IT is not the problem if people in Kosovo did not have any other land but Kosovo , The problem is ALBANIANS who live in Kosovo (Serbia) started terrorist acts in 1998 in 1980's they wanted their schools to be in their language , than they demanded more and more rights. At the end resulted in they wanting Kosovo Republik They are Albanians who demand separation from Serbia but they HAVE their own country ALBANIA. USA bombing of Serbia does not make sense.

At least in the ideal situation. Of course there are thieves out there who would unjustly steal private and public land, but many of them already are working for some level of current government.

But the fact that the US govt supports secessionists in Kosovo and Sudan sure makes it look like a hypocrite for not allowing it in the US, despite the Declaration of Independence which we celebrate every July 4 which recognizes right to alter or abolish government.

The tax was being promoted and would hurt the south more which both exported and imported heavily. It didn't pass til after several southern states had seceded. Slavery was more of an issue in the states most heavily dependent on it.

The present government would indeed use military force against those who would secede. The reason would be the same as it was the last time. Contrary to the untruths that are taught as history today, the states didn't secede because of slavery. They seceded because of the Morill tax that was unbearable for the southern states. I don't support any of the abusive policies of my own government for special interests like Aipac. I'm losing my house to foreclosure. I'm going bankrupt. Yet, on every major street corner there is a camera taking photos and will charge $400 per petty violation. California raised taxes and groceries are damn near unaffordable.

My opinion on the whole matter is that state secession in inevitable. The federal government has become so abusive that people will fight back. The individual is helpless in the battle. States, however, are big enough to have an impact.

I can also think of some reasons those in power would use force. 1) They want to maintain power and need the status quo of the United State to maintain that power. 2) The prospect of a civil war creates civil unrest and fear. Our government loves using fear to control people. 3) Some intellectual elites may actually view military forces as a type of population control (as sick as that notion sounds).

I think some in the federal government would support using force, but there are some inherit problems that may stop them. 1) There is the possibility that using force would cement their position as thugs galvanizing other states to take similar action. 2) There is the possibility that military and/or police officials would simply disregard orders from the top. 3) For certain smaller states, it may not have enough economic impact to matter.

I think it's possible for a peaceful secession. None of the states seceding would want a violent conflict in the first place. However, the ball is really in the court of the Union on this matter. Who's in charge of the Union would greatly dictate the response to such an event. I'm hoping history would not repeat itself in this case and states wanting out would be allowed to leave without any amount of violence. I'm not however greatly optimistic that it would be allowed to happen quietly.

Perhaps declaring secession is not the best route. Currently there are many state legislators introducing bills that re-affirm the Constitution and say that federal laws which violate 2nd, 9th, and 10th amendments will be considered null and void.

If states assert their sovereign rights under the Constitution step by step, they can minimize the shock and the danger of outright secession. They need to also protect citizens from federal violators in their territory.

Ron Paul brought up an interesting issue regarding secession. We could see what he called 'Defacto Secession' which is when the States receive checks from the Federal Govt and those checks begin to bounce. The States could very well secede due to the Federal Govt being broke. Remember the Federal Govt doesn't produce anything, what it has it gets from the States.

To say that secession is unconstitutional begs the question. Why did several of the states have the right to secede in their state constitution? How about this. Why does that Bible propose 3 steps in responding to a tyrannical government?

1. Protest against the authority

2. Flee from the opposition of the authority

carol- serbia was never in a union with kosovo. first it is kosovo i metohija which is the blackbird field and holy land (translated). and it is a region of the independent serbia. not it's own state. serbia does not have states, just districts (which is like a county). serbia is serbia. that is why you see kosovo is serbia.

Your question about Taiwan seceding from China is invalid, and could easily play into China's hand, which is very dangerous. This is because China and Taiwan have never been a "union". So, there is no secession issue. Since Japan relinquished Taiwan after WWII, Taiwan's status has been undetermined. Recently, the U.S. state department declared that Taiwan is neither part of China nor a sovereign country. Taiwan's future is up to its voters to decide through referendum.

Taiwan in the past and present has always been under the subject of poor economic management. Sure, they may be doing well as an economy, but what happened to the excess resources? Most are embezzled by the politicians, including their leaders, such as Chiang Kai Shek's family and Chen Shui Bian. Lincoln did. As there is no significant secessionist movement right now, I'm not certain it's relevant to the current political landscape. Maybe if California becomes 80% mexican, the issue will come to the fore- but the precedent is that the federal government will indeed use force to preserve the Union.
