we went down to 10 men that day and still beat them. and they came over very pompous like and thought had it won before even walked on pitch.. serves em right for arrogance
I'm guessing that this was goal that sent Ireland to the World Cup and knocked Holland...but special because I like Ireland, but also agonizing because I'm part Dutch. Meh, it's a give and take scenario.
Roy Keanes from Mayfield, not Cobh. And you'll still find kilbane singing the national anthem! He had the class to learn even though he grow up in England
@doublejab100 Shay Given - Donegal Gary Kelly - Drogheda Richard Dunne - Dublin Steve Staunton - Dundalk Ian Harte - Drogheda Roy Keane - Cobh Robbie Keane - Tallaght Damien Duff- Ballyboden the remaining 3 players that day were matt holland, Kevin Kilbane (who's born to Irish parents) and Jason mcateer were born in England You make it sound like the whole team were English rejects
great day :D was only 11 when it happened but can remember this moment greatly. real underdogs that day thought the dutch would have being too hard to beat but as irish as we are we came out the winner absoloutly brilliant :D
When McAteer was playing for Sunderland he brought Roy Keane's book with him. McAteer sent a ball-boy into Man Utd's dressing room with the Keane book, and got Roy Keane to sign it for him !!!
Think it was that time Keane elbowed McAteer in the head and McAteer was all like *write it down in your book ya cant*.
@glenclosed I noticed Keane barely congratulates McAteer after this goal. It was like a half-hearted slap on the back as if to say "you did alright there I suppose but I still don't like you".
@BlakeTower if ian harte scored the we could have beet korea and you might never have know what happened after that but if roy keane was there i doubt it would have made a difference and the sandwiche is a pun
@TH3COMMUNISTC4T if harte had scored that penalty it doesnt mean ireland would have won cos that was before keanes penalty and if it had gone in not everything would have went the same as if it didnt, so for all we know ireland could have got beaten by even more, i dunno if we even would have beaten south korea but we will never know
They didnt lose to spain at all, the game was a draw. Ireland lost on penalties,if Keane played they would have won the game.
Next match was Korea, very beatable.
Next was Germany, who they drew with in the group. Like Spain match if Keane played it would have been a better Ireland team, and they probably would have beaten Germany.
Next was Brazil in the final, not saying Ireland would have won, if Keane was there, Ireland would have given Brazil a better game than England
@glenclosed a loss on penalties is still a loss, south korea were beatable but that doesnt mean ireland would have definitely won, korea were still that bit better than ireland with or without keane and they were also playing on their home turf so that too is an advantage, germany stopped pushing for goals against ireland in the group game so id say they wouldnt have made the same mistake twice, germany were and still are a much stronger team than ireland, do u know why keane left ireland
I know what Keane said himself about leaving the team, because I read that piece of shit of a book of his.
But since keane showed himself to be a liar in the book about other stuff (like ruining Haaland's career), I'm not going to take anything he says on board.
Ha makes me laugh when George Hamilton says "Keane, we can always rely on him" in this clip...hahaha get the fuck Keane.
Maybe you're right, Ireland probably wouldn't have been better off with him in Japan/Korea.
@jpksocrates Haaland had words because Keane tried to muller him.
Keane wrote in his book that he went out to "Do" Haaland. Except when the FA said thats fine here's a ten match ban he retracted, and Dunphy said he put that bit in to spice it up.
Which puts Keane's integrity on the line. If he's going to lie about that, what else is he lying about?
As Dunphy said, "Keane always said he hates politcians and hypocrites, now Keane has become both."
@glenclosed im a scholes fan not man utd, i also got a zidane pic as my profile pic that doesnt mean i support france. im a fan of many players that play for teams that i dont support or even like
@BlakeTower "a loss on penalties is still a loss" I think the point is that even without Keane Ireland came very close to knocking out Spain so logically a player like Keane may have tipped the balance in their favor. Although I do think that the Irish players stepped up big time after he left them which somewhat compensated for his loss. I think they would have still lost to Germany though because we would have had to have beaten them over 120mins as there is no way we would beat them on pens
I was there and it was one of the best games ever played by an Irish team against a top quality Dutch side, Roy Keane was outstanding that day he ran the show.
@macker283gr Come on now, the Dutch had a few chances in this match before Mcateer. Put away one of them and it could have been a very different result.
@jpksocrates Are you serious, did you see Russia against ireland - we may not have a team loaded with world class players but we do pull off the impossible because we play with such determination and heart, if we didn't have either of those factors on our side it would have been a different result but when we play like that then it's difficult for any team to beat us.
@Shaftsus Are YOU serious? We were destroyed against Russia. Without Given and Dunne pulling a Paul McGrath we would have been hammered.
Nothing heroic about refusing to play ball, kicking it away and midfielders afraid to look for it,whilst not being exceptional tacklers either. Where's the pressure? Where's the Link-up play?
Horrible but for those 2 heroes.
And my initial comment was not about a lack of heart, just how if the Dutch put away a chance it'd be goodnight Dublin.
@jpksocrates Yeah I know lol but you weren't on the field so it's easy for you to say that. Russia are a great side - they reached the semis in the Euro 2008. It doesn't have to be pretty to watch as long as we get the result - we have the best manager I think since Charlton, Trap's organised the team well defensively and it's paid off. It doesn't matter how we get there - you criticise this performance against Holland but we were unlucky not to reach the quarter finals in 2002.
@Shaftsus Holland was great result to get after such pressure.Drawing away after mcAteer put us 2 up is a result i had less time for. This result was a Godsend though.
Of course Russia HAVE been good. But this was pure luck, apart from the odd Kelly/Ward interjection we only had Dunne/Given stood up to it .
Those statues in Midfield wouldnt make jack's team, and if they werent allowed pass they'd damn well put in a tackle or two anyway.
Bring in McCarthy, even Fahy. Pass. Press too maybe!
@jpksocrates yah our midfield was dominated so bad which is why we struggled a lot with possession. Keith Andrews is especially shit, give Gibson and McCarthy a chance, not Paul Green : (
@jpksocrates Agreed, the dutch had a few chances but didnt take them, Ireland defended like Richard Dunne in Moscow. but you have to take your chances and the dutch didnt. Still the greatest day in Landsdowne Rd history!
We thought we could beat Portugal and Ireland in their home countries. @ Porto we became 2-0 but Pauleta made it 2-2. At Landsdowne road jason mcateer scored the goal that knocked us out of the competition. holland was in shock at that moment. We didn't went to the world cup 2002 were I think, with the generation van Bommel, Cocu, Kluivert, Van Nistelrooy we could have won the world cup
On this day also U2 played one of the best gigs ever seen in Slane Castle in Co. Meath. This day will go down in History for many reasons. Best day ever
watched this in mcguires limerick with a old mate of mine,,now deceased rip dave hourigan, the place erupted when mcateer took this chance, what a finish!real roy of the rovers stuff, and still my all time favourite ireland goal,c,mon robbie and the lads in macedonia saturday night, keane for 50.

Fouled twice and it didn't matter. Yet another goal impossible if not for Roy Keane. The greatest center midfielder of that generation. Will always miss watching him play.
I remember this match and I still do not know how we got this result on that day. A man sent off, Kluivert missing chance after chance and us looking the second best team on the park for most of the afternoon.
But we took the one chance that came our way and on that basis were deserving winners.
this is the goal that took republic to the world cup 2002 i watched it in spain with some of my mates in alcudia we went for 2 weeks that august was fuckin great craic
This would bring a tear to an old stone so it would!
I was lucky enough to be a ballboy for this match and I've never in my life, to this day, heard a roar like that after a goal. I remember when we scored I ran out on to the pitch and a photographer who was trying to get a picture of Mick Mc Carthy going mad because I was blocking his view. Will never forget it!
@KarlMartin2oo8 I know what you mean, I have hair standing up in places I didn't even know I had hair. We won't see the likes of that again for a long time. Under Trap, Keane would have been told to play it back to the defence Duff would have been dropped for playing advantage Finnan wouldn't have been allowed into the Dutch half of the pitch and mcAteer wouldn't have been picked because he was too attack minded.......
RTE: Irelands national broadcaster. We specialise in pumping out any movies or programmes that are anti-Nazi, anti-racist, pro-immigrant and pro-multicutural. We aim to air this rubbish, I mean fab stuff, everyday, or at least every chance we get.
RTE:Priming the Irish to support immigration, turning Ireland brown, one programme at a time.
remember exactly where i was when this goal was scored-me,my brother and my da going absolutely beserk in some tiny pub in lanzarote on our holidays.what a brilliant goal for the crowds response alone!
@FTPITV yeah and you only had 3 WC appearances TOTAL, with one thanx to us,nevermind the final spot, so shut you mouth big boy huh and 2002 was the last time you qualified for any major tournament , lol for fuck sake
@Bonepesci I go to the Netherlands every year to visit my Dutch friends, and I even support your national team, so a little less of your arrogance, you're only letting your own country down, and don't underestimate the Irish... the French did and look what happened to them???? Do you want the same to happen to your team??? I think not
I saw this match live on the big screens at Slane before U2 took to the stage that evening.
I'll never forget the roar of 80,000 people when McAteer scored that goal.I remember Bono describing the team as the greatest support act they ever had...
@subsoil007 Pretty much what robbie keane is doing for us these days but he doesnt get any credit because he's robbie keane, which is a shame. 51 international goals is phenominal, and he could reach 70 before he is done.
I was working at a corporate bash for about 500 dutch fans with two other blokes in a hotel close to Landsdowne rd that day. When McAteer score there silence apart from the three of us in the back corner. The black looks we got. A bonus was the dutch fans had planed to have the bash go on 'til the wee hours. After we won they weren't that inclined and we got to pack up and go home way earlier and still got paid for the full day
ASYLUM SEEKERS IN IRELAND CAUGHT 'ASYLUM SHOPPING'
243 Asylum seekers were transferred to other EU states after being caught 'asylum shopping' where they looked for refugee status in 2 or more countries.
40 failed asylum seekers were deported last night, a further 202 opted for help in returning home voluntarily rather than being removed.
source: Irish Independent 12/3/10
and there's no such thing as bogus asylum seekers, they say you are racist for saying so...
@Cafetero1075 Well even though I don't rate Van Gaal he was in a group with Portugal's "golden generation" and Ireland's best team over the last 16 years which had genuine world class talent. In short Holland had a giant task to get to that world cup and it turned out to be too big a job for them.
@Bepold .. I don't care how good the Irish or Portugal were. This generation of players got 4th place in 98 and should of won Euro 2000. And the Dutch always have world class players. VanGal sucks. Even if he got to the final with Bayern they got lucky.
Finnan absolutely RUINED his marker in the box,and the cross was divine. Brilliant finish from Mcateer,I remember when the ball hit the back of the net that day - elation!
Countries like Brazil and Argentina might have the great skillful players that they do have no doubting that but ireland have the passion for every single sport they play that will never die
Not there this time but the darkest hour comes before the dawn, lots of love to Eire from all your supporters down the road in Oz and up the road in Glasgow.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wow one Irishman playing for England there's a who library book of plastic paddys that have played for Ireland like Ray Houghton Aiden McGeady McAteer Andy Townsend etc .
lol your definitely not Irish no Irishman calls someone from England a limey or calls football soccer alert alert we have a yank posing as an Irishman lol .
@TheMagerleague the difference is all black English players and Rooney were born in England Wayne Rooney has Irish grandparents on his dad side but both his parents were born in England half the Ireland team from the 1994 WC were not even born in Ireland .
we went down to 10 men that day and still beat them. and they came over very pompous like and thought had it won before even walked on pitch.. serves em right for arrogance

in retrospect the comment "roy keane - you can always depend on him" is fairly ironic. what a goal though, was celebrating for days.

We kicked Ireland out at euro88, at WC94, at playoffs euro96 so you can have the wc2002 (one of the worst world cups ever)
hope we play again at euro2012 and kick you out AGAIN with a handball too HAHA
Bonepesci 1 year ago
@Bonepesci £ world cup final appearances and 3 world cup final losses! sucks to be Dutch doesn't it!!!
FTPITV 1 year ago
@FTPITV yeah and you only had 3 WC appearances TOTAL, with one thanx to us,nevermind the final spot, so shut you mouth big boy huh and 2002 was the last time you qualified for any major tournament , lol for fuck sake

@Bonepesci Ha ha, they look like such a bunch of retards!!!

2002 was a lot fucking better than the one just gone lol
sexycesc 1 year ago

How does VanGal keep getting jobs, he is a disgrace not to make the world cup.
Cafetero1075 1 year ago
@Cafetero1075 Well even though I don't rate Van Gaal he was in a group with Portugal's "golden generation" and Ireland's best team over the last 16 years which had genuine world class talent. In short Holland had a giant task to get to that world cup and it turned out to be too big a job for them.
Bepold 1 year ago
@Bepold .. I don't care how good the Irish or Portugal were. This generation of players got 4th place in 98 and should of won Euro 2000. And the Dutch always have world class players. VanGal sucks. Even if he got to the final with Bayern they got lucky.
Cafetero1075 1 year ago
Finnan absolutely RUINED his marker in the box,and the cross was divine. Brilliant finish from Mcateer,I remember when the ball hit the back of the net that day - elation!
