, why didn't I meet this guy when he was still alive...

  • One of my favorite directors, like it or not, at least he has the guts to stand for his convictions, with no political correctness and no corporatist hypocrisy, and that deserves respect!

  • Oh crap, I lost it with Cassel cracking up and Gazzara lighting up his cigar and laughing. Rowlands looking with awe at this demi-god she happened to marry and make a creative life with.

    Absolutely awesome.

RIght on my brother, JOHN. Amen and hallelujah!!!

  • " Perfect love casts out all fear"......feelin it JC....

  • Dammit, John, we really need you right now, maybe more than ever.

  • John Cassavetes -- one-of-a-kind.

Too bad they are all still just a bunch of "sissy's."

  • ... That's what it's like being sick of stupidity around - John was open and brave, no compromise... And that is why his films are beautiful.

  • Wonderful interview

  • i love you john..thanks a lot for you art..listening to you in this interview..man you are amazing..grazie per sempre

  • Thank you so much for uploading this, it's wonderful.

  • A Call to us all.

  • Great man, great filmmaker way ahead of his time.

  • Brave people, brave man. Thank you John ... Thank you for posting this.

  • Gotta love Seymour Cassel's hearty laugh at the end.

  • This is perfect. Cassavetes was a Great man~! True Filmmaker!

  • I love this. John Cassavetes the father of independent cinema.

  • i showed his last film -the tempest- to my 16yr old son who brings up scenes months later - calibanos, new york new york, show me the magic, etc..he made great movies right to the very end.

  • Perfect.

  • Cassavetes name across his face and all over this clip totally ruins it! What a waste!!

  • this is a beautiful moment with a beautiful man

  • One of my favorite directors.

His opinions are quite strong and powerful. Love his independent spirit as a human being and a filmmaker as well.

  • In 1975 I became TV free. My girlfriend and I hosted a card tournament among our friends and the prize was our TV. One of the best decisions of my life.

  • I'm tv free and have been since the height of the Bush administration disapointed with the media and the bland choices of entertainment on it. In 1975 tv was good in my opinion but I have a friend Ken who stopped watching in 1982. When he came to pick me up one day the tv was on and he was shocked to see the advertisement and the flashes of images on the screen during a program.

  • TIPTON340, we pulled the plug because the happy talk news format had just started. It disgusted us so we made the decision and stuck to it.

  • Damn straight. Cassavettes isn't one of my favorites, but I admire him so much for his brazeness and his audacity.

  • truth

  • Yeah, and how many films have you made, prick? LOL!!!

  • Do you believe Cassavetes was a "self-aggrandizing prick" solely because he liked his style of filmmaking over the mainstream style and was vocal about it, or is there more to it?

  • Cassavetes was a fucking prophet! Thanks for the upload. If he had won an Oscar he'd probably call everyone there cunts and slap whoever gave him the award. Though I agree with Sean Penn's clone quote, he was a sissy too. He pussyfooted around making she's de-lovely with JC because of money and he also wanted Madonna to star in it with him.

  • shame about the super can it get bigger???

  • Like Sean Penn joked about his late friend, John Cassavetes, can we clone this guy? "The blessing of expressing yourself." Breathtaking.

  • Preach it John, preach it.

  • All of you guys are SO RIGHT ON!

  • Yeah---Cassavetes. He kind of makes everyone else--today and yesterday--look like a "sissy." Well, they can't all be like John. A flame, a wild flower, a knife through the darkness.

  • GOD BLESS JOHN CASSAVETES!!! Thank you so much for posting this. It's ironic he said this 30 plus years ago and it still applies today, even more so. Michael Bay should watch this clip and then go jump off a fuckin bridge out a shame.

  • I like i rate i favourite....

  • Thanks for uploading this - the man should have been paid just for living.

  • Beautifully said my friend. They don't make them like this anymore.
