some guy i know tried to persuade me that the "million dollar band" at the university of alabama was better, saying they were worth a million dollars. he does not know good music
I was there in 2003 when they started doing this show-- they talked to us, the directors- and said they wanted to pick a really hard show that we could do once every year as a tradition- and it's stayed basically the same with a few tweaks since 2003... but I got to march it 1st and it was a bear to learn-- that flower-pass through after the spirals was really tight!! -- I've also marched in a Drum & Bugle Corps, but this remains the hardest college-level drill I've seen or attepted
Tennessee is my home state and I support our team 100% even when they have their bad years. Our football team might not be as good as we would like, but I feel like their year is going to be great and the marching band is AWESOME!!!
This should be on peoples list of 101 things to see before you die! Please can anyone advise me how to get tickets for Vols home matches? From an ardent college footy fan in the UK! Looking forward to the new season and hope the Vols can put some "pride" back in their game this year!
Thank you, VolFan78, for posting all these! Circle Drill is fantastic and people can never believe it. Thanks for posting all the different shows. Our band is fantastic!!!
It's a little disingenuous to say these are the most difficult formations ever performed in a Circle Drill. I was a member from 1988 to 1991 and I remember doing at least two shows as hard or harder than this a year. And those were all DIFFERENT shows. This has been the same show since 2005.
@JKM070 jesus man get a life, this has nothing to do with alabama. you've literally commented on every college football video on youtube. you are proof that bammers are the most obnoxious human beings alive.
A band that is still a band! I hope they never change a thing from the hats to the spats! :-) Definitely always has been and will be the PRIDE of the Southland!!! Go Vols!!!
This brings me back to the days I was in the Pride, the circle drills rock! But they're really dangerous to the uncoordinated lol. I love this band, they hold to tradition and a higher standard you don't see in many places anymore. It's refreshing. Go VOLS and go SEC!
such cleanliness! their turns are so snappy and crisp! i have great respect for the Pride ^_^ i wanna be in the Pride so bad! it's the only thing i regret about not going to UT
I love The Pride. I hope to march with them next year. I am the last to criticize, but I still think it sounded better when Welcome to Tennessee was in C concert. It's not as bright and cheery when played in Bb.....though the midsection in Ab sounds great!
I agree with you about the opener. Although now its a bit more clean and in unison, I like the original key. This happened in pregame also back in '03 I think...D page had a key change in the middle but was taken out that year. I suppose these songs were rough on some sections of the band in the old keys but it made all the difference. Still the band sounds very good, Yeah Band!
Tatersalad, this is actually quite awesome compared to most college drill you see. I encourage you to look up more videos on the Pride. You will see that they do not try to imitate drum corps. Yes the Cavaliers do some amazing drill, I know, I'm a huge corps nerd, but I also love the Pride and know that they are nothing like a drum corps when it comes to a drill standpoint. Cleanliness yes. Crazy Cavaliers style flying drill? No.
You are close to the mark. Historically, drum corps imitated U.T. The innovation of the Circle Drill by WJ Julian represented the first radical departure from military drills and pageantry show in the marching band world. Drum corps style drills sprang from these original circle drills. Visually, I much prefer traditional circle drills, line drills, countermarches, etc. than the esoteric squiggly forms that drum corps and some bands perform. Much easier to tell if a geometric shape is off.
I love this show!! I love this band!! I dont even care about the scholarships!! I just want to play my trumpet in this band! Its always been my dream and my chance to make it is Jan 17, 2009!!! Im so excited because I know Im not worthy now but I will be! YAY CIRCLE DRILL YAY UT!!!

All right Dr. Sousa, listen up! This is an awesome show, but we are getting sick of it. When I was in the UT band we did at least three and sometimes four different circle drills per year, and included at least one more number in the show between the circle drill and "Spirit of the Hill." Call Jim Idol out of retirement, wherever he is, and get some new stuff going. Or pull out the old charts (they've got to be around there somewhere).
I am a member of the AU marching band, and I have to say that y'alls circle drills are among the best in SEC marching bands. We did one circle drill and it was so difficult to get just right.
I am a former member of the Alabama Million Dollar band and former band/auxiliary director and I must commend the Pride of the Southland for such a entertaining show..and I commend you as I do The Million Dollar Band for keeping TRADITIONS ALIVE...so many college/high school bands these days are doing away with anything of tradition and going contemporary/modern and I am so glad that 2 such distinguished college bands keep traditions alive and well...again nice show!!!
This is so AMAZING! I have never been able to go to a UT game to see the band, but I'm auditioning for a music scholarship for next year. I play bass clarinet/clarinet and really hope I make it. :-D I LOVE THE PRIDE OF THE SOUTHLAND MARCHING BAND!! You all are great.
Brother, the Pride of the Southland is THE most incredible thing in which you could ever take part at UT. But, scholarships are almost nonexistent with them. And, there are only 8 clarinets in the entire Pride. Unless you are a PHENOMENAL clarinet player, plan on marching a brass instrument. I wish you the best of luck. Their rehearsals are on MWF from 120 to 330 at the intramural fields, go check it out!
I don't think I've ever seen a better video of Circle Drill on YouTube ever. This one is actually complete with "Welcome to Tennessee". Man I love life in TN!
You guys look so great! I miss you all like CRAZY!!! I got a little teary watching the spirals form and hearing the crowd cheer for you and all of your hard work!!! You should be SO PROUD!! At least the fans will always know that they can count on the "Pride" to show up on gameday. :)
at 5:52 look at the front side between the 40 and the 45 yard line left side. you will see a hat get kicked in the air. also between 6:34 and 6:35 there is a dummy doing the second bow wrong. that would be me. it is at the top of the 50 yard line.

@MagnusLegatus No. The drill for this particular show was written long before he came to the university.
