  • I have to laugh nowadays. When we have new friends/family members over at dad's place they see the magnets on the frig. They're conversation items, on the faded side. LOL!

  • they remind me of my family

  • My husband worked at the Ralston plant in Lancaster Ohio that made the cereal. I actually toured the facility and saw how the cereal was made! We had all of the magnets and plenty of cereal!

  • "okay! here CUMS the big FINISH!" <---- LOLOLOL

  • Freakies Cereal Commercial 1974 / nick jr radio

  • I used to eat this crap back in the early 70's when I was a kid....Freakies, Quisp, Count Choccula, Rice Krispies. Man, I am surprised I Iived!

  • my dad has a magnet of that thing with the long legs

  • @pepsicolaluv Your Dad is cool as hell!! I loved this cereal when I was a kid.

  • What punk rockers? They may pop on your mouth.

  • So that's where puck rockers evolved from

  • Freaky is right. Was freaky back then, even freakier now.

  • So freakin funny! :)

  • Who are the ad wizards that came up with this?

  • Why would 7 people not like this commercial??? I practically lived on Freakies cereal when I was a kid. I had all of the Freakies toys too. Ah, the good old days when you could get a toy in a cereal box!!

  • Animated by Preston Blair, legendary Disney animator!

    Hey...

This artist is selling these really cool little tiles on etsy.com (they have the whole set!). You just type in 'freakies cereal'

  • when I showed my wife this, she asked, "What are they? Intestines?"

  • I loved these commercials when I was a kid!! I looked forward to seeing them between saturday morning cartoons!

I made my mother buy it all the time so I could get the Freakie inside- who knew you could order them all at once? My cousin did and I was so jealous. My mother stopped getting me the cereal because I refused to eat it. It was so disgusting. I can taste it to this day! LOL

But I loved the commercials then and love them now!

  • @imcandyman I had the whole set, too. I used have them go camping with my Fisher Price Little People.

  • I was a kid when this cereal was on the market and not for a minute did these stupid ads make me want to try the stuff. No offense, it's very nostalgic to watch. But it's nice to know that not everything waved in front of the face of a kid will prompt him to nag his folks to buy. This also went for Count Chocula or any of those cereals that served marshmallows for breakfast, Kool Aid or Fluff. Man, pure poison, all of it.

  • I remember being an impressionable 7 year old thinking this was just about the coolest shit I'd ever seen. Can't believe I used to eat this crap. I blame it all on television and junk food...;)

  • don draper thou art avenged!

  • I think they were dabblin' in the "booger sugar." Lol.

  • I had the green dude magnet that I lost long ago:(

  • Holy... crap. It's been nearly... yikes... 40 years since I've seen that. :D

    NEARLY!

  • Back then all cereal tasted like Captain Crunch.

Freakies was ahead of the game because they were way cooler than Captain.

  • lol loved these almost as much as Quisp :)

  • My mom still has my Boss Moss magnet on the frig. LOL loved this commercial and cereal.

  • @kll510

    I have my Grumble magnet!

  • Dang, 35 years later and this jingle is still in my head~!

  • @pbanta62 you mean 37

  • my sister loved this cereal

  • Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal...

  • Call me crazy but I don't remember the commercial, but love the cereal! I have been in search of a comeback.....

  • Oh my gosh. Blast from the past here. I used to love the toys in Freakies. Hadn't thought about that cereal in years.

  • it's like a commercial for crabs aids and all sort of gross viruses.

  • I vividly remember this Cereal comming-out in late 1974-not bad,,it had its own

peculiar "crunch"-but it had a long way to go,where Capt Crunch was concerned!

  • their right it is "creepy"

  • Holy fuck, this makes me NOT want to eat this cereal.

  • Yep.I remember shaking the damn box side ways and looking out for Mom not to catch me (can't reach into the cereal to get the blasted thing out) and the coveted green freaky thing character wrapped up in cellophane seemed so much like winning the lottery at 12! ***SIGH******

  • I remember getting the freakies magnets and sticking them on the fridge.

Those where the good old days when you would get up on saturday morning watch cartoons wrapped in a blanket with bowl of your favorite cereal and watch until the last cartoon .

  • I was in the 4th grade when they came out. Awesome. I used to use the erasers that came inside the box. I used to get on my 4th grade teachers nerves singing this song. Great Times.

  • we used to sing this at school cutting up in class....thanks for the memories...

  • I so loved this commercial when I was a child!! Glad I finally found it, it has bothered me for years not being able to remember it!!

  • one of the dozen men who created it was my grandfather John W. Bates. One of the mad men in advertising in the 60's and 70's.

  • Comment removed

  • I not only had the figurines but the magnets you put on the fridge. btw, does anyone remember Grins and Smiles and Giggles and Laughs, cereal?

  • RIP Freakies 1972-1976

  • I remember this cereal, and yes it did taste like Captain Crunch. I loved it. A few years ago they brought it back. It was a completey different cereal that tasted terrible. I was so disappointed.

  • Yes, I remember getting a box- I studied it all carefully. Man, what a joke. Now they design food to kill people- Peanut Butter Crunch- the greasy cereal. If I had my life to live over again- I'd make sure it didn't have a friggin TV in it-

  • @hozayamz, Thanks for the great laugh reading your comment gave me! Sadly, I never thought about it but its true... "Peanut Butter Crunch - the greasy cereal." I remember after eating a spoonful of this stuff, it would leave a greasy film in my mouth. When I think about it now, its disgusting! Huh!... but so life went!

  • Did you ever notice the song is loosely based on

Hello my baby, hello my honey,

    hello my ragtime gal....

  • Does anyone remember KABOOM? It had the clown on the front. MMMMM!! Memories.

  • This cereal was very nasty. I really hated it.

  • Oh yeah!!! I remember this cereal!!

  • Yes thank you!! I tell people about Freakies cereal but very few remember it. Does anyone remember Kaboom, Fruit Brute (a pilot of the monster cereals) and King Vitamin (also tasted like Captain Crunch)?

  • ugliest cartoon characters

  • i for got all about this cereal

  • I was just reading that Preston Blair animated this. I didn't believe it at first, but after seeing how fluid these characters move (compared to how stiff you'd expect them to be) I believe it! WOW WOW WOW! Oh and this ad is scary. :(

  • i ate freekies as i write this that freakie is lookin' at me one of my memories ceral box toys wish i had more more and more

  • I was 4. It sure freaked me out.

  • Gargle sounded like he stepped out of Monty Python. Cowmumble seemed to have a thing for Boss Moss. I remember another ad when they mistook Hamhose for a monster.

  • i can never sit under a tree without jizzing myself again

  • I miss Boss Moss.

  • Wow! That brings back some memories! I remember begging my Mom for this cereal. They should bring it back!

  • I loved the origional Freakies. Pure sugar goodness. Too bad I only have 1 plastic "Pomumbo" (spelling?) figure left out of the bunch.

  • Hahaha...yea for Freakies!!! They were GrOOviE!

    MissM

  • I still have 3 Gumble refrigerator magnets!

  • I just remember having a purple character (Gargle I think) in a boat that you attached a balloon to and it would zip around the tube... I can also remember screaming and crying for it in the grocery isle :)

  • I remember this didn't catch on very well.

  • @UEhappydudey I guess cuz I barely remember any of it

  • What I grew up on

Now here come the guys in the white coats with the electric paddles...

  • we had a wall clock of the Freakies shaped like a giant wrist watch. It was so cool, my sister had it for years in her room and of course we threw it out, who knew all these things would be worth money?

  • used to have a 'boss Moss ' refrigerator magnet

  • I remember when my dad told me about this from when he was a kid

  • Lol, what an odd name for a cereal!

  • OMG..i forgot about Freakies.

  • my neighbors had all the magnets of these guys! they were so lucky!

  • I love the fact that I am seeing the commercials again. I loved the Freakies. I have six of the seven plastic figurines. Does anyone know who might be interested in purchasing them?

  • I can't believe it! Freakies cereal!!! I didn't think I'd ever see these characters ever again. I had forgotten their names, but I remembered the song. It is Burgess Merideth narrating. They have John Wayne, Mel Brooks, and other sound alikes. I didn't realize that as a kid. I loved Freakies even more than Quisp Cereal. Does anyone remember Monster cookies? Each cookie had a bite taken out of them by a different monster. Am I remembering that right?

  • I remember that commercial where they surf from outer space to those kids house, but not this one.

  • I collected every single one of the cheap-o little plastic "Freakies" figures; I was SO excited and proud that I brought them to (Elementary) School the next day to show 'em off. So OF COURSE I lost the lunchbox that I was carrying 'em in! Waah!

  • After Freakies died screaming I remember the toys from the cereal being for sale still sealed for pennies in grab bins at toyshops in the very late 80's. 2 years later they are worth a lot... go figure.

  • I've got a Hamhose figure

  • Just think, probably over a dozen grown men dedicated hours and hours in 'creative' boardroom meetings to come up with this commerical.

  • @spockmcqueen I do it everyday!

  • I want Freakies magnets and toys.

  • Bring this stuff back

  • @dtrombetta , did'ja see the NEW boxes of QUISP?! Yes, Quisp is BACK!!!

  • I made my parents buy 4000 bxs of this shit just to get that freakie in the box.

  • Never had the cereal, but I remember the commercial. I had to eat that damn Shredded Wheat instead!

  • This is back when REAL cereal dominated the market. REAL cerral died when all the healthy cereals took over and spread like a virus, choking out and murdering all the good cereals....

  • @SabertoothCat

that's why i don't buy cereal anymore. around 1990 they made it for nursing home people instead of people who have more than 10 years to live.

i would be embarassed to buy this in the store but would still buy it nonetheless.

  • I only remember Boss Moss, Snorkledorf, Goody Goody and Ham hose. I can't remember what it tasked like.

  • Alpha Bits, but less sweet, it stunk!!!

    Good toys though....

  • I remember this cereal...think it was like a Capn Crunch ripoff..

  • Wow, does that bring back memories. Thanks!

  • That song has been engrained in my brain since I was a kid.

  • I remember the Freakies and I ate the cereal too.

  • I remember the hilarious Seuss-like hook. This was pure fun in those days. Children need this kind of fun today.

  • Holy Crap, I remember all the words to this song! How lame is that! I don't think I ever had Freakies cereal, though. My mom did get Quisp and King Vitamin, though. I guess they weren't as sweet.

  • Snorkledorf, Hamhose, Cowmumble?? Where did they come up with those names??

  • He does.

  • This is one of those jingles that has stuck with me for 35 years! Glad it's posted here. I was beginning to think I was the only person who remembered it!

  • I still have my Snorkledorf magnet!

  • Thanks for posting this:)

  • I remember that cerial. I remeber collecting the toys and the magnets of the Freakies characters.

  • Heh... I remember this, too. You have to applaud them for the highest concept cereal ad I think ever was... Multiple characters introduced, a Broadway-like musical finish... But oddly, the entire concept crashed. I don't think the stoned 70's world was ready for characters named "Cow Mumble" and such. Still, it's a fascinating failure. Lesson learned ? It's just *cereal* for pete's sake. Keep it simple.

  • How many years did this cereal last?

My brother and I loved it. Also wasnt there another Freakies cereal that came out soon after the other original. Super Freakies or something?

  • I never had some of this stuff as a kid, but I sure in heck remember these commercials...even recalling the darn lyrics, lol. What was the consistency of the cereal, like glorified Cheeri-O's?

  • this damn cereal was delicious! my grandparents had freakies magnets on their fridge. 1st cereal i ever had when I was 4.

  • I remember these!! Man, it's been sooo long! I had a couple of the toys from the box and a magnet too!

What a shame the kids of today can't have all this sugary fun with a prize in the box! Now there are stiff rulse about this sort of advertising. And where have all the Choco-diles gone?

  • I still have my blue plastic elephant guy from the cereal box!

  • bet he's worth more than you think he is!! Look him up on ebay and you might get a bit of cash for him!! If you have all 7 of them, someone is asking $100 for them!

  • I don't think I can sell him at this point though. He's like family!

  • My mother still has my Freakie magnet on her fridge to this day! I couldn't remember the name of the cereal until I saw this. Thank you!!!

  • I haven't seen this TV spot in 35 years. Now I can't get this Freaky tune out of my head. You have been officially warned: it can happen to you,

  • OMG!-havent seen/heard or thought about this in YEARS!,...43 here and NOW feel so MUCH older!-LOL!

I remember the lil plastic freakies figures that came in the box,...

  • Oh man. I totally forgot about this commercial and product until I saw it here after not seeing it for well over 30 years (I was 5 years old in 1974). Excellent cereal.

  • I still have a Freakies magnet!!!!! I love this!!!!! Shawn

  • I'm so old.

  • Man this really lets you know how old you really are!! I still remember eating this cereal on saturday mornings.. During the 70's

  • This was a great cereal to sit down and watch sunday morning cartoons with. Oh and you actually got a prize in the box, that you didn't have to send away for. The good ole days...

  • was my favorite cereal when I was in 4th grade lolzzzzzz

  • Man I this is awsome My friends never belived me about his cereal & I thought it tasted good!!!

  • what the hell are those things

  • I loved the Freakies cereal, I think.

I know I loved the magnets (I still have them), but can anyone tell me what it tasted like?

That was ~35 years ago and I was 6 when I last had it so I don't remember.

  • that shit was mad sweet yea i was young like 3 or 4 years old eating that cereal... used to be my favorite at the time

  • OMG i had the magnets too! The cereal tasted a lot like Captain Crunch.

  • Fag.

  • It tasted exactly like Captain Crunch! This was a great cereal to eat on Saturday mornings while watching cartoons. Does anyone remember Vanilla Crunch in the light blue box with the white whale?

  • @robdagun I remember Vanilla Crunch...and the short-lived Cinnamon Crunch too. And I remember this commercial and eating Freakies! You're right...it was a Captain Crunch clone.

  • @robdagun yes I remember "Vanilly Crunch", that cereal was AWESOME!!! Also Cinnamon Crunch (with Jean LaFoote the pirate) was awesome too. Quaker should bring those two cereals back!!!

  • @mrmoore1970 Quisp! I can still buy Quisp, my guilty pleasure at 49 yrs. old!

I want to see Quake cereal again!

    Cinnamon Crunch kicked @ss!

  • @oldoipunk I loved Quisp too!

  • @robdagun Yeah - I remember that awful stuff! :) Still a 46 year old kid!

  • @robdagun Wasn't Vanilla Crunch called Nilly Crunch? I loved it!

  • @robdagun: YES! Loved that, wish they would bring it back. At least we can get Boo Berry and Frankenberry around Halloween.

  • @robdagun I thought *I* was the only person who remembered Vanilla Crunch! LOVED that stuff!

  • back when kids cereals actually had sugar.

  • damn captin crunch w a difrent name.lol

  • rhis cereal tasted like king vitamin

  • The cereal itself wasn't that good; but they had darn good prizes! Those freakies figures go for quite a chunck o' change these days...wish I still had my Gargle figure. *SIGH*

  • I had Snorkle

  • I feel your pain, I had a complete set plus a few duplicates...If I still had them, I'ld only sell the duplicates though. For the short life this cereal had, it's surprising how many people remember it.

  • @wsbtam i know! i had all of them, the lil plastic guys, i dont know what is was, but they were mint! i meancool, boy, that is a cerial il never forget.

  • Wow! Now in here I don't feel old.. I loved this cereal and back then the toys were cool..

  • This just reminds me of the film Flakes...Thats a good cover of this song haha

The actual cereal is way before my time...

  • I forgot all about that cereal until I saw that! Wow! Really don't remember it that well...but I had at least one of those toys, so I know that I ate it. Miss those commercials from the 70s....I can't tell if they were better because they were better, or because its my childhood...but I love the hokiness of them.

  • did U know ad men in the 1970's snorted A LOT OF COCAIN?!?!?!!?

  • A minute and two seconds to sell a cold cereal?!?!?!?! Oy Vey!

For years we had the magnets of "Snorkeldorf", "Gumble", "Boss Moss" and "Gargle"on our fridge

  • I've still have some on my fridge!

I did save some of the iron ons too.

  • lol this was funny can't believe this was 14 yrs b4 i was borned.

  • I forgot all about this cereal! I remember the characters from the ad and I remember collecting the Freakies from the cereal boxes! When did this ad and cereal come out - anyone recall?

  • Yeah, me too. I had a ton of those toys.

  • Probably around 1974 or so! I was a little kid when this was out!

  • i still have one of the magnets on my fridg!

  • When I was a kid I sent away for the whole collection of characters and I remember they were only .35 cents!!

(still have 'em packed away too! :o)

  • oldedrum, I moped and cried as a kid...we had a TV, and I was so thrilled by these commercials, but my family never got fancy cereal, there was no hope of getting one of these little toys. You have a treasure, a piece of unrequited childhood desire......a sad memory.

  • beatcat22---Hey all hope is not lost!

    I'm sure you've heard of E-Bay right?

...Well, there is your possible reconciliation my friend! :o)

    'oldedrum'

  • Don't feel bad beatcat, we never got he cereal with the toys in it either. I used to get excited going to my mum's parents because my grandpa ate Shreddies and always kept the toys for us.

  • i still have my green freakie magnet

  • I thought I was the only one. hehe

  • I was there when this commercial aired on television. I was eight years old, but I still remember it. Thanks capnskull for puttin' this on the 'Tube.

  • I still remember the lyrics: We are the Freakies, they are the Freakies, this is a Freakies tree.

We never miss a meal, 'cause we eat our cereal.

It's become the mantra of my life.

  • That is a huge bucket of awesome packed into 1:02. Thanks for posting!

  • I had the whole collection of the free freakies that came in the box

  • Yeah! Freakies!! I thought I was the only one on the planet who remembered this! Wow.

  • That's what my brothers and I thought!! We had t-shirts (we had to send away for them) and magnets and figurines. We even "were" them: one brother was Boss Moss, the other Gargle (?) and I was Snorkeldorf. Yeah, I know ...

  • shoot your tellin me!!! LOL
