ah yes this is more like it, back in the days when V10's were used, graveltraps were everywhere and stewards rarely got involved, i may have only been 5 at the time but even so i miss those days :(
One of the best era's of f1!! When the pilots make the difference not the cars like today!!!! Can you imagine today a sauber overtaking a mclaren??? or a lotus overtaking a ferrari??impossible. There is to much electronic in modern f1 in my opinion.
@gianblood your memory must be a bit screwed. In 1997 there was very much a pecking order of cars just the same as there has always been. Would you have seen a Tyrrel or Minardi posting fastest lap, passing the entire field? Nope.
@chrisjones1980 Over 97/98 Ferrari, Benneton, McLaren, Williams, Jordan, Prost, Stewart, Arrows and Sauber all scored podiums. Also, a lot of the pecking order was down to qualifying in those days... 60 minutes and unlimited laps, so that usually meant the fastest would eventually be established. Gone are the days of 1v1 championships and overtaking having any value. Such a shame.
@WhyGenFM3 But what you are not taking into account there is that at least three if not four of those teams scored podiums due to the much higher retirement rate back then due to the much slacker regs on engine changes. Mechanical, hydraulic and electronical issues were much higher back then.
one of the rare true overtaking of the last years at montmelo

The Sauber C16 used in 1997 was the last Formula 1 car to have a perfectly round steering wheel.
The more you know...

@chrisjones1980 you're right ! but i think that there was more competition between the cars and pilots in this era.

Roguirio 10 months ago
@Roguirio Agreed. Coulthard was more or less a useless driver who for some reason got to drive way better cars than he ever deserved.
