Back to the Future Delorean DMC-12 vs Duke of Hazard General Lee Charger, what a great mashup! We all know the Charger would win, but for looks, the Delorean easily wins!
Its my Dream car easily! Wish I had one with a Ford GT Motor in that bad boy with a Borla exhaust and even a simple Koni racing suspension kit! That car with its low weight would easily own a 911 Turbo!
With all that stainless steal on the Delorean they were never meant to take off very fast... but they do have a nice top speed =) not to mention the style makes it well worth driving... just not in a drag race lol
They have extremely awesome handling, but honestly I agree with my dad, way to low powered engine for the price of that thing. DeLoreans are still cool as heck though!
Wow, A Delorean actually went a quarter mile without a breakdown, this must be something of a record. Awesome car though, I hope to get one shortly (need to sell my Porsche 928 first) and when I do I will be the coolest aging man in Scotland!!
Oh man... I frickin love that General Lee Charger from the Dukes of Hazzard. Just looking at it gives me an awesome feeling like I'm a little kid again watching that show air live on TV.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old PRV Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps EFi and tank clean and rustfree
The Delorean is a kick ass cruiser car but it's clearly no race car. The car was designed for gas mileage not performance. Deloreans get 28 mpg with the 5 speed manual transmission. You can add more power to them by turbo charging them or getting a Stage 2 upgrade from the new DMC company. But yea this race was not a good idea. I guess someone wanted the 2 icons to race each other.
lol the delorean like got a length head start and the charger still beat it...I know I know, the DeLorean's got a weak powerplant and all, but I still think it's funny.
As I understand it from someone else here that the driver of the General Lee agreed to let the DeLorean go first by 1 1/2 car lengths as this was a friendly race.
unfortunatly it didnt...correct me if I'm wrong, but the DMC 12 only produces 130 rear wheel Horse Power, and the Charger is some where in the 300s I believe.
Deloreans are beautiful cars. Just because there not the ultimate haul ass cars doesn't mean there not great. I like to get one with a stage 2 performance upgrade from DMC and a Eibach suspension. That would be a lot of fun I'm sure
and when you see one for real, oh man they look twice as good, really nice stance on the road,,, who cares about the performance. that can easily be taken care of...
i didn't see a Mr. Fusion. i just hope he remembered to pack extra plutonium cuz we know what happens once that baby hits 88 miles per hour...we see some serious shit...
With 197 hp in a 2800 pound car it would probably keep up a little with the Charger, but not for very long. The Charger had a 440 big block with 375 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 5 seconds I believe. The Charger would still win. I don't care Delorean's still kick ass though.
DMC of Houston is developing a Stage 3 upgrade with 238 horsepower. James Espy VP of DMC said that the prototype has been built and will debuting probably next spring at auto shows. Not sure if they are going to use the original engine. The Stage 2 upgrade starts at $6,000 dollars apx for an add on to a current motor. For a completely new rebuilt motor with the Stage 2 upgrade it's about $7,000.
The Stage 2 Engine has no turbos. The 2.8 liter PRV Engine is completely overhauled and reworked to withstand the power upgrades. New headers, cat converters, and new exhaust system are added. There was two twin turbo Deloreans built by Legend Industries, but the company went under before the project really saw the light of day. The manager of DMC of Florida has one of them I believe.
also a lot of critisism levelled at the DMC comes from the restrictions imposed by the US government. Restricted to 85 mph 130hp etc.
Here in the UK we have the 170HP unrestricted version with of course right hand drive and that gorgeous black interior. much closer to JDL's original vision.
Actually considering its stainless steel build/ reletively large engine and the fact it is an 80's car. a delorean is a very light car. it weighs around 1200KG thats a little over a tonne, many cars on the road today weigh much more than this. Especially american sports cars.
It is the most beutifull and futuristic car ever constructed, bar none.
When James Espy was talking about carberators, he was talking about the cars made before the Delorean. The Delorean was one of the earliest cars to use electronic fuel injection. My 1982 BMW 320I had electronic fuel injection similar to a Deloreans. If Delorean's had a carberator you would of seen it on top of the engine with a air filter instead of the plastic cover that says DMC on top
2800 pounds doesn't make it a light car?? I dont think you know what your talking about. A delorean is not an application that would benifet from boost, not to mention how ridiculous it would look. Its a carburated motor, your makng yourself sound ridiculous
why is it all over the internet where deloreans are involved and comments can be left theres clearly one person, no doubt its you; saying you recon bricklins are better - great - give it a rest for god sake! its obviously the same person over and over
A DeLorean in a 1/4 mile race... They weren't built for 1/4 racing. They're geared for top end. Let's redo that from a rolling 60 to 120 MPH... Now let's see what happens.
A twin turbo DMC can have up to 200 hp. It depends on how much boost you have. And because of the car's light weight it can do 0-60 in 6 seconds. That's on par with a 1968 Mustang GT 390 like Bullitt's. Deloreans only weigh about 2800 pounds mainly beacuase of the fiberglass body under the stainless panels. Deloreans aren't race cars or muscle cars. The deserve a lot more respect that they get.
Sure the Charger is faster but I'll take a Delorean with a Stage 2 engine and peformance suspension. Especially with gas being 3.21 a gallon. Deloreans are cool they just have to be modified a bit. No offense to the Charger. That was the best car Chrysler ever made.
6,000? That's rare? There were only 11 1971 Hemicuda convertibles built. That is rare! I have seen a lot of original 454 Chevelles and big-block Mopars at the weekly car gathering I go to. I also saw a Delorean there about one month ago.
Yeah, a twin turbo Delorean... what would that bring its horsepower up to? 180 maybe? ;-)
Yeah, like a 130-hp Delorean is going to have a higher top speed than that 330-425 hp (depending on what engine it has) Charger! And Chargers handle quite well. I've always considered the Delorean a joke; that's probably why real cars like Charger R/Ts, Hemicudas, 454 Chevelles, etc are worth a lot more.
European design and US emissions regulations is what killed the DeLorean. The standard "original" engine is a 2.7 V6 originally stencilled by (hear hear) Maserati, only the Maserati powerplant had DOHC and well over 200bhp, whereas the DeLorean (as the stock standard Peugeot motor) only OHC and 170 bhp. Add some serious emissions regulations in the US and power went down to 130 bhp. Add that the standard "dogleg" 5-speed was replaced by a 3-speed autobox. The DMC looks faster than it moves...
DeLorean has an engine from peugeout, citroen and so on, the stock engine is weak. John DeLorean tried to install the turbo engine, but he became a bankrupt.
I've heard DeLorean was involved with drug smugling and hence no investors would ever lend him money. He planned a faster and more powerful version of the Delorean but that never happened.Still thanks to Back to the Future the DeLorean is a cult car.
Guys do your research. The Delorean weighs 2700lbs (1225kgs) exactly the same as a Porsche 911. The engine is underpowered unless it is turbocharged (as many are). However, the death of the car has little to do with the car itself. There was a huge market slump in the early 80's which almost killed the Corvette as well as several sports car manufacturers. Trying to import a new luxury/sports car in 81 with little more than start up capital is what killed the DeLorean.
Its fiberglass with stainless panels which are heavy and expensive. This effectively doubled the weight and cost of the car, which killed it, because it was way over priced and slow. They are beautiful cars but poorly designed.
No, it's stainless steel. Look it up on wikipedia. I couldn't find the source right now, but I know for a fact that it's basically the same steel that's used in kitchen sinks.
The Delorean wa ssupposed to use a very light special fiberglass chassi, but the material was crap so they had to use standard FB instead. Together with the steel panels, the car has about the same wieght as a standard car would have. A real shame. But it's still a very aerodynamic car. A stock Delorean don't stand a chance against a stock Charger, but throw in a bigger engine and then it get's fun. Plus, i find it hard to think that the Charger can do corners as good as the Delorean.
Grade 304 Stainless Steel Panels, and they are lighrer than mild steel fenders. I own three Deloreans as a matter of fact, and 0-60 isn't lightning fast at 14 seconds, but looking cool, and geting 27-30mpg in a sports car nowadays with $3 gas is. When you can't afford the gas, doesn't matter how fast your 1/4 mile times are.
i think the delorean is too heavy to be a sports car. cauz of the steel they used for the body instead of carbon or stuff. if the DMC-12 has a powerful engine, it will cost much gasoline to power it. because of the weight.
huh? hmm Ive always known it has stainless steel bodypanels you might wantto recheck that. Dont askme to LOL becuase I live in Bellevue WA where the DMC Northwest facility is at and I go there and visit since I dont have one I go there time to time just to see when I want to.
only true but onyl the panels are steel plates but the frame is light weighted fiberglass, unlike other cars frames all metal and body panels all metel too. theres two versionsof the Deloreanone with a 130hp blah andone with a stage two taht hasa twin turbo init about 200hp

Wrong. Do some research. Aluminium body panels. I think it is still the only production car to ever have had an aluminium body.

You are an idiot Larry.

No wrong again mate it is stainless steel it was one of the only car to have stainless steel. know what your talking about before you post.
GlynnvanHeeswijk 4 years ago
see Laury79 it was built with stainless steel body panels
GlynnvanHeeswijk 4 years ago
Ok I was wrong. That will teach me to speak without researching first

i think the delorean is too heavy to be a sports car. cauz of the steel they used for the body instead of carbon or stuff. if the DMC-12 has a powerful engine, it will cost much gasoline to power it. because of the weight.
pixelinho 5 years ago
so so wrong. The Delorean used aluminium for its body which is lighter than steel "or stuff"
Laury79 5 years ago
So so wrong it wasn't aluminium but stainless steel.
GlynnvanHeeswijk 4 years ago
huh? hmm Ive always known it has stainless steel bodypanels you might wantto recheck that. Dont askme to LOL becuase I live in Bellevue WA where the DMC Northwest facility is at and I go there and visit since I dont have one I go there time to time just to see when I want to.

well the delorean gets 18 mpg so i cant imagine it suckin gas.
sgasdcockaroach 5 years ago
only true but onyl the panels are steel plates but the frame is light weighted fiberglass, unlike other cars frames all metal and body panels all metel too. theres two versionsof the Deloreanone with a 130hp blah andone with a stage two taht hasa twin turbo init about 200hp
Joefjc 4 years ago
I want both of these cars excpet i'd change the engine in the DElorean.
tlinds 5 years ago
yeah an upgrade twin turbo versionof it thats what I want.
Joefjc 4 years ago
The charger would have easily beaten the stock delorean due to the delorean not being much of a sports car as stock. sad to say but true.
spudman2798 5 years ago
the charger got a late start but Im sure it still won with a stock delorean only having 130 HP
franklinterrier 5 years ago
Yeah sucks LOL but why didnt they use a Stage 2 Delorean with a twin turbo? it has a 197hp it would be better, no?
Joefjc 4 years ago
But the charger is better than a Delorean. The charger is a raceing legend.

dreadatour 5 years ago
The '69 R/T Charger, of course. Much more HP on its drivetrain.
BalconX 5 years ago
the horsepower doesnt matter..... it's how its geared. ive seen a 500hp backyard camaro beat a 750hp 1 million dollar roadrunner.
