Thank you for posting this. It's great when experienced players share exercises and tips that have helped them become excellent players and develop their technique.
BILL you're great thanks for this video and you sound great as ussual. your on my list of great jazz flutist like Jeremy Steig, Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann!
Hey Rosygirl that's a pretty dumb ass feeble comment. Why don't you enlighten us with some constructive input of your 30 years of playing flute or have you not learned anything in those 30 years....WaNkEr....Ha...Ha...Ha
NONSENSE...That Was AWESOME!!! Crazy cool jazz solo. I'm starting to play jazz flute on my flute and I'm gonna try these and I'll tell you the result.
By the way what type of crown is that and does it effect the sound/tone of your flute?
@billmcb Bill, can you tell us briefly how do the different set-ups of Bigio's stopper and crown sound and for which situation/music they're most suited? Have you tried the Mark Seidman's flute plug? Thanks for the nice videos. Very inspiring!
Nonsense at the end.........I wish I didn't make as much sense......And Laws IS the MAN, not Herbie Mann.. who put jazz flute on the map, and then Laws took it to outer reaches of solar system. Love the lesson, keep em coming and check out Jeremy Steig, "Howlin for Judy"....He also rules!
Just as a matter of interest...Herbie Mann was, in fact, my first influence until I heard Hubert Laws...and that was it for me!...
Now, despite my strong allegiance to Hubert Laws, my favourite jazz flute album of all time is, in fact, Jeremy Steig's first one called "Flute Fever" (Columbia). I have never heard anything better than this...either before or after...(and it was recorded well over 40 years ago!)
Not sure what you're doing finger-wise. Perhaps, holding a note, but adding two fingers in the right hand to make an alternate-fingering tremolo. Love what you did at the end (sure relieved the "boredom" pretty quickly!). Nicely done.
Bill, thanks for joining the youtube flute teaching community with this great tutorial. I looked at the fingerings on galwaynetwork. That text page really should include a link to this video in case people find the page there and haven't seen the video. Can I embed this on my site realfluteproject dot com?
I managed to find the page. Really cool exercise - you make it sound easy. The first one starting on A didn't work and I'm thinking it's because I've got a split E mechanism. Thanks for posting this.
HOW can I play like you!? I've been practicing but I want to know how to improvise

This comment has received too many negative votes show
He must be bored or on drugs, what a waste of time. I've played the flute for 30 years, scales and tone is what its all about.
rosygirl22345 3 years ago
rosygirl:
I've practised plenty of scales, long tones, exercises, TG, etc. (as you can surely see!)
However, this exercise proved to be a very useful adjunct to those in terms of focussing and stabalizing my embouchure.
In any event, you are not compelled to try it...though perhaps you would be wise to do so before passing what is an uninformed judgment.
Sincerely,
Bill McBirnie
(P.S. I do NOT do drugs!!!)

tubonian flute:
To answer your question, that is a Robert Bigio crown and stopper.
I have his blackwood/delrin combination as well as his complete zirconium crown/stopper (which is much more expensive).
I am a strong advocate of his crowns and stoppers! (Robert Bigio is easy to find on the web!)
Sincerely,
Bill McBirnie

So, what type of difference(if any) do they make.
tubonianflute 4 years ago
It is a little hard to describe...but, in brief, more responsiveness and more volume...
Bill McB.
