@DueyCockins Just because you came here because of vsauce does not mean you have to announce it in capital letters like you're a mental patient. I came here because of vsauce too but I'm not screaming incomplete sentences over the internet.
@DueyCockins I'm a firm believer that everyone should keep a get out of jail free card with them at all times. You never know when you're gonna need it! With something that valuable coming with the game you'd think it'd be more expensive. The Parker Brothers really care about their customers!
I still play my atari, still have much more fun than with my PSIII or X-Box. Maybe when one of them makes a 3-D Maze Craze.... mmmmmm
Hell I rather play an hour of Adventure than most of the online adventure games.
Which is not to say I don't love the newer games, it's just that they are all starting to become nothing more than a 3D shooter, just different variations. Even the RPGs. Just getting sick of the 3D concept altogether. Atari had much more of a variety of games than systems do now.
@VTwinty technically oddessy was before it but that had almost 0 graphics. Only 2 white paddles and a white ball. You hat to litreally put an overlay over it.
I cant begin to tell you how cheaply made the atari was. I remember replacing the atari adaptor like 10 times cause it either burned out or the connection to the console got worn
@WinstonSmith6079- I slightly disagree. Colllecovision was by far, the best console of the 80s. My cousin and I were mesmerized when we played donkey kong! It was State of the art in a sense that the games mimicked the actual games in the arcade. Comm 64 & Artari 2600 were amazing, but graphic wise and gamepay colleco vision ruled In my opinion.
LOL Pete Rose! hehehe I had Home Run! It was okay, but was very much more glad when they eventually "upgraded", releasing RealSports Baseball, a very cool and fun Sports game that I loved playing EVEN THOUGH I typically never did to this day care much for Sports games hehehe
@JMoney4shoTV LOL awesome! Now THAT'S quality manufacturing! Back then, they made shit to LAST, real sturdy-like hehehe
You could like drop any of those Atari cartridges onto concrete, REPEATEDLY, get it full and sand and dirt and god-knows-what crap and the damn would STILL work well as ever no prob LOL hehehe
@HeatherSpoonheim Maybe, but not exactly a fair comparison. The ColecoVision was a next-gen console after the Atari 2600. And by that, the Commodore 64 was waaay better than both! hehehe
@WinstonSmith6079 I had a Vic 20, and later worked on a Commodore PET - nothing ever matched the joy brought to me by my CollecoVision. Intellivision was next-gen as well, but it sucked!
@HeatherSpoonheim Hehe the trouble with the Intellivision (which as actually more primitive than the ColecoVision) was not the superior GFX & sound--compared to the competitor, the Atari 2600 VCS--but was that all the great games, including nearly all the coin-op conversion that existed at the time were made for the Atari that everyone in the world and their mother had hehehe
It was funny when even the Intelivision's maker, Mattel decided to submit and began getting a piece of the Atari pie LOL
@WinstonSmith6079 Yes, well Atari was what I wanted when I was given a Coleco for Christmas - Atari was what everyone wanted, I think. I'm just sad they couldn't hold onto that market - just a horrible chain of catastrophic decisions, it seems.
@HeatherSpoonheim Well the Atari 2600 VCS did hold on for a lot of years, even when technologically superior consoles came around, they still held the larger market-share by far.
In fact it seems that the only thing that really put it down eventually was the advent of home/personal computer. Consoles were out; computers were in. When I got my C64 in 1982, mine quickly gathered games (and other sofware) while my Atari gathered dust hehehehe
I have so much emulated stuff on my computer right now
I remember waking up at 4am on xmas one year..I think i was 8 years old or somethin...got..donkey kong, and pitfall. I was glued....the nostalgia is heavy there..
What's ironic is that there was actually a third party game called Pete Rose Baseball that was probably the best looking of any 2600 game. It looks better than both Home Run and Realsports Baseball. It actually reminds me of Accolades Hardball in some ways, which makes it a real achievement given the limitations of the 2600 hardware.
I can't believe Atari was once one of the strongest video game companies in the world!!!!!
I got bored and just started reading about Atari's history, OH MAN they fucked up all the time, everything they did was so idiotic and wrong from the Atari 5200, Atari Lynx(GIANT ASS) giving up on their laptops so they could concentrate on the Atari Jaguar WHICH FAILED big time
damn even today they can't catch a break( what is left of them, went broke and the remains where bought by some frech)
@upinflamezzz Sweet. I was the 1st kid in my school with an Atari. We bought it 1977. At the time, there were not yet any games for it except "Combat" (that came with the Atari). We bought it at K-mart for $279 (almost $1,000 today). Before the 2600, we have a dedicated Atari Video Pinball/Breakout console. I also remember getting the Atari 5200 for X-mas of '82 & the Nintendo NES for X-mas 1985 or 86.
@gjc82071 for example there was this one promo for the 2600 Ms. Pac-Man game where the boys club house is taken over by girls or something to that effect. Hav'nt seen that one yet.
@NiTRoGLLYCERiN Dude I think I remember that! Didn't the "girls" take it over....so they could play "Ms." Pacman? You know? Ms./girls....something like that? The Atari/Intellivision commercials....they sound familiar. I know George Plimpton was the spokesman for INTV. It may have been a commercial with him. Hey, BTW, do you still play? Do you have/use any retro emulators? I have real Atari, INTV, etc, but I just use emulators. Some even have support for online play with other people.
@gjc82071 It's the best when you can use the USB adaptors to use the real controllers. I just played Space invaders on an emulator using the real controller on a 110" projection screen. The 12 year old version of me would have lost his mind!
@chazcov08 110"? That would almost be like playing Atari on a drive-in theater screen, LOL! Yea, I guess a 12yo in the early 80's would lose his mind! hehehe. I use a real Atari 2600 Joystick too. USB Stelladapter. Is that what you use too? What emulator do you use, Stella? You know, PCAE (PC Atari Emulator) has Kaillera Client netplay support for free online play. I am dying to play Combat -VS- a human player. There is also an Atari 5200 emulator with netplay. Want to try'em sometime??
@gjc82071 It IS like playing on a movie screen. I took a video of my friend and me playing Warlords. Our heads were moving in unison following the ball. It was like watching cats watching a tennis match! LOL!
I do use a Stelladaptor. I have two of them for the head-to-head games. I would like to try the net play sometime. Ya gotta love how far the technology has come!
Upload that video! lol I'd like to see it. I'd netplay Atari with you. There is also emulators that have identical netplay support for: all Atari 8-bit (5200, 400/800), Intellivision, Commodore 64, Nintendo -NES, SNES, N64, Sega: Genesis/32x, Master System, Game Gear & MAME (arcade/coin-op games) From 1997 to about 2002, I'd always buy the latest RTS & a few RPG games, & PSP2, etc. But since discovering MAME in '97 (& all the other retro emulators) 90% of my gaming now, is retro based only.
@gjc82071 yes I use the Stella emulator. others i use include Atari800Win and MAME. I tried one of the c64 and 1 Atari Jaguar emulators. Atari800Win and MAME32k have Kaillera in them for online playing. Ive played MKII online alot and sometimes do real good with tsang suung. I was getting good money for atari stuff on ebay but thats kindof dieng down. The real old 2600's (heavy sixers) are valuable.
@NiTRoGLLYCERiN Cool! I use all those emulators too. Stella is awesome/the best 2600 emulator, but no netplay. PCAE has netplay. VICE is the best Commodore emulator, but again, no netplay. CCS64 has it though. I also use NEStopia, SNES9k & GensPlus (Sega Genesis, SMS) & Nostalgia (Intellivision) All have Kaillera. If you're up to it, I would like to get a game of whatever going with you sometime. Let me know. BTW I love Atari800Win+, but I've never tried it online (nobody to play with).
@NiTRoGLLYCERiN What? Dude!.....Come on. That would be nearly impossible. There's like 50+ servers/1000's of people. Wouldn't it be easier to set up a time/server & meet there? Not to be a cocky dick or anything.....I mean I'd really like to play sometime & all that.....but not enough to periodically & randomly search Kaillera for you. We should just set up a time. That would be much easier, more realistic & has the best chance of accomplishing the desired results. Let me know man. :-)
@NiTRoGLLYCERiN OK, cool. I will be there. I am EST zone BTW. I think you are an hour behind me, but I will verify that. If you get a chance & you remember, drop me a little reminder on Thursday or Friday. if i remember I will do the same for you. I'm looking forward to some retro gaming. :-)
@gjc82071 Speaking of that there was also this thing that happened in the 2600 days. It started with a 2600 atari commercial with a kid wearing a suit talking about how good atari was. shortly after intellevision does a parody of that where the intellevision guy butts in and says intelevision is better and then there was at least 1 or more parodies of that parody commercial involving another game system. it may have been colecovision, ADAM, TI, or C64 but not sure.
No it was originally about blowing your load. The little ball was jizz and the bricks were unfertilized eggs. The paddle represented a cock. They couldn't put that in the ad.
"you cant keep me in here forever atari" are you serious??? this is soo corny, the corny-odometer just blew threw the scales as fast as a virgin chasing a vag toy.
I remember getting all excited about the newest game console coming out...now it's like who gives a shit? Once you pass 35 nothing seems cool anymore=(
Pete Rose AND Don Knotts!!! they pulled out the stops for the 1978 launch. only 20 carts for launch, but not bad. I got mine in 1980 and ended up with 60 carts.
Damn I can't wait til the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim comes out! It will be the 100% complete polar opposite of these shitty graphics 1978 Atari classics!
Remember playing my uncle's atari when I was a kid and would go to my grandma's house, didn't remember Pete Rose doing a commercial for them. One time years ago, Pete Rose came into the bank while my mom was there. There were a lot of people waiting, but when Pete Rose came in; the teller waves him to the front of the line- and lets him cut in front of everyone waiting. Really pissed my mom off LOL.
"Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053) and outs (10,328).[1] He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B & 1B)."-Wikipedia I remember him like it was yesterday, I still have him on several baseball cards I got when I was kid.
@xXfrankillXx@xXfrankillXx actually, pong consoles and radar games are the first generation, the 2600 is the second, having interchangeable games and controllers, as a pose to a pong console with games programmed into the system, as well as external (wired) or controllers on the system itself, and radar which was a single game on primitive computer hardware.
I used too hate how my father used too say this is the best game system in the world.... me while i used too think as a kid that it was a piece of crap until 10yrs later i buy Atari 2600 system and now i enjoy it very well....
@VaderNES Do you remeber a video game that made from cell animation? The kind you see in cartoons? Ithink it was called Dirk The Daring and it was about a knight named Dirk who had to save a princess locked in a castle owned by the evil dragon Singe. It was very hard to play, let alone win. There were many obstacles for the player to get through in order to save the princess.
Pete Rose was betting that the Atari 2600 would destroy Colecovision. XD Just kidding, still love ya Pete.

NiTRoGLLYCERiN 3 months ago

@gjc82071 If you see me on a game server anytime soon my name will be SAVEMESWEETJESUS
NiTRoGLLYCERiN 2 months ago
@NiTRoGLLYCERiN What? Dude!.....Come on. That would be nearly impossible. There's like 50+ servers/1000's of people. Wouldn't it be easier to set up a time/server & meet there? Not to be a cocky dick or anything.....I mean I'd really like to play sometime & all that.....but not enough to periodically & randomly search Kaillera for you. We should just set up a time. That would be much easier, more realistic & has the best chance of accomplishing the desired results. Let me know man.

Breakout was originally about jail? Silly atari.
Gotmilk0112 3 months ago
@Gotmilk0112
No it was originally about blowing your load. The little ball was jizz and the bricks were unfertilized eggs. The paddle represented a cock. They couldn't put that in the ad.

Pete Rose AND Don Knotts!!! they pulled out the stops for the 1978 launch. only 20 carts for launch, but not bad. I got mine in 1980 and ended up with 60 carts.

"Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053) and outs (10,328).[1] He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B & 1B)."-Wikipedia I remember him like it was yesterday, I still have him on several baseball cards I got when I was kid.

the first generation.. =)
xXfrankillXx 4 months ago
@xXfrankillXx @xXfrankillXx actually, pong consoles and radar games are the first generation, the 2600 is the second, having interchangeable games and controllers, as a pose to a pong console with games programmed into the system, as well as external (wired) or controllers on the system itself, and radar which was a single game on primitive computer hardware.

@VaderNES That's too bad.
67nairb 5 months ago
@VaderNES Do you remeber a video game that made from cell animation? The kind you see in cartoons? Ithink it was called Dirk The Daring and it was about a knight named Dirk who had to save a princess locked in a castle owned by the evil dragon Singe. It was very hard to play, let alone win. There were many obstacles for the player to get through in order to save the princess.
