Think about it. What would stop a defender from just stepping behind the goal line to put an attacker in an offside position?
He has to be counted. Imagine if he weren't, and the AR moved up to get in line with the 'NEW' 2LD, and all of the sudden the injured player got up and stepped back on the field? Now the AR is out of position. And he has too much to watch and think about to keep an eye on this guy and when he may get up.
This is onside and this is taught in referee classes.
@mikedelpiero9 not under the laws. he is deemed to be on the goal line until the next stoppage. Seems strange but if the laws made an exception for injury you'd have defending palyers faking injuries off the back line all day
According to the rule yes it is an offsiede for the resons mentioned though it is quite unfair is a player is INJRURED and the goal is allowed to stand, obviously there was a great deal of contact in this incident and no foul play by the italian player. He would've gotten up and played the offside trap if he was able to do so but he wasnt. I think there should be a clause placed into the rule so that at the ref's discression these factors could be taken into account in making a decision
@mamangas121995 doesn't matter. The position of the goalkeeper is irrelevant in that case. There is only ONE defending player between him and the goal when he receives the ball. Therefore, offside. it's that simple.
there is no speculating about this. it was offside. if a player is off the field of player, you cannot count him as being responsible for keeping ruud onside. offiside.
@LiquidYogi firstly. this was a uefa competition, and thus governed by uefa rules. secondly. I work for FIFA, and the rules state that when a player is off the field of play, he cannot and will constitute to be on the field and hence cannot affect any decisions regarding the offside.
I thought they were not involved in the play if they were off the pitch? Just the same as players are aloud to stand behind the goal when the keeper has the ball in his hands?
No,the players are considered being on the goal line, even if they go out of bounds. This is NOT an odd rule.Without this, every now and then, players would have exited the boundaries just to leave someone in an offside position. So,basically,it is a rule for precaution!
@recruitmentch Intentionally on unintentionally, he's still considered on the field. By the way I didn't say that I saw him on the field lol, so no idea what you're reading son! :)
Under FIFA and (I believe) USSF, yes. However, other codes (NCAA, NFHS, etc.) call them "rules," which makes more sense, as they're not sanctioned or enforced by any government agency or organization.
I believe Spanish uses the term "reglas," not "leyes," to translate "laws" when referring to the rules governing a sport.
Anything to help a fellow referee. But that law came out later when this incident occurred. So the law before then stated that a player not in the field of play will not be counted as an active player UNLESS HE IS CIRCUMVENTING THE LAW! In this case in the referees opinion and in mine he was indeed circumventing the offside law, and the goal was correctly given. So that law that came out later on is just another way of saying what I had just said. PS. NWS!!!!!!!
"Any defending player leaving the field of play for any reason without the referees permission shall be construed to be on his own goal line or touch line for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage of play. If the player leaves the field of play deliberately, he must be cautioned when the ball is next out of play."
All refs received this memo on May 26 2009 following the 123rd Annual General Meeting of the International Football Association Board that took place on 28 Feb. 09.
@wguynes why would the Italian player deliberately drop and roll here? He was injured by his own goalkeeper he wouldn't want his keeper to be yellow carded does he?
actually, even though i support italy, it is correct,as nistlerooy didn't move but just shot. if he had moved, offside straight.i know cause i'm a goalie
a player can leave the pitch at anytime, just as long as nobody comes on for him without letting the ref know. player went off, no longer in play, and medic can come to his aid.
So if his leg snapped, do they put him in after the surgery, think itll be on tim 4 second half, its the dutch missed 3 pk in euro 2000 against us, give them their win against the world champs, for he dutch it will be a day to remember for us it july 9 another day we got 4 cups to sit on, what did the dutch do in 08,like all other competitions thay went home early, who remembers euros anyway,,europeans, now the world cup mom and dad should have told you we have 4, ask em hw may the dutch have??
a player cant step out the field withotu permission of the refferee, even if he gets knocked out by own team mate, if it was by a player from holland it was offside.
its and odd old rule.

It actually is offside, player is off the pitch and is in an injured state! He did not PURPOSELY go out on his own. Whatever, Euros over, congrats to Spain. And I am still as proud as can be per L'Italia!
so was it offside?

@buccos2324 Spot on, that. For the offside calculation, the blue player was on the goal line.
This should be a warning for all those gravity-challenged players out there who think the drop-and-roll technique is always tactically smart.

omg....
I wanted Italy to win...
that guy that Buffon ran into should of got up and continued..
it was all his fault that the goal was counted
looser..
like...
