Aarrrgh! I've aphids living all over my lettuce! Damn them!
I need to make up this tonic but I'd say at this stage a pint of bleach might not even work - this is an invasion. I can barely see my lettuce for green aphids - it's like the lettuce is one giant mass of colonised aphids.
What would I use instead of Murphy's oil soap which I've never heard of? Could I mince up a teaspoon of laundry soap or something?
I might not be able to get jalapenos either here in Irish Tescos...
Aaarggh! I need to do something - some small green aphids or something are living all over my prize lettuces. I would make up this tonic but I might have trouble getting jalapeño peppers not to mention "Murphy's Oil Soap". I've heard of "Murphy's Stout" though I preferred Beamish and Guinness of course but oil soap never heard of. What kind of alternative would I be looking for in an Irish Tescos?
Could I take a few slivers off a bar of of industrial soap and add that in instead?
glad to hear that jamie! Yes, it works ! Although you will have to repeat it after rain, and watering, etc...i also forgot to mention that the batch I made of course was way more than fits in a spray bottle, so I store the extra in plastic jugs (like milk container) and refill the bottle as needed!
I like gardening but corn is one vegie I don't do. Too little yield for the space it takes and the water it uses. Corn makes a nice cover if you are growing marijuana. I do zukes, squash, tomatoes, beans onions(green) and certain herbs(basil, thyme, spearmint) As I tell people, if I can't eat it or smoke it, I won't grow it
interesting ingredients for the little buggers.. ive found growing a few onions and garlic keeps a lot of pests away. just having those growing near by keeps bugs off other vegies
Aye, it is planting season. The best way to bust bugs are to have friendly insect-eating birds nearby your garden. Occasionally, Redbirds (northern cardinals) and some raven-looking bird visit my backyard at least twice a week and eliminate any insects that are in there. I don't use any non-biodegradable chemicals at all. :)
your garden looks great. do you direct sow heirloom seeds and when they sprout, use the mulch? or do you grow plants indoors then transplant the seedlings when it gets warmer in the mulch?
bronze fennel attracts ladybugs but they wont stick around long if there's not enough aphids for them to eat. human urine and pinch of red pepper in a bowl lined with tin foil will repel many nasty little garden terrorists but i like your recipe much better :)
What's the story with putting earth around the bases of potatoes? What's that about like? I'm growing them here and I'm damned if I can even get at the things they are so close together and so thick with leaves....
I've planted my spuds in cowdung too - the old lads in my barrio told me to do that. I hope they don't taste like shit.
Go buy ladybugs, it's the best for aphids and other soft body, small leaf eaters.. thrips, whiteflys and all kinds of bugs, ladybugs my friend they are like the terminators of the garden.
Saweet progress on your garden! You have much earlier planting season than I do over here! Since I'm only living here till towards the end of summer, and I can only dig in two lil areas by the house(not much sun there)I have planted in buckets, and kiddy swimming pools :) heheh we have a saying here in oregon, your corn needs to be Knee high,by the fourth of Jul:)hehe I have just planted cucumber seeds, chives, beans, and a few other things.I planted some of my plants in the pools too.
Very good video, you look like you're doing really well. Your soil is going to be very depleted after the corn and potatoes. Start an organic compost heap now and put it on the soil at the end of the season.
Hey girl, i tried a similar recipe found on the net and it did not work for some plants, in fact it just about destroyed my bush beans, found out they don't like garlic to much either far as companion planting so im wondering if that was it..but anyway, going to try your recipe..im having a huge problem with caterpillars eating my strawberry plant leaves and broccoli.
here is a hint toss cigarette bud's into a tup of water leave it sitting for a week and then fill the water into a pray bottle and spray you plants ... this will get rid of you bug's old grandma tip
A pinch of tobacco plus a drop of Dr. Bronner's soap in a quantity of distilled water is good. I saw above, some bean plants didn't like it -- many plants will not tolerate tap water. Has to be rain or even distilled water.
It's the same thing as a nicotine based pesticide, Go bio, I had Aphids all over my flowers and plants and bam, I went out and bout ladybugs, and the entire problem went away like almost overnight, I've had to take care of small outbreaks, but for the most part those things are like little red and black killers, like demons from the abyss they go for the small moving green bugs and destroy them, sometimes not even eating them, but cutting them in half and moving on to the next one.
As usual, good video and Excellent music. Bananarama's best song. Reminds me of Daniel Larusso at the Video Arcade chasing his love in the movie Karate Kid.
Research Irish gardening to completely eliminate weeds. Also, if you want to grow great vegetables, then use pure dirt and add worms. Worms eat dirt and poop out better dirt. Do not use fertilizer. It kills worms. The worms are the most important variable in your garden. That and of course good seeds that haven't been genetically modified by Monsanto. Check out channel LAGOVAGO for information about worms. Also Winston Shrouts Phoenix seminar DVD explains. Fortunately I was there live.
thanks for sharing. i may have to try that on the aphids that attack the broccoli and kale later in the summer.
the pantyhose gave me an idea - i may try using that for making jelly and huckleberry syrup in the fall. lots of old stockings around i haven't thrown out yet.
by the way- HOW DARE YOU WASTE THE GARLIC! hehehe. I eat it raw! I love it. Yes I know- it looms on ya for a while, but i can't help it. I'm addicted to the Garlic.
aww sis, lookin good there. I haven't grown a garden since me grandpup passed away. He and I used to keep a massive garden. (the mosquitoes were relentless).
Undiluted vinegar and lemon juice in an insecticide sprayer for weed control. Sprayed just prior to noon or earlier will burn the weeds in areas where you normally have to use an edger or a weed-wacker.
I'd like to share this video with a few farmer friends; if you don't mind.
Good info, another thing that keeps bad bugs away is neem oil spray its pretty cheap. Another cool way to keep slugs away 100% is get 3 inch copper pipe sections with 90 degree elbows and build sqaures of them around plant bases slugs cant cross copper.
From the title of your vid I thought it was going to be about busting bugs, like microphones, or those pesky video cameras they put in the digital tv conversion boxes.
Now I know some of you are thinking Obama has get better things to do then to peak in on your living room while you are watching Simon badmouth another poor soul on American Idol.
Your right, he would rather smoke a Kool, but since he can look at ya he might for some ha ha's that he can share with some of his Boyz!
I am beginning to take things like this more seriously. I have an elderly cat that gets very ill when I use over the counter flea products. I am going to try using lemon juice on her and see if it really works.
