Anyway, if your tfillin and mezzuzahs are OK, I would check out the sofer who wrote them, as sometimes the defect is in him, not the klaf. Also, check if the sale was kosher. Or, if it's easier, just replace them, but make sure the sofer and sale are OK.

In every generation there is someone , perhaps many people, that serve as potential moshiach. If one person made another person shomer shabbos, then that person is his moshiach . As for moshiach of the generation. I believe the Rebbe certainly was the Moshiach of the generation for all Jews. There were certainly contemporary leaders, but compared to the Rebbe, their reach was communal. As for your Rambam retort, please consult Hilchos Melachim Chapter 11, Holocho 4. Only KILLED disqualifies.

Tshuva is not some quantifyable finish line after which Moshiach and HaOlam Habo happens. It's an ongoing and eternal activity to become closer to He who is infinite, even after Moshiach comes. The tshuva that is required is the recognition and practice of the klal gadol of Rebbi Akiva. V'havata l'ereacha k'mocha. (Love your fellow as yourself.) Once enough Jews have the love that concludes that all Jews are trying their best...then King Moshiach will be revealed to all. That means the baseless hatred (sinas chinam) which was the reason for the last exile can only be cured by baseless love (ahavas chinam). And this only requires a strong start in this direction.
