Trust me on this one, That is Friction gear spring noise. A brick placed on camshaft with a bolt/nut. U need to replace those to newer version. It was faulty manufactured on all KLDE KLZE until 1996.
Yes it was the timing belt tensioner, i could push in the pin with my thumb all the way, i changed all three belts and the pulleys, put a new tensioner in it and the car runs like a charm, no noise what so ever, and it doesnt stall anymore when i turn the vents off must have been related to this problem ;)
Changed the timing belt tensioner (complete set with all three betls pullies etc. 100 USD on ebay) which i could squeeze with my thumb, the timing belt pulleys, both alternator and oil pump belts and the pcv valve which i broke while working on the car, the tensioner with the pin on top (45 USD on ebay) did the trick, new belt sits nice and tight, no more noise, nice consistent idle, 152400 miles and counting again :)
