His opening assessment that the Cold War was not going to end anytime soon was wildly inaccurate, take that for what it's worth. Yeah, he was inside the Agency, but I think he is really an opportunist more concerned in advancing his writing and lecturing career than actually securing American interests. Covert actions are laden with inconsistencies and hypocrisies, that's the way it works. His apparent indignation is either feigned or totally naive. Either way, I discount most of what he says.

Shot gun destabalisation was primarily carried out by the ISI's favourite - known as Hezbi Islami - led by Gulbudin Hekmatyar. He rocketed the capital Kabul between 1992 and 1995 by the orders of Pakistan - and was and is a full blown terrorist. The chaos was used to counter the formation of any order in the country - and a third force was created to impose Pakistan's and the Saudi's plans for Afghanistan - namely the Taliban.
