I have a question. As a teenager in the beginning of learning sign language, i've stumbled upon quite and predicament. What language to the deaf, or hard of hearing think in? It may seem a silly question, but when you cannot hear to learn the English language, would that mean you think in images or other visual cues?
It varies -- some Deaf who were raised orally and benefit from it do think in English. But I have met others who tell me they think in signs/ASL. The big question is how Deaf think before they learn any language (spoken or signed) -- my suspicion is that they think in images.
@grandma2maj Hi Grandma -- Dysconscious audism was taken from the idea of dysconscious racism -- the idea that racist (or audist) ideas are internalized by the minority group, and then find their way out in statements or thinking by members of that same minority group which are negative toward their own kind. It is "dysconscious" because it is not functional or healthy thinking. Think of it like "self-hatred".
Hi DrDonGCSUS, I saw this video in the Deafhood Dicussion on the Facebook. May I have your permission to post this vlog in the ASLRocks? There is a good discussion under "What is Audism detail?" by Philatino yesterday. This video is just perfect. Nice to meet you. ;)
I wanted to share what I have seen. There are many people accusing other Deaf people of Audism and Deaf Hate Crime. How come no one said anything when the person who accused others of Audism and Hate Crime was the real offender? In fact, we all are Audist in different ways it is because of our upbringing and barking at people is not the way to go, IMHO.
It is sad but true that these audistic thoughts exist that may be caused by ignorance and presumptions that they impose on Deaf children who grow up oral. Don, what a classic vlog and it's definitely gonna be my fav!
I have to disagree with you. In my home state, our deaf institute does not meet the state standards for passing english grade while mainstreamers have performed their state standards. How does oralist have to do with it? It's about the education. St. Augustine did not teach well on english oppose to other mainstreamers. St. Augustine students are mostly fluent on ASL but they don't write well. It has been ongoing issue for number of years.
Actually, many mainstreamed Deaf are not passing their state standards in English either. But, at the California School for the Deaf in Fremont, all of the students who had started there as Kindergarteners or ECE students passed the state English standards. It is all about using proper ASL/English bilingual education approaches.
But I have to question why you raised this point in this vlog. Your point has nothing to do with what I was talking about.
Many of us like Don G and myself and others struggle with loyalty and love of our Deaf fellowpeople...and how to best work/play/love/repsect them without the audist brainwashing that we went through.... Yes, you are right, there are some who just simply leave the community and do not contribute or work with our people....but DonG isn't talking about those people...he's talking about people like himself and me and others like us. Right, DonG?
I am talking about all of us Deaf and how we all have had our "brainwashing" in one way or another that affects our thinking about ourselves and our community. Some of us like Bunjer pointed out, never reject that brainwashing. Others of us, like Ella mentions, struggle with that brainwashing. But all of us have it. The important thing is that we have to be aware of it, and work within ourselves and each other to reject it and eliminate it as much as we can.
there are many of us like DonG amongst Deaf people...many of our Deaf leaders are definitely dysconscious audists....especially those of us who have been "handpicked' by our teachers, audiologists, speech teachers, to "represent" Deaf students at demonstrations, shows, etc. teaching us that we are "better off" than others of "them"... (continued)
some deaf people do get brainwashed and think they are better off being raised an oralist.. and look down deaf people.. but I wonder how many are out there.. I dont see them around cause they dont want to be around us deaf people anyway.. but there are also non oralist deaf people who were mainstreamed and use see or pse and think they are better than deaf people as well and dont really see them around much either.. its all because heraing people are audists making deaf victims of audism.
Well done! But I do have a lingering question. Do you mean after all of that "brainwashing" by Mom, you do find yourself in a position of an audist at times? If so, wow! That's brutally honest of you.
I'm not in a position of being an audist, since Deaf people can't actually BE audists, but yes, audistic thoughts do come to mind at times, because of that "brainwashing", which I have to actively suppress. That is basically the point of this vlog. We all have this audistic "brainwashing", and some of us have not yet learned to suppress it, while others of us have, but still experience those thoughts and ideas, because the "brainwashing" has been so long-term and is so pervasive in society.
I chose my mother to represent the majority, partly because her views DO so well-represent the majority, especially those fed the Oralist school Party lines. And also because she was the person primarily responsible for raising me orally and she fed me many of those lines while I was growing up.
Excellent! This vlog presents information to consider on more than one level here... oralism, horizontal oppression as well as linguicism and majority view as well as effects of oral education on the language development of Deaf people. I find it interesting you chose your mother to represent the majority.
